Berlin Wastewater Treatment

Berlin Stadtreinigung (BSR): Organic Waste Collection

BSR: Germany’s Municipal Waste Management Company

Biogas Plant- Fermentation Plant● Diverts 60K tons of OW● Bi-Product is Bio-Methane

The Energy/Gas produced is used to power:● 150 BSR Waste- collection vehicles ● High Pressure steam fuels the Ruhleben districts

heating network ● The 110K tons of plant “digestate” delivered to

gardening & landscape companies

Carbon Dioxide Emissions

The Urban Carbon Cycle

Sources of CO2 Emissions:Human sources

● Burning of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil)Three major economic sectors:

● Electricity/heat, transportation, industry

Mapping of Berlin’s Water System

● Surface water flows to the south-west corner of the map

● Map includes water works, pumping stations, surface water treatment plants, and where the recharge of groundwater is.

● The Berlin supply region is dominated by Berlin-Warsaw Glacial Valley. The main future for Berlin is the River Spree which forms a 7 km wide valley.

● The Berlin Aquifer is where Berlin citizens get their water from. It is a very sandy aquifer which has positives and negatives.

● There is no economical or ecological reasons to currently worry about the water levels in Berlin.

● Water consumption has been decreasing even though water cost/prices have been increasing.

● The aquifer is at risk with climate change occurring.● Projections show that at a two degree celsius

increase in global temperature will result in a 22-30% decrease in the recharge rate for the aquifer.

Biohazard waste is created in a number of locations:hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, pharmacies, even households. Hospitals

CIEE

BiohazardWaste

Dangerous?

● Some biohazard waste is sterilized on site at hospitals before thrown away in landfills

● There are regulations and laws regarding proper disposal of biohazard materials

● i.e. The World Health Organization recommends destroying hazardous medical waste at 1200 ℃ to destroy germs and infectious diseases

Safe?

● Multiple studies report that the “germ concentration” of wastes collected from hospitals and households is approximately equal

● Based on this, the studies claim that hospital trash can be disposed of in the same methods as household trash

Biological Waste ≠ Hazardous Waste ≠ Biohazard Waste(garden waste, leftover

food, tea bags)(paint, light bulbs,

chemicals, batteries)(medical waste, old medicines, syringes, infectious materials)

Potential CO2 Savings:

SOLAR POWER: 730,000+ tons annually

SOLAR THERMAL: 5,300,000+ tons annually

Potential Solar Power Surfaces: Urban space types and their potentials for roofs and facades suitable for solar technology

Electronic Waste● EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) & German

Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG)● ALBA Specialized Techniques● Hands On Sorting● What’s Really Harmful in E-Waste?● Focus on collection points
