GATHERING
M: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
Introduction to the hymn.
C: (sung) All praise to God who reigns above, The God of all creation,
The God of wonders, pow’r, and love, The God of our salvation!
With healing balm my soul he fills, The God who ev’ry sorrow stills—
To God all praise and glory! (CW 236:1)
M: You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,
C: for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
(Galatians 3:26,27)
M: There is one body and one Spirit—
C: just as you were called to one hope when you were called—
M: one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
C: one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
(Ephesians 4:4-6)
C: (sung) I cried to him in time of need: Lord God, oh, hear my calling!
For death he gave me life indeed And kept my feet from falling.
For this my thanks shall endless be; Oh, thank him, thank our God with me—
To God all praise and glory! (236:2)
M: You are the salt of the earth;
C: You are the light of the world.
M: Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds
C: and praise your Father in heaven.
(Matthew 5:13-16)
ORDER OF SERVICE FOR
THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
4
M: Yet so often we have failed to let our lights shine before others. For this and all our sins, let
us approach God with a true heart, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to
forgive us.
C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.
For faithless worrying and selfish pride,
For sins of habit and sins of choice,
For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever.
O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.
C: (sung) The Lord will not forsake his flock, His chosen generation;
He is their refuge and their rock, Their peace and their salvation.
As with a mother’s tender hand He leads his own, his chosen band—
To God all praise and glory! (236:3)
M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive
in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called
servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the
Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
C: (sung) All who confess Christ’s holy name, To God give praise and glory!
All who the Father’s pow’r proclaim, To God give praise and glory!
All idols under foot be trod; The Lord is God! The Lord is God!
To God all praise and glory!
Then come before his presence now And banish fear and sadness;
To your Redeemer pay your vow And sing with joy and gladness.
Though great distress my soul befell, The Lord my God did all things well—
To God all praise and glory! (236:4-5)
THE WORD
M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
5
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: Let us pray.
Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and
our ears to hear. Help us to believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and do the
things that are pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
FIRST LESSON Joshua 24:14-24
Looking at God’s great acts of grace and power, as did the Israelites under Joshua, we cannot help
but join in vowing our obedience to God. We will put away the gods of self and sin, and through the
Spirit we will yield our hearts and join with Joshua in his life of salt and light.
14
“Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors
worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15
But if serving
the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in
whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
17 It was
the LORD our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of
slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey
and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18
And the LORD drove out before us all the
nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is
our God.”
19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; he is a jealous
God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. 20
If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign
gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to
you.”
21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the LORD.”
22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve
the LORD.”
“Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied.
6
23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your
hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey him.”
PSALM OF THE DAY (Falls) Psalm 111
The refrains will be sung by the school children at 8:00 and 10:30.
Great are the works of the LORD;*
they are pondered by all who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic are his deeds,*
and his righteousness endures forever.
He has caused his wonders to be remembered;*
the LORD is gracious and compassionate. Refrain
The works of his hands are faithful and just;*
all his precepts are trustworthy.
He provided redemption for his people;*
he ordained his covenant forever.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;*
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
7
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain
PSALM OF THE DAY (9:15) O Give the Lord | Psalm 111 (printed on p. 16)
SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 2:9-12
The call of God made us part of a new people in order that we might declare his praises. Called from
spiritual darkness into the wonderful light of the Gospel, we let that light shine on everyone around
us. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that
you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful
light. 10
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not
received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war
against your soul. 12
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of
doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
ANTHEM (sung in place of the Verse of the Day at 8:00, 10:30 and 9:15)
You are the salt of the earth, you are the light of the world,
Not to be hidden, but to be seen by all the world.
You are a lamp in the night, shining your light for all to see,
Not to be hidden, but to be seen by all the world.
VERSE OF THE DAY (6:45, 5:00) John 8:12
M: Alleluia. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life”. Alleluia.
8
Please stand
M: The Gospel according to Matthew chapter 5.
C: Glory be to you, O Lord.
GOSPEL Matthew 5:13-20
In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is not revealing how we are saved, but how we will live after
being saved. We will be salt that acts as a preservative keeping this world from rotting, and lights
which reflect the message of God’s grace in Jesus.
13
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It
is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Neither do people
light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone
in the house. 16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good
deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish
them but to fulfill them. 18
For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest
letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is
accomplished. 19
Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and
teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices
and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20
For I tell you that
unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will
certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
9
M: This is the Gospel of our Lord.
C: Praise be to you, O Christ!
HYMN OF THE DAY Thy Strong Word | 280
SERMON 1 Peter 2:9-12
Christians Are God’s Rock Stars
1. Made stars through God’s mercy
2. Shown to be stars through Christian living
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
10
who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THANK OFFERING
Moved by God’s love in Christ, we offer him our first and best gifts, purely out of thanks to him.
Please take a moment to sign the Friendship Register.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
M: Jesus Christ, Lord of Glory, you delight in making yourself known to us and others. Bring us
to recognize and rejoice in your majesty and your ministry. In love you chose to exercise
your greatest strength to serve us in our greatest need. You revealed the brightness of your
glory through humble deeds of love.
You called ordinary men to do extraordinary things as your disciples and apostles. You also
call us confidently to follow you, diligently to learn from you, and lovingly to imitate you.
Equip and empower us to serve you and our neighbor faithfully. Use us as your witnesses to
bring many throughout the world to the light of your gospel.
You revealed your glory through your mighty signs and wonders. Assure us that you still
rule all things in the universe and use them to serve our eternal good. In wise compassion
you often exercise your power to help and heal people with physical and emotional needs.
Give us courage and compassion to relieve the distress of the hurting, to pray for all
according to their needs, and to be content and cheerful when in your wisdom you ask us
to endure hardship.
Special prayers and intercessions may follow.
M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.
Silent prayer.
M: Preserve your truth among us, and by that truth preserve us until you appear in dazzling
splendor to bring us to the glory of heaven. Let our anticipation of the heavenly kingdom
ennoble our thinking and speaking, enrich our conduct, and increase our joy in all aspects
of earthly life. Hear us, Light of the Gentiles and Glory of Israel. Amen.
11
THE SACRAMENT
M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
M: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them up unto the Lord.
M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O
Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who came
as the Light of the world so that the world may have light and life through him.
Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and
join their glorious song:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus | 78
12
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
M: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your
Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed
us from sin, death, and the devil’s power.
By his incarnation, he became one with us.
By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will.
By his innocent death, he overcame hell.
By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven.
Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant
and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, and preserve us in the
true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting.
C: Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on
earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those
who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom,
the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given
thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my ✙ body,
which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you;
this is my ✙ blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of
sins. Do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: Amen.
