Media Commons Spring 2015 Report
Media Commons Spring 2015 Semester Report
Prepared: May 2015
Service Overview
Media Commons is supported by seven staff, four responsible for UP and working from Pollock Building, Sparks Building, the Knowledge Commons, and Colleges of Ag and EMS, two responsible for all Commonwealth campuses, and one overall manager. Additional support comes from approximately 80hrs/wk of lab consultant support. Campus consultants travel regularly in addition to supporting the campuses remotely. Media Commons facilities exist in the Pollock Building, Pattee Library, Sparks Building, College of Ag, and College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at UP, and at every Commonwealth campuses (20 campuses, not including Special Mission campuses). This report includes two sections, each with separate information on UP and Campus operations.
Executive Summary
Spring 2015 continued the effort towards scaling and assessing Media Commons’ online support opportunities. New facilities and emerging challenges made for an interesting and successful semester. A brief write up specifically covering our focused support and resources as well as an infographic can be found on our website at: http://mediacommons.psu.edu/2015/06/spring2015semesterreport/
Media Commons Spring 2015 Report
Mobile Media Goes Global Since starting out as a Pilot four years ago, the Mobile Media Project at Media Commons has continued to shape the way consultants shape video projects when working with faculty across a wide array of disciplines. One area where focusing on mobile tools has really paid off is in study abroad and other global programs offerings. Since Spring of 2011, mobile devices from have traveled to Costa Rica, Ireland, Jamaica, Tanzania and Thailand, the last of which being where 4 iPad minis have landed with 9 students from New Kensington, Beaver and Berks, all part of Marketing 445. These devices are helping students not only document their journeys but also providing evidence of engaged scholarship in a global community. Online Modules The online interactive iMovie video modules were used in a preliminary study involving 50 ENGL 15 classes. 25 sections attended inperson iMovie workshops while the other 25 sections used the modules as their primary source of iMovie instruction. A pre and post test were implemented to compare the effectiveness of the methods. The study will be repeated in the fall pending IRB approval. This is an exciting new step for the Media Commons in scaling and assessing our online support strategies. Collaborative Video
The Collaborative Video Pilot featured two online courses during the Spring 2015 semester, including one taught through World Campus. As the goal of the entire pilot is to prepare Media Commons for an increasingly hybrid and online future, these projects provided invaluable feedback as well as opportunities to practice the teaching and support models that will be necessary for similar classes in coming semesters. Moving forward, Media Commons plans to offer Summer and Fall 2015 pilots on a limited basis and will then evaluate where the University stands on a streaming solution before pursuing further Collaborative Video Pilot milestones. Facilities and Staffing At the end of Spring 2015 the Media Commons located in room 11 of the Sparks building at University Park has been closed. Resources have been reallocated to the new partnerbased Media Commons in the PAMS Library housed in Davey Lab. This is a strategic location for Media Commons, located in central campus across from the HUB. The PAMS Library Media Commons had a soft opening in April during which the One Button Studio had significant use. Markus Furer joined the Media Commons team as the new University Park Coordinator in April 1st. Markus’s office is in the Pattee Library Knowledge Commons location and will work closely with University Park’s faculty. Lauren Rishe, the Media Commons consultant specifically serving the College of Ag and College of EMS, obtained a fulltime position within Financial Services at the end of March. Efforts are underway to replace her position. Challenges At Commonwealth campuses, Media Commons consultants rely heavily on the support of key players in a campus community in order to bring multimediabased learning opportunities to students in the widest variety of courses. Where stakeholders like Directors of Academic Affairs, instructional designers, campus librarians and other academic support staff are not able to create environments that foster taking risks and trying new methods of engaging with course materials, faculty are far less likely to select a video or audio assignment for their students. In response to this, consultants will be continuing to push for tailored programming, strategic meetings and innovative collaborations to ensure that all students have access to the same media resources and learning opportunities at the University. University Park’s short staffing challenges persisted through the spring semester, but as the semester closed a new team member (Markus Furer) had joined the group and new positions were to be hired during the summer.

Commonwealth Campus Semester Report
Spring 2015
The charts above illustrate course projects, campus events and related campus visits to each location for the Spring 2015 semester as well as comparing each to the past two Spring terms. Media Commons campus consultants traveled on 64 occasions in support of 42 projects and 3 events across the state in the Spring 2015 semester. These figures represent another high ratio of campus visits to number of projects (1.52:1) continuing the trend started in Fall 2014 of more engaged class interactions due to consultant proximity. At the same time, this semester saw many weatherrelated cancellations, necessitating reliance upon MC Overview and iMovie training modules in many classes, extending consultant reach without additional travel commitment.

Notable Assignments
Behrend: CMLIT 490 Students in Joshua Shaw’s CMLIT 490 course were asked to analyze trends in video games in order to expose the social, political and economic issues within that are on display within and in the culture around these properties. Students produced 35 minute documentaries in various styles with support from Media Commons and use of MC training modules for iMovie. 1 MC overview & storyboarding workshop, 1 day of phonebased storyboard critique, 1 rough draft critique and 1 final screening
Shenango: MKTG 475 New instructor Michael Wachter asked students to produce viral marketing campaigns for his upper level course, specifically focusing on different aspects of a Penn Statelocal business venture, Cravings. Students were asked to produce media examples that illustrated specific components of their social media advertising plans 1 MC overview/storyboarding workshop, 1 storyboard review/iMovie training session
Berks: ENGL 202C Professor Tara Beecham teaches three sections of ENGL 202C at Penn State Berks, in a hybrid format. She asked her students to prepare an audio project where they explained a process from beginning to end. They were required to write a script, record narration, and incorporate sound and music where appropriate. The topics could range from fixing a computer issue, to how to do a load of laundry. The projects needed to be detailed and easy to follow. 1 MC overview/GarageBand Workshop Session
Berks: INArt 005 Students in INArt 005 were challenged to create a video project, geared toward a young audience, in which they would be reading a children’s storybook. They needed to be animated in their reading, and have many visual and audio aids to compliment the story. Many of the students incorporated using the One Button Studio to complete this project. 1 MC overview/iMovie Workshop, 1 Critique session
Media Commons Spring 2015 Report
Website Overview
The Media Commons website saw continued growth in traffic during the Spring 2015 semester, racking up 85,310 page views from 38,387 visitors, 83% and 77% increases year over year for the same term, respectively. While much of the growth does come from robust traffic inside the Commonwealth, these 15,756 sessions represent just 34% of all activity (down 5% from Spring 2014). The remaining 66% originates primarily from other US states (36%) and English speaking countries including the UK, Canada and Australia (12%). This trend of nonUniversity growth points to the website becoming an increasingly global media learning resource. Across the site, the Free Media Library continued to be the top item of content, with 10,967 visitors stopping by from around the web. Following behind were the Sound Effects tutorial (4,245), the Handbrake tutorial (3,847) and the Green Screen tutorial (3,661). The universal usefulness of this top content vs. Penn Statespecific items reinforces the transition of the Media Commons site into a resource with much wider appeal. mediacommons.psu.edu Usage Statistics (January 5 May 15) ● 38,387 unique visitors viewed content across 45,796 visits ● 85,310 page views ● 82.5% of visits were from new visitors ● 1.86 pages/visit ● 1:27 per visit spent interacting with the site ● Acquisition: 32,251 views via Google, 8,405 direct, 1,313 via clc.its.psu.edu, 648 via onebutton.psu.edu ● Locations: 32,218 visits from the U.S., 2,378 visits from the U.K., 1,783 visits from Canada ● Top content: Free Media Library, Sound Effects tutorial, Handbrake tutorial, Green Screen tutorial ● New content: Updated iMovie tutorial (585 visits), Faculty Stories (135 visits)
