Fifty Days to Pentecost
The adult Sunday School class has been marking the 50 days till Pentecost. This year Pen-
tecost lands on May 24th. (It will also be Confirmation Sunday.)
Our Sunday School class has been noting the similarities between Shavuot (the Jewish
celebration we call Pentecost) and Pentecost (a word taken from the Greek word for fifty.)
Here is what we have noted thus far.
1. Shavuot is the festival of “first fruits.” Pentecost marks the day when 3000 thou-
sand people became Christians, becoming the “first fruits” of the preaching of the
church.
2. Shavuot celebrates the giving of the law. (The Ten Commandments were given at
Sinai, fifty days after the first Passover.) Pentecost marks the giving of the Holy
Spirit who writes the law on our hearts and “reminds us of everything Jesus said.”
3. Shavuot is the birthday of the Jewish nation. The number 40 is a birthing number.
(There are 40 weeks of human gestation. Then comes birth.) There were 40 years
x 10 (400 years) from Abraham till the people came out of Egypt. (See Gen. 15:13)
Pentecost is 40 days + 10 days (fifty days). Then the church was born as the Holy
Spirit was poured out on the church.
You are invited to Sunday School throughout May to hear the rest of the story.
We are excited to have confirmation this coming Pentecost. Come celebrate with the
church the confession of faith of the Confirmands.
We are also excited to celebrate all that is mentioned above and the other 4 major correl-
tions between Shavuot and Pentecost. It is indeed a great celebration day!
Come join the celebration.

50 Days Until Pentecost
Each Sunday we will look at a facet of the power and work of the Holy Spirit. Thus far
we have covered three facets. (see the main article)
Throughout May we will look at four more.

Confirmation Sunday
May 24th
In our baptism liturgy the pastor lays his or her hands on the head of the person being baptized and
speaks these words, “Pour out your Holy Spirit on ______, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in
your presence.”
In the confirmation service… the service where the Confirmands confirm the faith of baptism with
their confession… the pastor lays his or her hands on the head of the Confirmand and says, “Father
in heaven, for Jesus’ sake, stir up in _____ the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm his faith, guide his
life, empower him in his serving, give him patience in suffering and bring him to everlasting life.”
How appropriate it is that these prayers (and more) should take place on Pentecost Sunday, the Sun-
day where we celebrate the Holy Spirit being poured out on the church.
Come Celebrate with our Confirmands and their families this Pentecost. There will be a reception
following the service.

GROW: KNOW & FOLLOW Jesus
ALL NEWCOMERS WELCOME!
DEVOTIONALS are available on the lobby table, including the Daily Texts 2015 devotional, based
upon the Moravian pattern of texts began over 200 years ago by Lutherans.
SUNDAYS:
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL, 9AM
FAMILY SUNDAY SCHOOL continues, following worship on Sunday mornings (11:15 AM).
We are training parents to nurture their children’s relationship with Jesus in the home, practic-
ing FAITH FIVE (a way of doing family devotions for all ages). We will be studying the entire
Bible, and using other family-oriented spiritual growth resources.
WEDNESDAYS (The Wednesday evening activities below will have their last spring gathering
on May 13. Then, there will be a recess for the summer and resume again on September 9):
QUIET WORSHIP at 6:15PM (Recessing for summer beginning May 20 and resume again
on Sept. 9)
Listen and Get to Know Jesus … Reading and Studying the entire Bible over three years:
Timothy Project Bible Study, Wednesdays, 7:00-8:15PM.
Recognize the personal practical voice of Jesus in His word. Learn a simple thorough study
method to fully understand Scripture. Practice praying. Get to know Jesus. No Bible experience
needed. All newcomers welcome. Taught by Pastor Wendy. “All Scripture is God-breathed and
is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of
God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (hence, the name:
“Timothy Project”)
THURSDAYS:
The Apprentice Series, 7PM: Using Scripture, soul training exercises, comfortable conversation,
we are continuing on with the second book in the series: “The Good and Beautiful Life.” This
is an awesome opportunity to deepen your prayer life, hear personally from Jesus in His word
and allow Him to transform your words, thoughts, character, actions and habits into His image,
will and ways.

Some sessions and meals may be free for volunteers. Since these gatherings are local, we encourage
you to attend one or more sessions to become more familiar with our church bodies.
