MIXING ANIMAL TESTING AND COSMETICS
Is it justifiably okay for animals to be tested in the making of cosmetic products?

RESEARCH QUESTION
“The ugly truth about testing beauty products on animals is that it causes them unimaginable pain and suffering. If every cosmetic tested on rabbits or mice had a photo on the packaging showing these animals with weeping swollen eyes and inflamed skin, I believe everyone would go for the cruelty-free option instead”
(Hamilton 29).
PAUL MCCARTNEY BAND MEMBER FROM “THE BEATLES” SAYS…….
• Excludes all types of birds and rats (Federal Register 2004).
• This law wasn’t expected to be retroactive (2004).
• “This action will not have a significant economic impact on a substantial number
of small entities” (2004).• Governs things like humane handling, care,
treatment, and research facilities (2004).
ANIMAL WELFARE ACT
Animal testing is poorly regulated. “What Are the Animal Testing Pros and Cons”
says that little legislation has been passed in the US regarding this issue. It also talks about how after animal testing there are cases where the animals are left to starve
(Environmental Laws). Image courtesy of Howesjwe/http://www.dreamstime.com/free-photos
ROOM FOR CRUELTY
Scientist Tipu Aziz argues, “Beautifying oneself has been going on since we were
cavemen. If it’s proven to reduce suffering through animals tests, it's not wrong to use
them” (Jha, A., & Lewis, P. 2006)."I don't think we can justify using animals
for cosmetics research," says another scientist named Clive Page. He goes on to say that he does not think it is necessary
and that it deserves to be banned because there are alternative methods (2006).
ANIMAL TESTING A NECESSITY?
“The UK Government had announced its intention to conclude animal testing one year before the voluntary ban
took place” (Freeman 1999). Animal testing is banned in Europe because of the
“appalling” suffering that animals have already been shown to have experienced (Brennan 20).
Brazilian state of Sao Paulo has banned all animal testing for cosmetics and perfume products (Brazil to Abolish Animal
Testing 2014).If Europe can do it why can’t we?

Animal testing for cosmetic purposes is unjustifable!
Perhaps the most interesting finding (survey) is that most people seemed to randomly guess products that were used in animal testing.Similar results from women who do and do not
wear make up.The majority of women regardless of their beliefs
of medical use thought it was unethical to use animal testing for cosmetic purposes.
More studies should be done with a better informed public to see if the results would
change.
