Hammond Tonewheel Generator output levels measured according to the method used on the old Hammond graph called ''APPROXIMATE OUTPUT VOLTAGEREADINGS OF ORGAN GENERATOR FREQUENCIES 1 TO 91.''

This output curve graphchart seems to be from the 1930’s but l believe that it is a very important and useful graph chart . ln order to measure the Tonewheel Generator ( TG )output levels with the method shown on this output curve graph , the AC Volts RMS voltage meter is connected to the GG outputs of the preamplifier. The chart indicates thatthe Hammond Tone Cabinet is connected during the test. I suspect that if a Leslie Kit is connected, the low impedance of the Leslie Kit may affect the output readings sobefore taking my measurements it may be a good idea to remove the Leslie Kit The chart states that ''the Tone Control on the preamplifier should be as set at the factory '.

 Although the chart gives no indication, l have been told by a leading and very knowledgeable Hammond technician / expert that the normal factory set position of the ToneControl during the factory Quality Assurance tests was in the half way position The chart states that the expression pedal should be at full volume position and that the chorus/ vibrato controls should be in the ''off'' position. The instructions do not say anything about the position of the gain trimmer capacitor in the expression swell box , but mostorgans that l have seen including my 1963 C3 had the gain trimmer capacitor set to one and a half turns fro the zero position , so when l recalibrated and measured the TG ofmy 1963 C3 using this graph chart as a guide , l set the gain trimmer capacitor back to the one and a half position and the AO28 Tone Control to the half way position so that lcould get back to as close to the original factory settings as possible for the best accuracy.

Either the 16'ft , the 5 1/3' ft or the 1'ft drawbar is drawbar is selected and the appropriate keyboard key is pressed and the AC RMS voltage coming out of the GG outputs isnoted down. The ''Chart 1 '' is for the earlier Model B organs with serial numbers between 4000 and 5075, and also for the Concert Model E organs with serial numbers

below 8000. The Chart 1 for the early organs uses the 16' ft drawbar and the keyboard keys 1 to 48 [ C 1 to B 4 ] for the TG notes 1 to 48 and the 1' ft drawbar and thekeyboard keys 1 to 43 [ C 1 to F# 4 ] for the TG notes 49 to 91. lt appears that the Chart 1 is for the very early organs such as the Model BC that had the ''bass all the waydown '' to the TG note 1 on the bottom octave of the keyboard of the 16 'ft drawbar. The Chart 2 is for the later Model B organs with the serial numbers above 5075 and forthe later Concert Model E organs with the serial numbers above 8000.

The Chart 2 has noticeably weaker bass output levels below the TG note 25 , as well as an overall weaker output level compared to the Chart 1 . The Chart 2 for the laterModel B and E organs uses the 16' ft drawbar and the keyboard keys 1 to 36 [ C 1 to B 3 ] for the TG notes 13 to 36 . The chart 2 then uses the 5 1/3 ' ft drawbar and thekeyboard keys 18 to 29 [ F 2 to E 2 ] for the TG notes 37 to 48. after this, the Chart 2 uses the 1' ft drawbar and the keyboard keys 1 to 43 [ C1 to F# 4 ] for the TG notes 49to 91. The reason for this particular choice of drawbars and keys is because the manual tapering resistance wire values for all of these keys follow a consistent resistancevalue pattern so therefore you can get a realistic comparison between the output levels of each TG note without the noticeable output level variations that affect the TG noteson the other drawbar and keyboard positions because of the various different resistance values of the manual tapering resistance wires. As can be seen on the ''llya'

Keycircuit Tapering Resistances Of One Manual Of 1946 CV '' chart in this TG & Tapering data spreadsheet, on the 16 'ft drawbar the resistance wire values for the keyboardnotes 1 to 7 [ C1 to F# 1 ] are 100 ohms [ 120 ohms for the note 8 and 140 ohms for the note 9 ] , for the keyboard notes 10 to 16 [ A1 to F 2 ] the resistance wire values are50 ohms. .For the 16' ft drawbar keyboard notes 17 to 36 [ F# 2 to B 3 ] as well as the 5 1 /3 'ft drawbar keyboard notes 18 to 29 [ F2 to E 2 ] and the 1' ft drawbar keyboardnotes 1 to 43 [ C1 to F# 4 ] the resistance wire values are 24 ohms.

FEBRUARY 2005 TG RECALIBATION OF MY 1963 C3Both the Chart 1 and the Chart 2 output curves are for the 1930’s / early 1940’s era organs with the earlier preamplifier designs , so this means that the output voltagecurves were probably not intended to be used with the later organs with the AO28 preamplifier such as the B3 / C3 / RT3 / A100 / D152 etc, because the earlier preamplifierdesigns would have had a different frequency response and gain levels than the AO28 preamplifier. However because the output curve graph chart is a Hammond factorychart and also because the output curves are the tonal balance of the final output signals coming from the GG outputs of the preamplifier , l decided that it does not reallymatter that the output curves were not necessarily intended for the organs with the AO28 preamplifiers, and l was curious to hear how my 1963 C3 would sound like if the TGwas recalibrated so that the output levels coming from the GG outputs of the AO28 were similar to that shown on the old Hammond output curve graph , so l decided to

recalibrate the TG of my 1963 C3 with this method. Because l want to be able to get a nice warm fat sound out of my 1963 C3 , l decided to recalibrate the TG to give thestronger bass and the stronger overall output levels of the Chart 1 output curve intended for the earlier Model B and E organs. I used the drawbar and pressed keyscombinations shown on the Chart 2 because of the manual tapering resistance wiring scheme in my 1963 C3 , but I recalibrated the TG to give out the stronger outputvoltages shown on the Chart 1.

In 2004 l modified my 1963 C3 so that l can choose between the normal stock bass foldback or the ‘’bass all the way down’’ setting for the bottom octave of the keyboardswith the 16 ft drawbar position , and l also added switching that can convert the complex waveforms of the bass TG notes 1 to 12 into approximate sine waveforms bygrounding out each of the TG notes 1 to 12 with 470 mf capacitors . For the TG recalibration l set the selector switch to produce the ‘’bass all the way down’’ setting and lswitched the 470 mf grounding capacitors in circuit so that l got the purified sine wave-like bass TG notes 1 to 12 on the bottom octave of the keyboards with the 16 ft drawbarposition so that my C3 was now like the very early Hammond models such as the B and the BC and l could easily recalibrate the bass TG notes 1 to 12 through the 16 ftdrawbar position of the bottom octave of the keyboards .

Hammond Tonewheel Generator output levels measured with a voltage meter connected to the GG outputs of the preamplifierwhilst each TG note is connected to a preset panel busbar , as instructed on the Hammond B3 / C3 technical service manual.

The Model G service manual states that the Tone Control should be set to full brightness for this test. l assume that this also applies tothe B3 / C3 RT3 / A100 etc. To measure the output levels of my recapped and recalibrated 1963 C3 l turned the AO28 Tone Control tofull brightness and the gain trimmer capacitor screw to the factory set position of one and a half turns anticlockwise from zero. On thechurch 1960 RT3, l turned the AO28 Tone Control to full brightness but l turned the gain trimmer capacitor screw inside the expressionswell box until the TG note 25 ( 10.5 mVpp when measured directly from the TG of the RT3 ) gave a reading of 11.5 volts RMS throughthe GG outputs when it was connected to the busbar # 5 ( sixth from the bottom ). The B3 service manual instructs to use the busbar #4 ( fifth from the bottom ) but this may possibly be an error because the displayed service manual voltages are not achievable with thefourth busbar even when the gain trimmer capacitor is set to its maximum gain position of approximately 11 turns anticlockwise from thezero position .On the stock 1960 RT3 with the original factory set TG calibration levels, setting the gain trimmer capacitor screw toapproximately 3 turns anticlockwise from the zero position gave a reading of 11.5 volts RMS when the TG note 25 was connected to thefifth busbar ( sixth from the bottom ) so l decided to measure the RT3 with the fifth busbar instead of the fourth. Both the C3 and the RT3have the original stock AO28 preamplifier. l have wired two pole / three position switches in parallel with all of the new TG capacitors forthe TG notes 49 - 91 of my 1963 C3 . ln switch position 1, the new TG capacitors are correctly in circuit and this approximates the waymy C3 will have sounded when it was new and the wax capacitors were working in their correct specification. ln switch position 2, thereare smaller value capacitors added in parallel to the correct mfd value TG capacitors and these added capacitors increase the mfd valueby approximately 20 % so that this can simulate the way my C3 may have sounded when the old wax capacitors had aged moderatelyand the mfd value had drifted up by 20 % . ln switch position 3, there are smaller value capacitors added in parallel to the correct mfd

value TG capacitors and these added capacitors increase the mfd value by approximately 50 % so that this can simulate the way my C3sounded when the old wax capacitors had aged after 40 years and their mfd value had increased by approximately 50 % Notice theoutput levels of the TG notes 49 - 91 of my 1963 C3 that l did by connecting the voltmeter to the GG outputs and each TG note wasconnected to the fifth ( sixth from the bottom ) preset panel busbar. Notice how the output level readings of the TG notes 49 - 91 actuallyincreased when l set the TG capacitor switches to positions 2 and 3 for the aged TG capacitors simulations.You would expect that whenthe capacitors are switched to recreate the effect of ageing, the output levels of the 49 - 91 signals would decrease. In the GG +drawbars and pressed keys measurement method, you do indeed see a lowered output reading for the TG notes 49 - 91 when thecapacitors are switched to recreate the effect of ageing.However, with the GG + preset panel busbar measurement method, the TG note is connected directly to the preset panel busbar .Theextremely low impedance of the busbars ( less than one ohm ) causes the different TG notes to react differently when they are connectedto the busbar. This is why there is a very large difference in the output readings of the directly coupled TG notes 1 to 43 and the

transformer coupled TG notes 44 to 91.On the later era ( 1965 - 75 ) organs the TG notes 37 -48 had the capacitor / resistor hum filtersand on these organs there is an abrupt difference in the output levels between the TG notes 36 and 37.This can be seen in Bernard's1973 C3. Another interesting observation is the fact that the output readings of some of the TG notes 49 - 91 on my 1963 C3 actuallyincrease when the capacitor switch is set to recreate the aged capacitors effect. This rais es serious questions about the reliability andaccuracy of the measurement method using the TG notes directly connected to the preset panel busbar .l believe that the GG + drawbarsand pressed keys measurement method is a more realistic and accurate method to measure the TG output levels through the GGoutputs , and l believe that the best way to measure the TG outputs is when the TG itself is measured directly in millivolts peak to peak .With the direct TG measurement the condition of the preamplifier and the valves is ir relevant
