Inspection Device For Department of Energy Hanford Site Underground Tanks

Objectives

Conceptual Design Requirements

• Leakage of the radioactive material

into ground is a major concern due to

environmental impact

• The Columbia River is located five

miles from the Hanford Site

• It is a extremely important to avoid

impacting the ecosystem and also avoid

contaminating the water provided to the

major cities

• The objective is to design and built a

robotic inspection device

• It will travel through the refractory pad

cooling channels to gain further

knowledge of the condition of the tank

and the source of leakage

Motivation

High level radioactive waste has

leaked from underground tanks

located at Department of Energy

Hanford Site in Washington State.

Timeline

• Deployed through riser to annulus floor

• Travel through 1.5 x 1.5-in channel

• Navigate through four 90° turns

• Remote controlled

• Provides video feedback

• Radiation tolerant at 85 Rad/hr

• Withstand high temperatures (170 °F)

• Device must not subject the channel walls to pressures

greater than 200 psi

• Fiber optic line supplies power to motor and camera as

well as means of retrieval in case of malfunction
