KENNESAW STATE UNIVERSITY, STUDENT RECREATION

ACTIVITIES CENTER

The expansion and renovation of the KSU Student Recreation and Activities Center (SRAC) was issued as Bridging Documents RFP by Hughes Group Architects. Cooper Carry with Richards, Wittschiebe, Hand Architects are part of the Hardin Construction Company team selected to execute the Design Build project. The 176, 092 square foot facility is to accommodate the University’s explosive enrollment growth to 20,000 students. The new facility and renovation was to be completed as a Phased construc-tion project, sequenced to keep the existing facility operational throughout the 18 month construction cycle.

The facility expansion abuts the existing recreation facility, creating a 300 foot long two (2) story fitness atrium & circula-tion spine that sits astride an existing main campus pedestrian pathway that energizes the facility, becoming the new recreational and social hub of the campus. The fitness atrium is glazed on three sides creating a dynamic day lit space during the day, and a transparent campus beacon at night.

The existing facility gym, locker rooms, multipurpose rooms were renovated, the Health & Wellness Center services & facilities expanded. The new facility has expanded free weight, cardio, fitness, and group exercise areas and new locker rooms. The new four (4) court gym has a jogging track looping around the upper level of the gym, fitness area, and two story climbing/bouldering wall. There is an 8 lane indoor lap pool as well as a outdoor lei-sure pool. There is a bike shop with convenient equipment check-out area for outward bound equipment. The exterior recreation area includes sand volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts.
