“Work hard, play with heart.” That’s the phrase that I embraced from the Girls Varsity Soccer team this fall. As a team, we started our season with a high expectation, wanting to ring the bell togeth-er. However, our image collapsed after we lost the first game of the season with McDuffie Academy, kids who look tiny and probably are just 14 years old. We tend to put our heads down after the other team scored their first goal(degrade level of play). No matter how Mr.Varney and Ms.Atwood are yelling on the sideline, telling us to let go, we just never listened. We have tried so many different ways to keep ourselves pumped up for the whole 90 minutes, playing the music while stretching, touching the wolf before the home game, or sing-ing the lyrics “all I do is win, win, win”. The turning point of the season happened when half of the start-ing line was sitting on the bench because of injuries. Our practice ended up with only 12 players who are able to kick some ball on the field. Instead of losing faith in ourselves, we, as a team, stepped up with the help of our coaches. It was painful when we had to do 20 minutes of Indian Sprints or 8 sprints for the lateness, but it kept our whole team together to take ourselves seriously as women ath-letes. All four of our coaches will be there for us during the practice. Maybe they just want to show off their excellent skill level, but they definitely raised our interest in beating them in soccer. Our improvement of working as a team was reflected in the last game with PCD. Being down by two goals, Chacha, who always brings hope to the team, took the ball from Angie and made a goal. One minute after the start of the second half, Chacha dribbled the ball up the field and scored another one. Marlena, in the last five minutes of the game, finished a perfect shot over the PCD keeper’s head, right into the side panel. We may not be competitive as a soccer team, but we are strong as a team. Thanks, girls varsity soccer team. You have brought everyone on the team an awesome experience. And I will always remember that we worked hard, played with heart! Thank you, our four coaches: Mrs. Folan, Ms. Atwood, Mr.Varney, and Ms. Alves. We will remember all the fun we had together on the field.
