Big Spatial Data

NATS is the UK's leading provider of air traffic control services. Each year it handles 2.4 million flights and 250 million passengers in UK airspace.

Lorraine Barry BelFOSS presentation 2017 @lorraine__barry

Volume – mobile apps, cars, GPS, UAVs, ships, airplanes, IoT devices

Aircraft transmits via Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast a track every second, 87,000 flights per day in the US, ~ 285 billion points per year

Close to 1 billion tweets per day, many are geolocated – plus facebook, instagram, Google Maps, Uber.......

Geographical Data Science of Flows and FOSS4G

•Import libraries pysal, numpy, csv, pandas •Read matrix of flows •While test failed (range of internal flows per created region) then: •Group areas into regions using Maxp algorithm (PySAL) •Merge created output regions to matrix

•Group the pandas dataframe by region •For list of areas within each region sum flows (rows and columns) •Output flow totals per region •Calculate internal flows •Test solution to check if the regions internal flows are within range
