The News doe not question theright of Mr Adams to resign nor tohold opinions of his own on the wisdomof the removal of the University siteor the disestablishment of the differ-

ent State colleges etc but hi reasonstherefor given to thus Governor arepublic property and are amenable tocriticism-

In the published letter of resigna-tion Mr Adams says

The State of Florida has thou-sand upon thousands of children ofschool age that are annually denied athorough common school education forwant of funds and facilities

This News challenges theof this ttatraent We are sorry

Mr Adams did not take the trouble toinform himself from the data fur-nished by the biennial reports of theState School Superintendent and therecords of the Board of Public Instruc-tion in his own county

Florida has a thoroughly organizedand efficient school system If thereare thousands upon thousands of chil-dren of school age that are annuallydenied a thorough common school

it is because their parents rRise to permit them to attend schooland not for want of funds and facili-ties

From the report of 1002 we findthe whole number of children in Flor-ida of school age to be 166143 Of thisnumber there were 112384 enrolled onthe various school registers in theState That the balance of the 166143were not denied a thorough commonschool education is evidenced by themaintenance of 2470 schools and theemployment of 3558 teachers at a costof 9569735 33

From the fact that the State hasgone to the trouble and expense oftaking the census of children of schoolage is proof that the has provided fortheir education The estimates eachyear and the appropriations made areall based upon the greatest number ofchildren to be taught If thousandsupon thousands of children of schoolage fail or refuse to come forwardand accept the education freely of-

fered them and provided for them bythe State we rail to see wherein theyare denied a thorough common schooleducation for want of funds and fa-

cilitiesThe refusal of parents to

their children to attend school inFlorida hat awakened so much concernamong thinking people that a verystrong sentiment is growing up de-

manding a compulsory attendancelaw
