From Our Rabbis As we enter 5781, we do so in ways that are not only unusual; they are unprecedented. There have surely been times when Jewish communities were unable to gather in person for High Holy Day worship, whether because of disease, natural disaster, or war. But never before, when circumstances barred physical gathering, were our ancestors able to pivot to virtual assembly. So even as we regret that these High Holy Days will be unlike any we have ever observed before, we are grateful that they will be something new, something special, and something accessible to all. We also believe that, with a little foresight and planning, they can be incredibly meaningful. So a few recommendations toward that end:
• While our broadcast services will remain available for viewing on our website, try — to the extent possible — to tune in for services at the time they are scheduled to broadcast. Doing so will enable you to feel the embrace of your KKBE community, knowing that so many are watching
with you simultaneously. This will also help to space out screen time during these holy days. By separating out Torah services, sermons, and the President’s address, we are intentionally
creating several shorter services and messages and spreading them out over the course of the holidays. While “binge watching” TV shows may be a guilty pleasure, somehow doing the same
with Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur services feels like it might leave something to be desired.
• Consider experiencing services on your TV rather than computer or phone. If your TV/devices support such viewing — whether by connecting with an HDMI cable or casting/mirroring/using AirPlay — we know you will enjoy the bigger view of our gorgeous sanctuary, as well as the
comfort of sinking into your couch to view it. So do a bit of research and experiment with the technology ahead of time.
• However you plan to watch, we’ve seen the recommendation to surround your screen with photos — and we think it’s a great one. Photos of the family members with whom you would ordinarily spend these holidays, loved ones who feature into your most treasured High Holy Day memories, or just those whose loving faces lift your spirits and bring you joy. You might bring in some special ritual objects as well: When we light candles, light your own. When we recite
Kiddush, raise your cup. And, by all means, if you have a shofar and can get out a sound, when you hear the shofar calls, feel free to join in!
• Dress for your special day. If that’s dress clothes for you, go for it. If that’s jeans, or even pajamas — well, no ushers or judgment on our part. But, this year, you might also consider adding a kippah and/or tallit. Whether you typically wear those special ritual items or not, putting them on indicates that we are ready and prepared for prayer, and this year, particularly, they can help us feel like we enter familiar space with a new and sacred intent. Most importantly, when you see the two of us on your screen, and it seems that we are looking at you, speaking with you — know that WE ARE! No, we cannot greet each of you in person in our sanctuary this year, but nonetheless you have been with us every time we have entered that sacred space. You have been in our thoughts as we prayed on behalf of our KKBE family. You have been in our hearts as we tried to glean lessons from our tradition for these challenging times. It is, as always, our honor to be able to enter the New Year with each of you. Wishing you a very happy, healthy, and sweet New Year — from our families to yours, Rabbi Stephanie M. Alexander Rabbi Greg Kanter
From the President Dear Friends,
KKBE’s Board of Trustees, volunteers, and staff join me in wishing each of you a meaningful High Holy Day season and a peaceful New Year as we enter our 272
nd year, 5781. As a congregation, we
are truly blessed with a strong community and people who care deeply.
Although our worship services this year are of a completely different nature, they were carefully planned to provide opportunity for communal worship, private reflection, and joyous song, with beautiful music provided by Koleinu. A tremendous amount of planning and work goes into ensuring everything comes together. Thank you to Rabbis Alexander and Kanter, our staff, and our many volunteers who make it all happen – especially our Ritual Committee and our HHD “Re-imagining” Committee. Both committees did great work in helping us “re-invent” the High Holidays.
In this year especially, we are also very grateful to our High Holy Day Patrons, Mitzvah Members, and to all who make additional contributions throughout the year. Thank you for providing the funds this year that makes it possible to meet the difficult environment we face. Thank you also to the 400+ volunteers who collectively give over 20,000 hours of their time and talents each year to plan and execute our programs and activities – a significant factor in our success as a community.
A very special thank you to all who have participated in our 5-1-1 Campaign and to all of our Society of 1749 members who have made KKBE a part of their estate plans. Your generosity is helping to ensure the financial sustainability of KKBE for generations to come.
It bears repeating. We are blessed with a strong community and people who care deeply — cornerstones for a bright KKBE future!
May this be a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year for each of you and your families.
L’shanah Tovah,
Jeff Weinman
Spotlight on: The Richek Family High Holy Day Fund
The purpose of the fund is to help defray the costs involved in holding HHD services which, each year, costs approximately $20,000.
This fund was created by Jeff and Beth Richek in memory of Jeff’s father, Art Richek (OBM) whose
personal mission each year was to ensure that every person had a meaningful experience at KKBE’s High Holy Day services.
We are grateful for Art’s service and for the generosity of his family.
Donations to this Fund may be made by mailing a check to the Richek Family HHD Fund, KKBE, P.O. Box 418, Montvale, New Jersey 07645 or by going online to
kkbe.org/donate and picking the Richek HHD Fund in the drop down.
Our High Holy Day Music
The music for this year’s High Holy Day Services will be different. As everything will be different. But, as we all have been finding the silver linings and threads in this unwanted tapestry of Covid-19, we will find many in the music.
It was a challenge to create meaningful High Holy Day music without being able to put people in the same room together. But as you’ll see, and hear, we have been so fortunate to be able to draw upon the talents of some wonderful musicians, and technicians.
This year, we will still hear the voices of members of our wonderful choir KOLEINU, and our regular High Holy Day guest musicians. Sometimes, through the magic of technology, we’ll hear them all together. We will also hear and see people that we love, that live far away now, who otherwise wouldn’t be here. We will hear music that is deeply rooted in our tradition, and music that is new to us as well. And finally, we’ll hear from our past, 2002 to be specific. When, thanks to Joe Sistino’s recordings, we hear KOLEINU’s first High Holy Day services. Many of the voices in those recordings have since been silenced. But we remember them, and celebrate them, and are grateful for their strong shoulders, on which we stand. And sing.
Shanah Tovah! Robin Shuler, Music Director

KKBE announces a very special art competition:
Racial Justice and My Jewish Values
The events of recent months have brought the lived experience of systemic racism to the forefront, and in the face of injustice we know Judaism teaches us we must not stand idly by. Open to all Jewish Middle and High School students in Charleston, this competition engages our youth in exploring the mandate of racial justice as an expression of Jewish values. Art is an important way in which teens and tweens respond to their world and reflect on their place in it, and with meaningful prizes to be directed to the charitable organization of their choice, we are also encouraging our stu-dents to explore the inspiring work of tikkun olam (repairing the world) taking place in the community around them. Details and instructions, as well as the submission form, can be found at: https://www.kkbe.org/racial-justice-art-competition
Contest opens for submissions September 15, 2020
Final deadline for submissions Friday, November 20, 2020
Contest winners announced Thursday, December 10, 2020

Dear KKBE congregants, All of us at the Charleston Jewish Family Services (JFS) want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the non-perishable food that you have donated to the Kosher Food Pantry (KFP) throughout the years. Your generosity has enabled JFS to be a lifeline to our seniors, our families and to anyone experiencing food insecurity. JFS is not a stranger to hardship and despair, but nothing can possibly compare to the widespread impact that the pandemic is having in the Jewish community and community at large. We really need your help this year to help mitigate this unprecedented crisis. We ask that you consider making an online donation in lieu of non-perishable food. Your donation impact:
• $18 Provides a bag of food to families with children
• $36 Provides fresh produce for isolated seniors
• $54 Provides High Holiday meals for seniors
• $72 Provides a Hanukah celebration at a senior living facility
• $118 Provides a massive distribution of fresh produce to local food deserts
• $250 Provides Passover Seders for three senior living facilities By going to , the KFP will be able to purchase and distribute food to our most vulnerable community members. Thank you for supporting the pantry through the pandemic and ensuring we can continue to serve others. For more information please contact SaraS@JewishCharleston.org. May your new year be sweet, healthy and meaningful! Sincerely, Sara Chesley, Judy Hinman & Rabbi Aaron Sherman

Coming in October: KKBE's LifeLong Learning!
An Intro to Israel Zoom Course with Master Educator and Tour Guide, Uri Feinberg
Thursdays, October 15, 22 and 29, November 5, 12 and 19, and December 3 and 17, 2020 Every session will be at 1:00 pm: The State of Israel is a vibrant, pulsating, historic, energetic, challenging and challenged heart of the Jewish People. Did we mention layered, complex and beautiful? Join us for a journey through the history of the young State. While we recognize that starting at THE beginning may necessitate a few extra sessions, we will begin our journey with the early days of Zionism. Creating a foundation of knowledge that will take us through the turn of the century, and the British mandate period, we will be better equipped to experience the founding of the State, together. As we traverse that Mt. Sinai-esque moment in 1948, we will continue through the earlier and more recent decades of the State of Israel, engaging with the momentous occasions, the prideful peaks and precarious pitfalls that accompany a living and breathing entity, such as the Jewish State. As we conclude and look to the future, we will have had an opportunity to strengthen what we already know about Israel, add information that wasn’t previously there, and regardless of our opinions about Israel, be able to ask ourselves (and maybe even answer), how does all this relate to us and why do we care?
Our virtual Thursday evening classes: (Every session will be at 7:00 pm) October 15: Toward a Platform for Charleston-Israeli Technological Collaboration. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Jacobo Mintzer. October 22: Are immigrants holding us back or pushing us forward? The evidence behind the economics of migration. Our guest speaker will be Dany Bahar. October 29: Hoarding Toilet Paper: Coveting vs. Contentment. Our guest speaker will be Rabbi Mary Zamore. November 5: In the Pews Before Us: An Overview of Some Notable KKBE Members Through History. Our guest speaker will be Harlan Greene. November 12: American Jewish Joint Distribution. Our guest speaker will be Sharon Hox November 19: Serendipity: From An Inhibitor of Cancer Cell Growth to A Drug Delivery Agent. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Steven Rosenzweig December 3: Wandering Dixie: Dispatches from the Lost Jewish South, by Sue Eisenfeld, who will be the guest speaker. This program is in conjunction with the College of Charleston Jewish Studies, Center for Southern Jewish Culture. December 17: Grandparenting Children In Interfaith Families. The speaker will be our own Rabbi Stephanie Alexander.
We hope you will join us!
