Did you know?

Did you know that sour candies erode toothenamel and speed up decay?

It’s True! Sour candies contain citric acidwhich erodes tooth enamel much faster thanany other food. Most sour candies are moreacidic than vinegar, and are in contact withteeth for prolonged periods as the candy iseaten. Rinsing after sour candy helps.

Going Keto is all the rage, but the diet is laden with conflicting ideas, disastrous oversimplification and misinformation. In Keto 101 we'll dive into this

trend to understand the way, why and how, to suc-ceed with ketogenic eating. Cheryl O'Dell's presen-tations are extremely informative and she will be available to answer your nutrition questions.

There will be keto cookbooks from the Coastline Library system available for check out on this day. This event is free and open to everyone.

BANDON — A new exhibition of photographs exploring Bandon during the Eisenhower Era, 1955–1961, is now on display at the Bandon Professional Center through Nov. 25, 2020.

The exhibition features over 40 historic photo-graphs sourced from the Bandon Western World newspaper film negatives. Many of these images are being publicly shown for the first time.

The photographs depict scenes of everyday Bandon life but reflect broad themes of the United States of the 1950s. There was postwar prosperity, a blossoming material culture and local economic struggles. New thinking challenged traditions of art, design, music and dance. Women contributed in the workforce amidst evolving perceptions of domestic

values. The Cold War loomed and schools imple-mented more rigorous instruction in science and technology. But throughout we see the generous and resilient nature of Bandon citizens, celebrating and enjoying life, giving charitably, and engaging in civic improvement.

This exhibition is possible thanks to the board, staff, and volunteers of the Bandon Historical Society, with special thanks to Mary Schamehorn and the Bandon Western World newspaper.

The Bandon Professional Center is located at 1010 First Street SE in Bandon. The exhibition is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

BANDON — Continuing through January, “Oracles and Icons” paintings by Angela Passalacqua; and a vintage tin collection from Dawn Vonderlin will be on display at the Bandon Library Art Gallery.

Human beings have been telling and retelling stories since the beginning of time, stories that func-tion to untangle mysteries and describe the truths of our world. Out of these stories grew symbolic fig-ures so pervasive as to become iconic and univer-sally understood, allowing cultures to communicate across time. Passalacqua draws upon such iconogra-phy, creating paintings whose stories we recognize, even as viewers puzzle out their specifics. Painting

with oils on wood, Passalacqua creates surfaces that are textured, fresco-like.

Certainly no world has so thoroughly under-stood and harnessed the power of storytelling through iconography as the world of advertising. Through the lens of nostalgia, and with admiration for the imagination and talent of the artists of yester-day, we can appreciate this collection of vintage tins, shared by Vonderlin. Look beyond the surfaces to find the hidden treasures here. The charm of this col-lection lies in such cleverness, as well as the call-back to that impossibly perfect place where we never lived: the past.

COOS BAY — With 2019 at an end, the envi-ronmental nonprofit SOLVE reported that they con-nected nearly 32,000 volunteers to over 1,160 envi-ronmental projects in a year-end update for their 50th year of operation.

In the course of these projects, SOLVE reported volunteers collected 282,012 pounds of litter and marine debris, recycled 169,386 cigarettes, and cleared over 21 acres of invasive species.

"The informal SOLVE motto is just to 'get things done,'" said Kris Carico, SOLVE CEO. "We are a small but mighty team, always thinking of the most efficient route to have the biggest impact to improve Oregon's environment."

Many Oregonians know SOLVE from their coast-wide beach cleanups and SOLVE IT Earth Day

events. However, SOLVE supports volunteers throughout the year and promotes volunteer opportu-nities every weekend on their website.

SOLVE was founded by Governor Tom McCall in 1969 and is Oregon's go-to environmental non-profit. SOLVE focuses on marine debris prevention, litter cleanup, removal of invasive species, and plant-ing native trees. They engage hundreds of thousands of volunteers to collect litter and remove invasive plants every year. Since their start 50 years ago, it's estimated they have cleared over a million pounds of litter and cleared hundreds of acres of coast land.

More information on SOLVE or upcoming projects can be found by visiting solveoregon.org or emailing info@solveoregon.org.

‘Amnesty weeks’ at Bandon Library

BANDON -- Have you ever wanted to learn country line dances? Or maybe you know a few and have been looking for a place to dance? The floor at Lloyd’s is “amazing,” according to teacher Pat Mitchell.

Lessons are free, easy and fun. They are held at

7 p.m. every Wednesday, then off and on as request-ed until 9 p.m. The music is mostly country on Wednesday nights and the DJ does take requests.

“Put on your dancing shoes and meet us at Lloyd’s, 219 Second St. in Old Town, Bandon,” said Mitchell.
