Title of Case Study: Pani Piasa Fundraiser
We have been holding the sports program at our Street
Childrens Rehabilitation Project for quite a while now.
People and clubs have helped out from abroad to supply
the children with playing bibs, footballs, and winter
scarves and hats for those cold game days. As much as all
this has brightened the faces of the kids and made their
games more enjoyable (its not so fun playing football
without balls although these kids would find a way),weve been noticing more and more foot injuries. Playing
barefoot or in flimsy sandals for so long is starting to take
a toll on quite a few toes.
It has also been brought to our attention by the Principal of
Little Daffodils English Boarding School (the school where
we hold our teaching project) that many women in the
surrounding village have either only had a few years of
schooling or none at all so the illiteracy rate amongst
women in the village is extremely high. We made thesuggestion to Principal Lekhnath that we could hold a
womens class in the newly built office building in the
afternoons and without hesitation we were given the
schools complete support. So now that we have an
office/classroom we now need to be able to furnish it. A
large table and 3 bench seats is all we need to be able to get
started on this community project.
With these 2 projects in mind we began to brainstorm ideas for a fundraising event. It didnt take long beforePani Piasa (Nepali for Water Money) was born. The volunteers in country were just as excited as us in the
prospect of competing in such an event.
We picked three teams of three out of a hat
and their first tasks were to pick a team name
and a team colour, make a team mascot and
flag, and advertise the event and its great cause
to their friends and families.

On the day the teams had to set up their boats and get ready at the starting line.
The teams were to head out to Tel Barahi Temple Island and row around the
island once before picking up a Himalayan Encounters staff member and theirteams coloured water that had been poured into three plastic cups per team. They then were to row around
the island again and head into shore all without trying to spill a drop of
their coloured water. Once the teams had arrived back at the finishing
line they were awarded points for their placing in the race, how much
water they still had on board and for their team mascots and flags being
intact and still in their boats by the end of the race. As luck would have it
all three teams finished with the same amount of points so a draw
breaker was to be held to decide our final winner. After a small issue with
a false start the draw breaker was finally under way and all teams
channelled their competitive sides.
Team USA ended up taking top honours and all involved had an amazing day.
Thanks to volunteers May, Harry, Will, Maya, Katie, Sanju, Billie, Marion, and Natalia we have managed to
raise 306 which is only 44 short of our 350 target. We are so close to be able to provide proper sports
shoes for the kids and begin a much needed class in a small village community.
