SUFI

The mystical branch of

Islam.

The whirling dervishes

of Turkey are their most

famous representatives.

Because of its mystical

leanings it fit in well

with Hindu mysticism.

INSPIRATION FROM ARISTOTLE?

Caliph al Mamun, after having a

dream where he was visited by

Aristotle, was inspired to collect the

great works of the classical world and

translate them into Arabic. By 830,

the caliph had set up the “House of

Wisdom” a library and university in

Baghdad. During the Abbasid period,

scholars made advances in economics,

art, literature, and science.
