English I-Pre-AP• Purpose: to offer an

enriched, accelerated, and rigorous curriculum in order to prepare students for college-level AP courses and increase their cultural literacy.

• Sponsored by the College Board, which administers AP exams as well as the PSAT and the SAT.

How Pre-AP differs from level English:

• taught at a much faster pace• separate curriculum• students are routinely assessed for

critical thinking skills• focuses on tools and strategies to

enable students to engage in “active, high-level learning,” and “develop skills, habits of mind, and concepts they need to succeed in college.”

Successful Pre-AP/AP students should be:

• highly focused• task-oriented• able to prioritize• willing commit the

necessary time to read analytically, think critically, and work independently both during and outside of class

Curriculum• Grammar and Vocabulary• Composition• Individual and group

presentations • Research skills• Broad literature program including

– Fiction (A Tale of Two Cities, Ender’s Game)

– Nonfiction (Isaac’s Storm, Argument)

– Drama (Romeo and Juliet, A Raisin in the Sun)

– Poetry (The Odyssey, Selected poems)

– Visual texts• AP-style strategies

Course Outline• Unit 1: Pre-AP English Essentials• Unit 2: The Short Story and Analytical

Writing• Unit 3: The Epic and the Analytical

Essay• Unit 4: Classic Poetry and Drama• Unit 5: The Pre-20th Century Novel

and Style Analysis• Unit 6: Argument and Research• Unit 7: Modern Poetry and Drama

Assessment• Tests – typically multiple choice AND

major written components in the same test

• Essays – one or more major paper(s) per quarter; timed writings periodically

• Formative Assessments – will become more quiz-heavy as the year progresses

• AP-Style Work – aligned with the junior and senior AP tests (scaled down for a freshman level of understanding)
