Martin Youth LEADERship Class learned the consequences of breaking the law at PUBLIC SAFETY DAY. Students met professionals from the 19th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, including the Honorable Chief Judge Elizabeth Metzger, Martin County Supervising Attorney Assistant Public Defender John Hetherington and Martin County Supervising Attorney Assistant State Attorney Nina Denton. They presented an overview of the court system in the Treasure Coast area. Students were also given solid advice in making smart choices during their student years, and how to prepare for the many varied
careers in the legal arena.
The students’ morning in court was followed by an on-site visit to the training area for Martin County Fire and Rescue. Students trained side by side with current recruits, experiencing the rigorous physical demands these brave men and women must achieve to become firefighters in Martin County. The final visit of the day was a behind the scenes tour from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Correctional Facility. Students enjoyed a K-9 presentation from Deputies while learning how German Shepherds are trained to assist officers in tasks vital to law enforcement. Sheriff William Snyder spoke to the students as future leaders of their communities, encouraging them to never give up, never set goals too low, and build upon
their successes one layer at a time.
After lunch, students were given a S.W.A.T. demo from Lt. Reuben Romero and his team. The team displayed and explained the use of various S.W.A.T. equipment, including why studying math can be an important topic should one wish to learn how to use explosives. Students were then given a tour of the Bearcat used by the MCSO. The day concluded with a brief tour of the jail. The students learned how inmates are brought to and processed at the MCSO jail and saw firsthand about the complete lack of rights and privacy one should expect if in jail. They also viewed the “restraining chair” and learned how ably it can restrain even the strongest adults for their own safety. Many thanks go to program chair Robert Bruton and his commit-
tee: Trisha Kukuvka and Brad Beckett, who organized the day.

From the Board From the Board -- George Stokus, PresidentGeorge Stokus, President
Your board was charged this year with creating more opportunities for networking
and education and you have responded by supporting our Lunch and Learn pro-
grams, showing up in force at the United Way of Martin County’s White Doves
program, and becoming more involved in Adult LEADERship as well as Youth
LEADERship.
Our January lunch and learn was a great success. Mike Merker, Martin County
Chief Information Officer, presented information and tips on Working with a Multi-
generational Workforce at The Stuart Boat House to a sold-out crowd.
This month we have a great opportunity to be among the very first to see the Vintage Race Car Exhib-
it at The Elliott Museum – the exhibit opens with a ticketed cocktail party on February 7th and we
will be there on the 8th. All the details are in this edition of LEADERlines.
We are combining March and April into one event – After Hours at Geoffrey Smith Galleries in Port
Salerno on April 4th – mark your calendars now – more information to follow. Geoffrey was our first
Lunch and Learn presenter for the fiscal year. Just for fun, look him up on Wikipedia (Geoffrey C.
Smith, Sculptor).
Each year we award the Nancy Sailer Youth LEADERship Scholarship for $8,000 to a high school
senior who has been through the Youth LEADERship Program. We have held a variety of events to
raise funds for that scholarship. This year your board decided to spare you a fundraiser and simply
ask you to support the scholarship fund. More information to follow in the next month.
Our Alumni represent the brightest and best of Martin County, and we look forward to seeing each
and every one of you at an event before the end of our fiscal year in June 2019.

children and families. Someone with “a light about her” who
made people laugh and always made time to help others.
Rosemeyer, a Jupiter resident, died Monday January 21 in a
car wreck east of Belle Glade. She was 44 and left a husband
and two children. If you wish to make a donation go online to
www.GoFundMe.com and search for “Abbie Rosemeyer Memo-

If you and a guest have attended a fundraising event for our scholarship
program in the past, chances are it cost you between $150 and $250 to
attend. We will be launching our first ever NON-EVENT in the next
month to raise the money we need to make sure that one of our Future
Leaders has a great start with a generous scholarship, and it will cost
you less than attending an event! One of your class members will be
reaching out to you in the next month – please stay tuned and be gener-
ous when asked!
