Mater, over 100 Years of exceptional care
On 4 January 1906, the Sisters of Mercy opened a 20-bed private hospital in a former residential home in
Brisbane’s North Quay. This was the first Mater Private Hospital and the start of a tradition of care and
compassion for the sick and the needy that would eventually lead to the establishment of seven hospitals for
the Brisbane community, under the guidance of the Sisters of Mercy.
The story of Mater’s development from a small private hospital, to a world-class group of seven hospitals and
a research institute, is an exceptional one. It’s a story of hardship, adversity, triumphs and compassion,
characterised at all times by a commitment to care.
It’s not just Mater’s story. During its first 100 years, Mater has been part of the story of almost every person who
has lived in Brisbane and countless more from all over Queensland and Northern NSW.

Workplace Health and Safety Responsibilities (WHS)
Most workers in Australia are protected by nationally uniform work health and safety laws. This includes
employees, contractors, sub-contractors, outworkers, apprentices and trainees, work experience students,
volunteers and employers who perform work.
Workplace Health and Safety is a shared responsibility at the Mater and we aim to provide the highest level
of health and safety protection from hazards arising from work, so far as reasonably practicable. As a visitor
to the campus your obligation is to
REPORT incidents and hazards to help prevent injuries and notify your supervisor immediately
KNOW and COMPLY with policy and procedures , abstain from reckless behaviours or unsafe practise
which may put yourself or others at risk
PARTICPATE in a culture that values the wellbeing of everyone in the workplace
How can you report incidents?
Advise your supervisor immediately.
Your supervisor will report the incident in ERIC, Mater’s Online Incident Reporting System. ERIC can be
accessed through the Novell Window on a Mater computer.

Wellbeing functions. The Unit's functions include:

Standard precautions provide the basis for the prevention and control of infection in healthcare settings and
are to be applied to all patients and clients regardless of their known or presumed infectious status. They
include:
effective hand hygiene practices
the use of personal protective equipment including gloves, gowns, plastic aprons, masks/face shields and eye protection
the safe use and disposal of sharps
routine environmental cleaning
reprocessing of reusable medical equipment and instruments
respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette
aseptic non-touch technique
waste management
appropriate handling of linen
immunisation
In circumstances where extra measures are required to prevent transmission, additional precautions may be
used. (i.e. contact, droplet or airborne precautions) this is called Transmission Based Precautions.
Transmission based precautions
Transmission based precautions (previously known as additional precautions) are measures used in addition
to standard precautions when barriers are required to prevent transmission of specific infectious diseases.
They require isolation of the infectious source to prevent transmission of the infectious agent to susceptible
people in the health care setting.
A means for alerting people entering an isolation area (i.e. signage) of the need to wear appropriate
personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to prevent disease transmission.
For More information please access the Infection Control and Hand Hygiene Procedures (PR-CLN-900027 and
PR-CLN-900019) in the Mater Document Centre once on placement.

Clinical handover – SHARED
Clinical handover is the process under which transfer of information, accountability and responsibility for
patient or group of patients occurs. The mnemonic ‘SHARED’ is used as a framework for a structured
approach to all clinical handovers. This assists clinicians to participate in comprehensive, appropriate and
safe communication irrespective of the clinical setting and ensure that safe and continuous care will be
provided to all patients.
Below is the mnemonic reference. Please refer to procedure PR-CLN-900147 once on placement.
