Ilkal Sarees, a locally hand woven 6 yard unstitched garment is losing its popularity fast

Local women who would be interested in the hand woven sarees are rare as they are expensive and difficult to maintain

Banana fibres are the main commonly available fibre which are used at TKT for their various produce

Can the saree and the banana fibre be used together to come up with a new possibility?

Started by TKT in 1997, Bhoomi Society for Working Women is a a group of 15 Self Help Groups (SHGs) that provides means of financial independence for it’s members. Each SHG works in different creative areas, such as weaving, crocheting, banana fiber rope making, tailoring etc. Today Bhoomi Society has grown to a strength of around 200 women, who are all skilled in a particular creative field and who regularly work (directly and indirectly) with designers. As news of Bhoomi Society’s success has spread, more women have shown an interest and TKT has plans to expand to around 500 women in the near future.

Bhoomi Society for Working Women

Varalaxmi, who is associated with Bhoomi Society since its inception is the main coordinator for the society today.

Today TKT has proposed The Bhoomi Society to be independent which will make its members to take more responsibility and be stake holders of their own enterprise.
