Primary 6 Term 1 2017 Level Letter
Dear Parent/Guardian,
On behalf of our team of experienced Primary 6 level teachers, I wish you ‘Happy New Year’ and warmly
welcome your child back to school. We look forward to working with you and your child this year.
Each term, you will receive a letter which serves to inform and update you on matters pertaining to the
Primary 6 level. We seek your patience in thoroughly reading the contents of the letters.
1) Strategies in Developing 21st Century Learner
At the last MOE’s Workplan Seminar, Minister for Education (Schools) Mr Ng Chee Meng has
recommended 3 key strategies in developing the 21st Century learner:
(a) Joy of Learning
(b) Entrepreneurial Dare
(c) Strengthening the Singapore Spirit
(a) Joy of Learning
Our level theme will be “I Believe I Can and I Will” and our level motto is “Anything is Possible”.
To be successful, the Will and Skill are both important. We often find pupils lacking in self-belief.
which is an important trait to build confidence. We would like the P6 pupils to believe in their own
abilities and potential. They need to have the confidence to keep trying, and not be afraid of failing
as in the process they will learn about the strengths and areas to improve., No one can tell them
otherwise once they set their minds on wanting to succeed.
Apart from having that self-belief, what is more important will be for the pupils to go about realising
what they believe in, i.e. to do what they say. They must have that can-do, will-do spirit. As long as
they pupils persevere, the rewards will come naturally. Once the pupils can taste some form of
success, they will want to seek more knowledge on their own and that will open up endless
opportunities to discover deeper learning for themselves. Ultimately, we want the pupils to
experience the true joy of learning.
For this to happen, we will need you to continually encourage your child to be independent and to
reflect on their thoughts and actions. By taking on total responsibility of their learning, you might
take away their accountability for their own success.

(b) Entrepreneurial Dare
In an article published in The Sunday Times on 8 January 2017, Education Minister (Schools) Mr
Ng Chee Meng encouraged the nurturing of entrepreneurial dare in young Singaporeans. He said
that it is not about all Singaporeans becoming entrepreneurs or businessmen but a mindset.
Entrepreneurial Dare is a mindset. It is an attitude of wanting to do better, find breakthroughs of
wanting to innovate. As Minister Ng added using a Hokkien word, it is to dare to chiong but it is not
a reckless chiong. It is about taking into account the risks involved and doing it anyway.
This key strategy in developing the 21st Century learner is in line with one of our school’s shared
values, “Dare to innovate”. We hope to work with parents to instill in our pupils the resilience to
preserve in times of failures, overcome obstacles and succeed in life. As quoted from Henry Ford,
“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently” we must
encourage pupils to have the grit to move on so that they can become more tenacious and
independent.
(c) Strengthening the Singapore Spirit
With many uncertainties around the world, we must refresh our efforts to promote a strong
Singapore Spirit, so that our pupils can develop a strong sense of belonging to Singapore, a keener
sense of social unity and cohesion, and a desire to contribute beyond themselves to help fellow
Singaporeans succeed. Through our National Education and values inculcation programmes, we
will engage the pupils on how they can be contributing and gracious citizens of Singapore. We
hope you can use teachable moments at home to educate your child too.
2) Parent as a Partner
Bringing up a child is like a voyage, and as a parent, you are the key navigator of your child’s growth.
His development is set primarily at home and in school, and when these two environments are in tune
with each other, your child benefits the most. A number of studies have connected home-school
collaboration to better learning, healthy self-esteem, and more positive attitude and behaviour in life.
Therefore, your involvement is essential in your child’s
education journey. It is important that we work hand-in-
hand to maximise your child’s potential in life.
To build a better working relationship with each other,
let’s observe the following principles:
Trust is the foundation
Remember the child
Understand our shared responsibilities
Seek common ground
Together we work towards common goals
You can help by:
Reinforcing good thinking habits with your child
Setting learning goals with your child
Providing a conducive learning environment at
home for your child
Monitoring and checking your child’s work daily
Affirming and encouraging your child regularly
Working closely with the teachers

for more information on how you can be involved in your child’s education journey.
3) Other Information
(a) Visitors to the School
All visitors to the school are to report to the Security Post to obtain a Visitor’s Pass issued by the
security guard. For the safety and security of our pupils, visitors are to proceed to the General
Office for assistance and not allowed to proceed to any other part of the school building. If you
need to make an appointment to meet the teachers, please take note that it should be after
curriculum hours, except for special cases. Do call the school’s General Office at 6368 7705 during
office hours, 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., from Mondays to Fridays to make an appointment or leave a
message for the teachers concerned to call you back. Otherwise, you can email the teachers via
email. The contact information of the level teachers can be found in Appendix A.
(b) Early Dismissal of Pupils
Should you wish to take your child/ward home before dismissal, please seek permission from the
General Office. Upon arrival, you would need to fill in the required details in the Early Dismissal
Book before leaving the school with your child/ward.
(c) Absence from School
If your child/ward is absent from school, please have him/her submit the medical certificate or letter
of excuse when he/she is well enough to return to school. In the event whereby your child/ward
misses a test or examination, a medical certificate must be submitted to the form teacher. Medical
certificates from Traditional Chinese Medical Clinics will not be accepted as valid reasons for your
child/ward’s absence from tests or examinations. It is also important to note that pupils are to be
in school during term time and not allowed to leave the country earlier so that they will not miss
lessons, activities, tests or examinations carried out during that time. Our level teachers would not
be obliged to provide pupils with the materials, tests or examinations that they have missed without
valid reasons.
(d) Student Diary
Every pupil should have a Student Diary. Our pupils are to record any homework the teachers
have given for the day, so we would like you to refer to it daily and check if your child/ward has
finished the assignments for the day. It is also a book for teachers to communicate with you and
likewise, you can leave messages for your child/ward’s teachers. Various information such as our
school mission and vision, our school rules and the class time-table can be found in the Student
Diary as well.
(e) Homework Policy
Homework refers to any learning activity that pupils are required to complete outside of curriculum
hours. It includes assignments and projects but not revision of school work or studying for tests
and examinations. Our level believe that with an appropriate amount of homework, our pupils’
learning will be reinforced as they will have the opportunity to practice and apply concepts taught.
It will also help to instill in our pupils good study habits besides having them take ownership of their
learning. As a guideline, when our level teachers assign homework to our pupils, we plan for the
assignment to be completed within an average of 45 minutes per subject. However, since
working speed varies from child to child, your child/ward might take more or less time to complete
4
the same set of assignments allocated. We seek your cooperation to ensure that homework is
completed and returned to our teachers on time.
(f) Morning Reading Programme
To strengthen the reading culture of all the pupils and to inspire them to read more, our pupils will
spend some time to read a story book when they reach the hall/parade square every morning. We
would like you to remind your child to bring an age-appropriate story book for their reading pleasure.
(g) Activities and Events for Term 1
A series of activities and events has been planned for the level and the school as reflected in
Appendix B. You can download a copy of the school calendar from our school website as well.
More details of various activities and events will be disseminated to you in due course.
(h) Remedial and Supplementary Lessons
Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays are designated days for remedial and supplementary lessons.
For Mathematics remedial lessons, they are only for a selected group of pupils who need more
support in the subject area. Consent forms will be issued for all after-school lessons to inform the
selected pupils of the date, time and venue, besides seeking your consent. Kindly ensure that your
child/ward attends all remedial/supplementary lessons.
As our level teachers seek to work closely with you, you are strongly encouraged to contact or email
your child’s form teacher if you have any concerns and require clarifications. Do be patient with us and
give us some time to look into your concerns and we will respond to you as quickly as possible.
Kindly acknowledge the receipt of this letter and return the acknowledgement slip to your child’s form
teacher by 18 Jan 2017, Wednesday.
Thank you.
On behalf of the P6 Level,
Yours sincerely,
Mr Samy Lim

CONTINUAL ASSESSMENT 1 FORMAT
Below are some important examination regulations for your attention:
All pupils must be punctual for tests and examinations.
Pupils who are not able to sit for the tests/examinations must produce an official document e.g medical certificate. Absentees without such official documents will not have their marks for their tests/examinations pro-rated. Medical certificates from Traditional Chinese Medical Clinics will not be accepted. We seek your cooperation to exercise social responsibility when you child is unwell. Pupils are advised to stay away from school until they are deemed fit by the medical doctor to return to school. Parents should inform the school of the absence of their child.
If a pupil misbehaves or does not follow the examination regulations during the examination, he/she may be expelled from the examination room/hall and will not be allowed to sit for subsequent papers. His/her examination results may also be forfeited.
All pupils must be honest and truthful during test/examinations. Any pupil caught cheating or involved in any form of cheating during tests/examinations as well as attempts to alter marks and/or answers on tests/examinations will be heavily penalised for that subject and will be subjected to disciplinary actions.
There will not be any makeup examination sessions for pupils who are absent from any of the examinations with the exception of Oral Examinations.
Kindly note that for pupils who are sitting for external examinations/competitions such as ABRSM Music Examinations, there will be no special arrangements made for them. Parents are advised to request for a reschedule of the external event dates where possible should there be a clash with the school’s assessment dates.
