Temple Beth O’r/Beth Torah
Tamuz—Av—Elul 5778 July—August 2018
2
From the Cantor
The month of Elul has arrived, a time that is traditionally associated with introspection and reflection as we prepare for the High Holidays. I expect to do my share of inward reflection in the
days ahead, as I am certain we all will. But I find myself increasingly reflecting outward as well, and in particular on one specific question, and that is: With all that preoccupies us these days, individually and as a society, what do you think will be of most concern to our children and our grandchildren when they are our age? When they read the headlines in the media, when they turn to their social media news feeds, what will be the preoccupation of the day? And when they look back at the opening decades of this millennium what will they deem to have been the truly important events and developments? Will it be about global warming, or the daily manifestations of our too often dysfunctional politics? Will it be about nuclear proliferation, the shifting dynamics of global leadership, or more about fake news and twitter storms? Which will turn out to have had the greatest impact on their everyday lives?
I believe we tend in many ways to be overly focused on the daily gyrations of the here and now and not sufficiently on the longer term trends playing out over time. And so I would like to invite you to share with me your thoughts. What do you think will be the main concerns
of our children and grandchildren? What will the next generation view as our
generation’s greatest accomplishments and biggest failings?
How important will Jewish values and traditions be to the generations that follow?
And how can our reflection during these High Holidays of 5779 move us individually and as a community toward making our society a better place now and into the future?
Send me your thoughts. I would like to share them with our TBOBT family sometime during our holiday services. I wish all my friends at TBOBT a healthy and happy New Year, Cantor Steven Stern
High Holiday Choir -- If you enjoy singing and wish to experience the holidays in an entirely new and inspirational way, join the temple choir. Contact Cantor Stern today for more information.
Beginning October 10, Cantor Stern will be leading a series of sessions at the JCC of Central NJ on
“Mindfulness in Everyday Living.”

From The Co-Presidents
Education Report
From Audrey Silverman’s Installation speech:
This is a great honor, privilege and responsibility. TBOBT is unique. We are surrounded by talented and brilliant Board members, congregants and our wonderful and caring Cantor Stern. We look forward to what we will be able to accomplish in our community. Each of us has unique talents and abilities. We are in this journey together. Toby and I have volunteered our efforts to Temple Beth O’r Beth Torah as our way of thanking G-d for our blessings in our lives. Great things are achieved when everyone does their part and works for a common goal. Let us build a place where G-d can dwell among us.
Special thanks go to Evie Shulman, Rayna Warner, Florence Bernstein, Michael Roth, Karen Hivry, Mariela Hassan and Bonni Clark. They all stepped up to help with shopping, organizing, and planting our flowers. Your work is much appreciated.
Last but not least on a personal note, thank you to my family for your support and encouragement. A special thank you to Howie who, after speaking to our president Lillian Makow, encouraged me to accept the position of co-president. I have only one thing to say: Life is a journey with twists and turns so I suggest you fasten your seatbelt.
Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy 5779! Audrey
We ended the 2017-2018 Hebrew School year on June 3rd. After meeting in class for the first part of the morning, all classes, parents, grandparents and friends met in the sanctuary for our end-of-school year assembly.
The students enjoyed telling about their "Favorite Part of Hebrew School.'' The committee members offered their greetings as well as their summary of a very successful school year. Each student received a Certificate of Achievement along with an ice cream gift card, and our teachers were thanked for their hard work with a gift. We all sang, laughed and shared a lovely end-of-year celebration followed by a brunch of bagels and goodies.
Now onto preparing for 2018-2019 and welcoming Judy Hurok to our Education Committee!!
Thelma, Judy, Elaine and Cantor
Mazel tov to our 2018 Presidents’ Award recipients, Florence Bernstein, Alan Rubin, Fern Cammy and Dennis Berry. They were honored with the Presidents’ Award at the Combined Installation of Officers at Friday evening services, June 22, 2018. Each of them represents the spirit of our many volunteers who are the backbone of our Temple Beth O’r Beth Torah family. We appreciate their initiative and ability to follow through. When they see something that needs to be done, they do it without fanfare and often without being asked. May they always go from strength to strength.
Yasher koach to our TBOBT new Co-Presidents, Audrey Silverman and Toby Prince, to our Executive Vice President, Jonathan Phillips, to our Board of Directors and to the officers of Sisterhood and Men’s Club, all of whom were installed at the Combined Installation of Officers on Friday evening services on June 22, 2018. We have confidence in their abilities and look forward to another great year for Temple Beth O’r Beth Torah.
We will be placing a leaf on our Tree of Life in honor of Florence, Alan, Fern and Dennis. If you would like to show your appreciation for their efforts on behalf of our Temple, please make a contribution toward the cost of the leaf. Bring or mail your check to the Temple, 111 Valley Road, Clark, NJ 07066, 732-381-8403, with "Presidents' Awards' Leaf" on the memo line. Thank you!
Best, Lillian

Sisterhood Message
Sisterhood is busy over the
summer planning some exciting
programs for 2018-19!
Meanwhile, Friday, August
17th is Sisterhood Shabbat. Our
members will conduct services
and we will sponsor a nice
Oneg that night. If you want to
participate in the service, call Fern Cammy. Then the
next day, Saturday, August 18th, we will host a
lovely luncheon. We hope to see many of you that
Shabbat!
I just want to inform you that due to the High
Holidays being so early this year, we will NOT have
a September meeting. Our opening meeting will
occur on Monday, October 15th.
Enjoy the rest of the summer!
Joleen
Special Fund Donations to Special Fund can be made for any occasion for a minimum donation of $5.00. You
will receive 100% donor credit.
To send a beautiful Special Fund card call: Gene Berry (732-388-3453).
Morning Minyan Services
Sundays at 9:00 AM: Temple Beth O’r Beth Torah
If you have any questions, please call Howard Silverman, Fern Cammy or Cantor Stern.
If you are celebrating a special simcha in the family, please let the office know the
details so we can include it in the Beth RepORter bulletin.
The Gift Shop is still open! Most of you are aware of the water damage done to the showcase. Due to the diligence of several Sisterhood members, the majority of our inventory was saved from being damaged. Everything is stored in the locked closet/cabinet. If there is something that you need, please let me know.
It will take some time for the showcase to be repaired. In the meantime, we need some way to display our inventory. If you know of someone who has a glass cabinet that they need to sell/donate, please contact me.
On that note, some members knew I was on a medical leave of absence. I wish to thank Bonni as well as the Sisterhood Board for continuing to keep the Gift Shop open. I am happy to say that I am doing well and I am returning to running the Gift Shop. There are 2 ways you can reach me:
1) Email: [email protected] (This is the best way to communicate with me as I travel and do not always have access to phone service. I always respond quickly).
2) Phone: 732-494-0064 (Leave a message and I will return your call as soon as I am able).
