Leroy Petry

Leroy Petry joined the Army in 1999. Petry attended One Station Unit Training — a seamless succession of Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) — the Basic Airborne Course, and the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program all at Fort Benning, Ga. Afterwards he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He has served as a grenadier, squad automatic rifleman, fire team leader, squad leader, operations sergeant and a weapons squad leader. Petry has deployed eight times in support of overseas contingency operations with two tours to Iraq and six tours to Afghanistan. During one of his eight deployments while serving in the US Army, Mr. Petry lost his hand when he picked up and threw a grenade to save his fellow Rangers from being wounded or killed during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2008. He received the Medal of Honor for his bravery and heroism. Petry reenlisted in 2010 to finish his career with the Army. He cur-rently serves as a liaison officer for the United States Special Operations Command Care Coalition-Northwest Region, and provides oversight to wounded warriors, ill and injured service members and their families.
