 About the Home

■  The National Grid Model Energy Home is a key

initiative of the National Grid-Buffalo Niagara Medical

Campus Energy Innovation Partnership.

■  The home is located at 941-945 Washington St, walking

distance from the NFTA-Metro Allen St/Medical

campus stop and within the Buffalo Niagara Medical

Campus.

■  The two-storey, brick home is over 6000 square feet,

providing significant space for the variety of home

energy innovations, displays and interactive stations

planned for the project, as well as providing full

disabled access.

■  The home was originally constructed in 1915 as two

separate homes and later joined and renovated for

use as medical offices. Using a period home will help

illustrate the ability to use the latest technologies in a

region with a variety of older and historic housing.

Transforming the Home■  The Partnership will renovate and retrofit the home,

transforming it into the National Grid Model Energy

Home to demonstrate modern, state-of-the-art

energy usage, efficiency and management innovations.

■  This will involve showcasing and encouraging the

adoption of a range of home energy innovations,

including energy efficiency, home energy management,

renewable energy and grid modernization technologies.

Engaging the Community

■ Serving as a community education center, the Nationa

Grid Model Energy Home will engage the surrounding

neighborhoods and the wider Buffalo-Niagara region

in home energy, with engaging experiences for both

adults and youth, who are the future of the region.

 Valuable information will be provided on residential

programs provided by National Grid, state and federal

agencies, and community organizations.

■ In addition to the National Grid Model Energy Home’s

heritage, it is strongly linked to Buffalo’s rich energy

history: not only was Buffalo the first US city to install

streetlights, but Washington Street was one of the

three streets where these first streetlights were installed.

■  This historic connection to Buffalo’s history of energy

innovation allows the National Grid Model Energy

Home to not just inform residents, but also provide

them with a sense of pride, ownership and steward-

ship in the origins and legacy of the first electricity grid

established in the area, and how it has contributed to

modern-day society.

■ Building on the historic connections, the education

center will also include rotating exhibits, celebrating

the history of energy innovation in the Buffalo-Niagara

region.
