Smartphones have changed the way we inhabit the world. It is now possible to be present in two

places, but at what cost?

Two parts insincerity and one part selfish motive is a vicious cocktail.

I said a quick prayer, not just for me, for all the pretenders.

Caught staring. Oh well.

Sipped

from the cup

of illusion

dark liquids

it was all in there

moments

rising to the surface

rolling around the sweet angles

the back of her tongue

time

thoughts

fun conversations

wishing they meant something

went somewhere

I once met a thin man in a health food store in upstate New York who, upon hearing I did theatre,

said, “Me too. I eat Camus on stage. You should come see it.” I didn't. L'Etranger is my favorite

book, but I've never cared how it tastes.

He caught my arm and twisted it behind me, kicking me to the other side of the alley.

Man perched on the edge of a curb like a platform diver

Inches from a murky grave

A rumble and growl

like God yelling at the sun

tongue tastes like battery acid

a conqueror

fresh from the heat of battle.

So many shapes and faces drift across the sky

I cannot name them all.

Nostalgia comes from the Greek words “nostos” to return home

and “algos” which means pain.
