Holiday ReflectionOn occasion, people askme, "So, what do you do asa Veterans Service Officer?"And I respond with, "1 helpveterans and their familiesget the benefits for whichthey are eligible."I get quite a fewcalls on anygiven day with questionsand requests, and I do thebest 1can within my scope. But for the past couple ofmonths, I have added anoth-er task to my day: digitizingfiles. I have filing cabinetsfull of records, some dateback to the 1940s.Wefinallyhave the proper technologyto digitally scan these re-cords for safekeeping.Along with the scanning,I use the vast Internet tofind out if the veteran haspassed away yet. Most ofthefiles I am working with arethose of veterans who havepassed away. I learn if theyare in a National VeteransCemetery or a private one.So far, I've noted one WalshCounty Veteran who hasbeen buried in ArlingtonNa-tional Cemetery. His namewas Glen E. Liddle from theLankin area. I thought thatwas a nice bit of history tonote and I hope to learn

more about the veterans ofWalsh County as I go.I also see images of theirheadstones and inscrip-tions. As I write this col-umn, I just looked up aveteran and the inscriptionon his headstone said "AGood Man." Truth be told,it choked me up a little andgot me to thinking. With allthat has happened this yearand the holidays happeningnow, what would friends, family, and colleagues sayabout me? Would I be wor-thy of "AGood Woman" onmy headstone? In this position as a Veter-ans Service Officer, I get todo some good in the world.I listen to the stories ofpast service and I hear thestruggle of today's challeng-es from veterans and theirfamilies. Life is hard. Andsometimes there is nothinga person can do but be pres-ent and listen.I want to wish everyone aMerry Christmas, BlessedYule, and a Happy NewYear.Letus try to be more presentfor our fellowman. It is quitetrue that not all wounds arevisible and you just neverknow howmuch a kind wordcan mean.
