Defining the Millennial Generation

There is no specific millennial birth year bracket, but it generally refers to people who are born between the 1980’s to early 2000’s.

This is a good age range to describe most of the students we serve in the community colleges.

Who’s Using the Internet?

Don’t Make Generalizations• Just because most are online, we shouldn’t be quick to

assume how they’re using the internet.• ...your student might not have Facebook.• ...or Twitter.• Even on the same social network, might use the service

in different ways.• It’s important that we use multiple strategies to

maximize our impact!

Facebook• The world’s largest social networking website. • Most people have a Facebook account. • If you only use one social network, make sure it’s

Facebook.• Gives you data!

o Track who is interacting with your page.o See how many people view your posts.o Demographic data about your followers.

Instagram• One of the most popular photo sharing networks.• Must have a smartphone or tablet to use this service.

o Appleo Android

• Can be linked with Facebook, so even non-users can see your posts.

● Download app● Open Instagram

● Select the photo you want to post.

● You can use a filter (special effect).

● Add a caption.

● Using #hashtags.● Tagging people.● Sharing on other

networks.

● Share on your Facebook page by signing in.

● If you have multiple Facebook pages, you may need to change your Instagram settings so that it connects with the correct one.

● Interacting with students.

● Posting to highlight student achievement.

Google Voice• A free phone service from Google.• Several features:

o Free text messaging!o Message several students at once. o Create a free, local phone number.o Free long distance phone calls (US & Canada).o Transcribed voicemail.

○ Text and voicemail will be sent directly to that email● Setting your google voice number to link to work phone

○ Use this method to deal long distance phone calls

students through text.• It’s FREE!• Works like email, but students receive it instantly on

their phone.

Remind 101● FREE to send mass text messages!● “A safe way for teachers to text message students and

stay in touch with parents!” ● Flexible for students ● Very easy to use interface

3. Must have a phone number with text services to use.

4. Activate the group by sending a text to yourself.
