In this project we will introduce

simple machines to a 5th grade

classroom.

We will conduct experiments using

the levers, pulleys, inclined planes-

ramps, wedges, and wheels and

axles.

Students will relate simple

machines to inventions and

compare and contrast the difference

of applied motion.

They will be able to identify how

each machine works and how they

make life easier.

To teach students how

to identify simple

machines.

How the machines are

used in everyday life.

•5th Grade

•PS.6.5.1.

•Classify simple machines

•PS.6.5.2.

•Conduct investigations using

•levers (e.g., toothbrush)

•pulleys

•inclined planes-ramps,

wedges, and screws

•wheels and axles

The project allowed us to

become familiar with lesson

planning and how the

curriculum of simple machines

in the 5th grade are taught

Also it allowed us to use our

creativity and demonstrate the

use of simple machines in

everyday life.

Teamwork

Communication

Collaboration of ideas

Responsibility

Organization

We were able to work as a group and share ideas

and thoughts to combine them for this project

Communication was a key factor in making this

project successful

Internet

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft Word

We were able to show the

community how simple

machines can make life

easier

Researched each part of simple machines

Created lesson plan to expand the

children’s knowledge of simple machines

Angelique created the PowerPoint adding

information, graphics, and effects

Kelley typed up the lesson plan and

objectives

Tambra and Angela took pictures of their

children using simple machines

Simple machines help us make better

use of our muscle power to do work.

They produce force and control the

direction of force, but do not create

energy.

Are used in our everyday life.

Basically are simple tools to make work

easier.

We don’t actually know what the first simple machine was.

Possibly a large stick used by the cavemen to move a large object. (the lever)

A sharp rock used to scrape the skin of an animal. (the wedge)

Logs were used in early building to roll heavy objects around (the wheel and axle), becoming a very important invention.

Inclined plane and rollers were used in building the Great Pyramids in Egypt.

Levers, rollers and pulleys were used to build Stonehenge, England.

Wheel and Axle Activity

•Wheels and axles act like a rolling inclined plane. They make

things move easier by removing friction. Sometimes teeth cut into

the wheel to make gears, a special kind of wheel and axle.

•They occur in lots of places.

•Try and make a list of 10 different places around your house

where you can find a wheel and axle.

This project was very successful in the fact that

we all worked together and made sure each

person did their part on making this project a

success

We all worked in different area and each learned

from one another

A group in the future could take the simple

machines experiment and actually demonstrate it

to a 5th grade classroom to show how the results

were successful

Be used in the upper grades to expand no only

knowledge about simple machines, but compound

machines as well.
