PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

The MA in Politics is a one-year, full-time programme that enables students to

choose the areas they wish to specialise in within the field of politics. This is a

truly flexible programme that enables students to tailor the degree to their

own interests, skills and future career plans. The only core modules that the

MA in Politics students will be required to complete will be the two research

methods modules that are common to all our postgraduate taught degrees. In

addition, they can choose any two electives in the first semester and any

three in the second.

CAREERS

This unique and genuinely flexible postgraduate degree prepares students for

a variety of professions. Since this degree offers a generic qualification in

politics, it does not restrict the range of careers available to students after

graduation. At the same time, given the wide-ranging choice of modules,

students can pursue several interests and acquire expertise in a number of

fields in political science. It is also an excellent springboard for further

research, potentially towards a doctoral degree or public policy research. In

the past, our graduates have pursued careers in business, public administra-

tion, journalism and civil society organisations.

DISSERTATION

Following the two taught semesters in Autumn and Spring, during the summer students must complete an individual research project in the form of a written dissertation for submission

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Each taught postgraduate programme has particular entry requirements therefore

applicants should consult the individual programme entries for further details.

Applicants for a Master’s programme must normally have a first or second class

Level 8 honours degree (NFQ or other Internationally recognised equivalent) in a

relevant or appropriate subject, or equivalent prior learning that is recognised by

the University as meeting this requirement. Applicants must also satisfy the English

Language Requirements of the University. The University reserves the right to

shortlist and interview applicants as deemed necessary.

CORE MODULES

Research Methods These modules are designed to familiarise students with alternative approaches to the conduct of re-search in social sciences. By providing a series of introductory lectures on alternative research methodologies and approaches, the main aim is to give students a comprehensive understanding of key issues surrounding the logic of explanation and research design, in order to facilitate and support more advanced study in their own area of research specialism and dissertation study. A key element of the modules will be problem-based learning and case work. Students will be encouraged to pursue their own disciplinary strengths to create their own case studies that will be used to identify and develop more general disciplinary research methods and strategies.
