Namaste,

Yoga strengthens our willpower and helps us nd ways to adapt to the present. This International Day of Yoga, millions of Yoga enthusiasts demonstrated it, by coming together to celebrate IDY 2020 online. Across the world, virtual Yoga classes and workshops were held to emphasis on the need to practice Yoga while maintaining social distancing. Now, as more people are focussed on building immunity and resilience, they are resorting to Yoga to empower self to cope up with the challenges faced due to the ongoing pandemic.

Due to the prevailing restrictions in view of the COVID 19 situation, TYI commemorated IDY 2020 by hosting online and virtual sessions including various live demonstrations, interactive meetings and webinars to encourage everyone.

To support our Police Force, who have been dedicatedly working long hours in this hour of crisis, TYI has joined hands with Krishna Prakash IPS, Spl IGP (Admin), Maharashtra State to commence the Suryasana Movement. Supported by actors like Akshay Kumar, Sonu Sood, Farhan Akhtar, Suneil Shetty along with many other eminent dignitaries from various elds, the event is aimed at promoting health and wellness through Yoga by practicing Surya Namaskar and raising funds for our frontline corona warriors who are getting stretched thin in the line of service, protecting people like you and me. The concept is simple and everyone from child and teenager to adult and senior citizen can participate by pledging to do a dedicated number of Surya Namaskars between now and 14th August. Register yourself today on our website and join the Suyasana Movement!

While we enjoy the rains from home, we can munch some delicious bajra cookies and learn more about sattvik food from the celebrity chef Ranveer Brar. And as Maa Hansaji tells us how to accept the new normal, in this month's issue of Yogasattva, Dr Jayadeva also enlightens us about how we can travel from the external to internal world with the authentic practice of Yoga. These words of wisdom will help us more in this day and age of lockdowns and restricted movements.

Stay home, stay safe and join our Suryasana Movement.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

Smt. Hansaji J. YogendraDirector, The Yoga Institute.

ven though COVID-19 is a pandemic and it has created

Efear in everybody’s minds, if you think about it, it was indeed a blessing in disguise. A much-required change

was pending for a long time. Sometimes our human race needs something solid and concrete to shake us up but also change our faulty behaviours.

Let’s face it, life is not going to be the same again, at least, for a few months or years. We will have to live with ‘the new normal.’ Yoga strongly recommends that we must be exible, not only with our bodies but also with our minds. The sooner we accept and adapt to the new normal life, the better will be our mental health and life.

• Better and improved hygiene: One of the major changes that we are going to see in this new life is the acceptance of better hygiene. These lockdown days have taught people the importance of maintaining self-hygiene and when in society. At least now people will think twice before spitting on the road or covering their mouths while coughing or sneezing. What Yoga has been talking about for years is now going to be ‘the new normal’. Niyama, the second limb of Ashtanga Yoga, talks about Saucha (Cleanliness) and its importance in our life. It gives us a variety of techniques to keep ourselves clean from outside as well as inside. Jal Neti is one such Yogic technique that keeps us clean from the inside and strengthens our respiratory system.

• Good health and immunity: Along with this, the pandemic has also taught us the importance of good health and immunity. Everyone has turned towards the age-old science and technique of Yoga to build up their immunity and respiratory system. Asana and pranayama have become the new normal for people, and even if the reason was fear, at least Yoga has now become a habit for many. Yoga directly works on lowering the stress hormones that compromise the immune system. It also helps to condition the respiratory system and stimulates the lymphatic system, thereby throwing all the toxins out of the body and bringing oxygenated blood to all the organs.

• Atmanirbhar: We have also learnt to become Atmanirbhar in its true sense, and this is something that will be the new normal as well. We have learnt to function without our househelp and maids. Right from dusting to mopping, to washing the clothes and doing the dishes, we have learnt to do everything on our own. When a carpenter or plumber wasn’t available, we learned to do some DIY hacks as well. This has not only made us self-sufcient and self-reliant but has also made us realise the importance of our househelp. We have newfound respect for them and how they used to do everything for us.

• New doors to a Digital World: The digital world has opened up lots of new possibilities for us. The internet has literally made our lives so much easier. At just a tap of a few ngers, a new recipe is right on our screens. Video calls and classes would be the new normal, as just by sitting at home, we are now able to connect to a greater number of people. What earlier seemed an ofine-only job can now easily be replaced by online methods. Companies would now consider the idea

of working from home, freelancing, and working from remote places more seriously than ever. What at rst seemed to be a limitation or a barrier, has now opened new possibilities for everyone. People are now exploring various options over the internet to make their lives easier and more convenient.

• Smart Money: Saving money and actually being a conscious and responsible consumer is also going to be a new normal. Pre-COVID, we were so addicted to shopping that we had to visit the mall every other weekend. We now know that we don’t really need to spend our money unnecessarily on things that we don’t really need. Being careful and mindful with our spending habits is going to be the new normal.

• Minimalism: We have now realised how little we really need to survive. Essentials are actually the only things that we truly require. Roti, Kapda, aur Makan is really our privilege. Minimalism and conscious buying is denitely going to be the new normal.

• Home-cooked meals: Home-cooked and Sattvik food is also going to be the new normal. We all can see the difference in our health and wellbeing by eating at home, right? Research has shown that people who cook at home tend to have a healthier life and are able to get rid of all their lifestyle-related diseases like obesity, diabetes and improve their overall immunity. Many people will accept cooking at home as the new normal, post-COVID. Along with this, family bonding and connection is also something that would be a new normal. The joy of dividing the kitchen responsibilities and sharing it together as a family has denitely brought all of us together. Lockdown has truly brought out the hidden masterchef in each one of us.

• Gratitude: People have now realised the value of life, the value of being able to go out and meet their friends. Yoga, in general, makes us very humble and grateful in our approach towards life. Being grateful for life is going to be the new normal, which should have been normal otherwise as well.

Changes are the only constant in life. And post-COVID life will also be something that would require us to mould ourselves into the new patterns and embrace them with open arms, while still maintaining the social distance.

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

Pooja Shah

COVID must be one of the most searched words in recent times. Social media sites, magazines and newspapers are replete with reections of people the world over on how the virus has made them all hit the pause button in their life and slow down a bit. Recently, a successful lm actor ended his own life. This painful incident affected many people in many ways.

It took me back to a Satsang I had attended. While sharing their own journey, one of the teachers mentioned, “upgrade yourself, dabble in spirituality when the going is good.” He was suggesting we should learn to swim before life throws us in a deep whirlpool. When one is in the midst of a storm is not the time when one can start learning how to swim.

The times we live in (with or without COVID) are indeed very different from what our parents and forefathers lived in. Life was comparatively slow, people were less judgemental, less money-minded, people were not chasing success the way this Internet-savvy generation does and there was no social media to magnify every failure of ours.

In such times, when everything is fast, when people buy their rst house and car when they start their rst job, when everything is available on instalments or at the click of a button, having a spiritual anchor in life has become all the more important.

Generally, one tends to be enamoured by the rich and famous and look up to successful and rich people be it in lms, cricket or the business world as role models. One tends to think that money is equal to happiness. But these same people tend to lose their bearings when struck by some big untoward incident in their lives, such as the pandemic or the lockdown. Who one looks up to, what is the philosophy by which one lives one’s life and what the ideals are that one follows has never been more important than now. Let us look out for the right people who can show us how to live a life of greater good, which helps us to create value in every sphere of our lives.

Being locked up in our homes with or without our family members, staying in India or a foreign land amidst an overarching sense of fear and uncertainty that is pervading the entire world is like life taking an exam. Life is testing us whether one is actually able to walk the talk of faith, surrender, karma yoga, importance of routine and everything and more that The

Yoga Institute teaches.

Amongst the various things that one can implement while in lockdown are:

1. Importance of having a routine: As many of us are now working from home, slowly but gradually we tend to become indisciplined, having no xed time to sleep and no time to wake up in the morning. At times, some of us may even miss our breakfast or taking a bath every day as we don’t have to go to the ofce, to school or college. Slowly, lethargy can creep in. It is very important to follow the four pillars of ahar, vihar, achar and vichar and have a routine even while working from home.

2. Karma Yoga: Doing our duty to the best of our abilities in whatever role we may be playing, be it a student, a teacher, a homemaker, a retired person or someone having a regular 9- 5 job. Focusing on our duty with dedication and commitment will help us keep our minds occupied and also keep the wheels of society in motion - if we all get paralysed by fear and don’t work, how would society function?

3. Vairagya Bhava: Do your duty and surrender the results to the higher reality. Every time everything cannot be under the control of human beings. We should take all the necessary precautions to avoid contracting the virus and then surrender to the higher reality. Constant fear and worry, tracking the spread of the virus online and forwarding scary and depressing news will only add to our fear in these uncertain times.

It is a time to reect on what is the anchor in our life - is it money, is it success or is it Yoga or any other spiritual pursuit? Have a right philosophy that can guide you through the various ups and downs of life.

et’s start with a few simple questions: When cleaning

Ltakes place in our homes, do we leave it incomplete and let the dirt accumulate? Do we start decorating our house

simultaneously or do we complete the cleaning process rst? Does cleaning require energy and effort? What happens if we have not cleaned our house for days, months - and I hope not - years?

Now, let’s apply this analogy to our body and mind in three different ways:

What happens when we consume something just before sleeping?

What happens when we get interrupted or fragmented sleep?

What happens when we sleep continuously but not more than 5 hours?

When we sleep, a cleaning takes place but what happens when we take a sedative or any other pill, chocolates or any external aid either to sleep or out of habit before hitting the bed to start our sleep hygiene? Our liver, which needs restoration for 7 hours and starts working on breaking down (metabolising), halts this repair work. Our digestive system, which needs rest and the help of its best friends - liver and pancreas - starts its breaking down system when it is time for repair and recuperation.

Secondly, when we sleep for a duration of 7 to 8 hours but when the sleep is fragmented, our body starts its work of cleaning but can’t complete it. We don’t reach the depth of our sleep when we need the light, deep and dream state. When we keep waking up again and again, we can’t complete all the phases of our sleep cycle and become vulnerable to diseases and infections, which has an effect on our immunity. Research has shown that one night of bad sleep can disturb our regulation of blood sugar by 40 percent.

At this stage, we are sleeping continuously but not more than 5 hours - again, the restoration of our organs is not complete. In our brain, there are certain chemicals that get washed up every time we sleep. If they accumulate over a long period of time, it

leads to an overload of those chemicals, which are a trigger for Alzheimer’s disease. Along with that, every night in the brain, there are certain cells that shrink and prepare our brain for the processing of new information when we wake up. When we don’t get a good night’s sleep, we feel drowsy, groggy and exhausted, physically and mentally.

Sleep is complete and reaches its full potential when it is of a good quality and quantity and uninterrupted. The duration and depth of our sleep is as important as it being continuous. So let’s make our sleep hygiene as important as our morning routine. Imagine the plumbing system in our house not working properly and the chaos it creates; why not treat this home - our body - with the respect and dignity it deserves. Let’s make sleep our priority and give it the utmost importance it deserves.

Incorporate yoga into your life, and what you do on the mat will bring wonders when you bring it off the mat. For example, the Yogic technique of reection before sleeping gives directions and increases objectivity. Yoni Mudra for introspection decreases our overload of thoughts, while doing just 15 minutes of Shavasana before going to sleep is the best way of telling our mind and body that it is time to slow down. In addition, writing or expressing gratitude for everything that we are blessed with gives us abundance. When we start observing our breath, we can go forward with different pranayama like equal breathing, Anulom Vilom, intercostal and diaphragmatic breathing.

How we prepare ourselves for our day, let’s do the same for our sleep hygiene. A good night’s sleep will provide us with a good day.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH YOGA

Omprakash Tiwari came to Mumbai in search of an opportunity to make money but found Yoga instead. The path from his village in Benares to the gates of The Yoga Institute was not a straight one though. A farmer with a wife and one child at the time, Omprakash came to Mumbai alone in 1999, a Standard 10th graduate, ready to take up any work to send money home to provide a better life for his family.

First, he tried his luck in Goa and stayed there for a while but was not able to earn enough, so he soon came to Mumbai, working as an auto rickshaw driver for the rst ve to six months. He had to work at night because he did not have his own license but there were many ghts in the wee hours of the day and so he left the job.

Next, he worked in a garment factory as a helper, earning a mere Rs. 3,500 a month for 12-hour shifts. He had lots of responsibilities, which caused him stress, the biggest factor not being able to earn enough for his family. A period of disease with constipation, gastric problems and fever followed. But his luck turned when a manager at the factory who frequently visited The Yoga Institute invited Omprakash to come along. He did just that and soon enrolled for the 7-Day Health Camp, taking a holiday for a week and having the course fee - Rs. 600 - cut from his salary.

Being a friendly and jovial person, Omprakash soon made friends at the Institute, fellow 7-Day campers who went on to

pursue a teachers training course and persuaded Omprakash to do the same. Still working at the garment factory, Omprakash joined the 1 Year TTC from 1:30 - 4 pm each day, going to work in the mornings and evenings but having his salary cut for the hours missed each day for the class. It was tough to do both but Omprakash thoroughly enjoyed all his classes and the new way of thinking.

This went on for ve to six months when Mrs. Desai noticed Omprakash and asked him if he wanted to work on a cardiac project. This is when Omprakash’s life changed as the project was a paid one and he could soon give up his job at the garment factory to help out at The Yoga Institute full time.

“This was God’s gift,” remembers Omprakash. “After this, everything fell into place - mentally, I was settled, nancially also, and everything else improved - the relations with my family and other relations, my behaviour. All my problems were solved. It was a miracle.”

Soon, Omprakash nished his 1 Year TTC and was able to get his wife and daughter to Mumbai as well. Today, he lives with them and his two sons in Vasai and teaches meditation, pranayama and kriyas for all TTCs at the Institute. Life came full circle when he taught his rst 7-Day Camp. “You are lucky that you all have come to the Institute,” he reminds his students with a big smile on his face.

They say, ‘Conversation is food for the soul,’ well, we experienced some soulful conversations about food with the most celebrated chef Ranveer Brar and Pujya Maa, Hansaji, on the occasion of the 6th International Day of Yoga.

Food plays an important role in our life. Yoga highly recommends that we must eat food only as our duty to look after this body, and not treat food as a pleasure. We must pay attention to what we eat because ‘as the food so is the mind.’ Our Indian food culture and tradition is truly made for us. “Try to stick to your Grandmother’s recipes and dishes - as they will never fail you or do you any damage,” says Ranveer. He further adds, “What grows together, goes together - the food that grows in your own ecosystem, affects your body in a positive manner.”

“Sattvik Food has all the nutrients that your body requires. It helps in the complete assimilation of the food, as a result, you don’t get any deciencies. Don’t eat based on the nutrient value of the food, don’t count your food. Eat only when you are hungry and drink only when you are thirsty. You don’t need a lot of food to eat, even little is enough, just to satisfy your senses. The simpler your food, the easier is your life.”

Each and every grain of Sattvik food is considered to be wholesome. Ranveer further commented that, “When you cook your food, try to keep it as simple and natural as possible. Don’t complicate your food. Sattvik food is very ingredient-based and has numerous benets. It is the most natural meal that you can consume with the least amount of processing.”

When you want to start off with Sattvik food, the easier and best way is to start with Khichadi. A simple dish that can make you appreciate food to a whole another level. “Eat food from your own Rasoi, that is the home of all the Rasas,” emphasised Ranveer.

Some key tips and takeaways from this conversation:

• Your state of mind while eating the food is equally important. Let there be joy and a stress-free state of mind.

• Ginger is a super-food that you must try to include in all your meals.

• Have fruits as a separate meal. The best time to eat fruits is between your breakfast and lunch. The three best fruits are: Banana, Coconut and Seasonal Fruits.

• Some of the easiest and healthiest breakfast options are: Poha, Upma and Sprouts.

• Always eat freshly cooked meals and avoid stale, refrigerated food.

• “Paith bharne ke liye mat khao, bhook khatam karne ke liye khao” - Hansaji.

• Eat those food items which can be soaked beforehand as it increases its nutritional value. For example, sprouts, nuts, naachni.

• “If you can’t sit down and eat, then at least sit in a cross-legged position on the chair and have your food” - Hansaji.

Q 1. What are some subtle techniques in Yoga?

A. The stage that results out of the external works is a stage that is very different. This is the junction between the external and the internal. We have worked at the external levels, physical body, breathing, our external behaviour, all this is creating a big change. The ind iv idua l i s now g radua l l y interiorising through ho may use certain external measures. He or she may use an act of breathing, even just to continue with what I said earlier. Such a thing like music, there is a concentration that comes out of music, although there is a certain sensate quality of sound. A good musician knows, he can see and hear or perceive even the sounds that are beyond the usual sound vibrations. There is a great interiorization that occurs. So the external techniques help in creating the mind, a certain introversion, a certain concentration. It is not concentration in the sense that there is nothing that you are seeing - it is just totally internal. You are concentrating on an object, and yet while concentrating, you get lost, you get within yourself, forgetting about the outside. Another instance is a painter who is involved in his painting and he is so lost that even if he had a cigarette in his hand and the cigarette has completely burnt out and even if it has hurt him a little, he is not aware. The external sensations lose their meaning because the individual has interiorised everything. Now that is considered a transition stage from external yoga to what is called internal Yoga. External yoga has external things to work on, like asanas, kriyas, pranayamas, or social relationships, the actual things that we see. In internal yoga, there is work at the subconscious level.

Q2. Can a person be involved in external Yoga and internal Yoga at the same time?

A. These are relative terms; what at one time we consider as internal, can again turn into an external, just like an ordinary individual who is too concerned with the country, a patriotic individual. Now, he is in one sense considered as too external, he does not attend to his own society, his own community, his own people, and yet the same individual if he was to attend to himself, there can be a complaint that he is too involved with others and does not look after himself. Again, if the individual starts to attend to himself too much, he will be called a selsh

individual who does not attend to others. From the Yoga point of view, even if he is attending to himself, he is attending to his body, attending to his hygiene, yet he is likely to be externalised in the sense that he is not working on his emotions, he is not working on his thoughts. That is y e t a g a i n a n o t h e r k i n d o f interiorization. Even when he is working on his thoughts and ideas, there are subtle things that we talk of in Yoga, under the Antaranga Yoga, or the internal Yoga, which he is oblivious of.

Q3. What is the subconscious?

A. There is a conscious level of our thinking, something that we all know about and can identify, and

then there is something that is behind the conscious. It is the subconscious, something that is there from the past. There are past impressions, past desires, old memories - all these are in fact more important than what goes on in our conscious mind. As they say, the conscious ‘I’ is just like 1/10th of the iceberg, 9/10th of it is the subconscious. We are totally unaware of this subconscious, and yet it is this 9/10th that is important. Even if the 1/10th is not there or not seen, there is a danger since the whole 9/10th is still there. All our actions result from subconscious impressions. So the Yogi is interested in something that is still internal; he is not interested just in the conscious. He is interested in something that is making the conscious cause certain actions, a certain thinking, certain desires.

Q4. What are the effects of Pratyahara on the individual?

A. This is important as after this, there is no further involvement with the external world; on the contrary, a great steadiness has occurred. A result has come, and from then onward, even if the Yogi or students of Yoga carried on any activity, they carry it on from a different perspective and a different angle. If they look at Asanas, they are no more a physical act, rather they bring steadiness and quiteness and lend grace to movements. The external behaviour is not one of restraint, on the contrary, a person is very relaxed in all activities and gains a lot. This has occurred because the mind is introverted. A change has occurred where the individual now holds on to the internal part of his personality, his subconscious where he has a lot to do. He doesn’t allow any future extroversion.

TESTIMONIAL

Terrence Lewis Celebrity Choreographer

The Institute has given me much much more than just asanas. The teachings at the Institute are always about how to live and breathe yoga. Every action that we perform has some or the other concepts of yoga attached to it and every teacher here teaches by example. Whether it is about performing duties without expectations or about "Sa tu dirgha kaala nairantarya satkaara asevito dridha bhumih". There is no theory, everything has a practical approach and making it easy to imbibe the teachings in practice. My biggest learning at the Institute has been to "respond and not react!" This learning helped me navigate through many difcult conversations at work and in my personal life. It actually kept me away from making hasty and wrong decisions. I am and will always be grateful to the Institute and every teacher for making us not just healthy but better human beings.

While designing our own Institute’s syllabus, we wanted true yoga to be a part of it. That’s exactly what we got from The Yoga Institute - authentic Yoga. The techniques shared by TYI have taught our students not only asanas and pranayama but also how to deal with mental stressors. It taught the students how to live life and take care of the pressure that comes along with this competitive eld. Hansaji is a storehouse of wisdom and it is always great to talk to her and uplift the self!

Our employees found the online session conducted by The Yoga Institute to be an authentic experience. Initially, they had doubts about doing yoga on a virtual platform, but found it very effective

in the end. We have received much positive feedback from our employees.

The sessions were conducted very professionally.

I was very lucky to have a friend recommend The Yoga Institute for my TTC, and when I got to know that they would be doing an online TTC, I decided to join. I was a bit skeptical when I signed up, as I was not sure how an online format would be conducted, but all my doubts were taken away by the amazing and knowledgeable teachers we had. They were always open for taking all our questions, and we were able to learn a lot and had a fun atmosphere in each class. Even though it was in an online format, we were able to bond with our teachers. Also I really have to praise our course coordinator Manija, she was always available for all our queries and she answered them in a timely and professional manner, she made us feel a part of the Institute family. I am very grateful for the 200 hrs TTC; it broadened my understanding of Yoga and I can’t wait to take on my next course.

I did a One Month Teachers Training Course and my experience was wonderful. If one wants to understand yoga in its true essence, then this is the right place. Apart from practical knowledge, this

institute teaches how to incorporate yogic ways in our busy chaotic schedule. I would like to add that life gives us a second chance and that is The Yoga Institute.

The Yoga Institute! I believe the Universe plans everything and it was planned that I will come here for my 1 Month TTC course! Such an amazing experience of going inwards and being able to deal with myself better and being more loving and accepting towards others. I read a quote recently: "Discover your inner gift and share it with others!". Shri Yogendraji had done the same and the entire Yogendra family is doing it day in and out. Thank you! It is amazing to be a part of the Yoga Institute family.

FOUNDER, SHRI YOGENDRAJI

YOGASATTVAMONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE, INDIAOLDEST ORGANISED YOGA CENTRE IN THE WORLD

JULY 2020 ISSUE

“Seeing good in a situation

will bring more happiness. ”

Shri Yogendraji - Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance

Shri Yogendraji has dened mind (Chitta) as an all-pervading, subtle, evolutive amalgam of three ingredients (Gunas) of matter. Swami Vivekananda has also compared the mind as an all-pervading circumference of a circle considered as an individual with its centre as his body. Shrimad Bhagvad Gita also refers to the simile (6/34) of controlling the mind like controlling Vayu (space/air). As such, comparing the mind-space with physical space can help us in better understanding the managing of our own mind.

The physical space encompassing the universe as visualized by Greek philosophers was vast, empty, passive, surrounding the earth in which heavenly objects were encircling as if the earth was in the centre and the world was moving around it. Ever since Newton published the laws of motion and gravitation, the cosmos has taken a major shift in its contents and dimensions as also in understanding the structure of the Universe as a whole.

Physical space, like mental modications (Chitta Vrittis) is now considered as incessantly governed by gravitation - acting like a 'Karmendrya' - and the electromagnetic spectrum providing media for highspeed communication, acting like a 'Jnanendrya'. Quantum mechanics deals with fundamental units of matter and energy providing resources of energy for sustenance of physical space, similar to the assimilation of bio energy (Prana) for the sustenance of mind-space.

Scientists believe that Nature mysteriously operates on mathematical principles and as such, they predict and discover natural laws by a solution of equations. This is similar to mystics who visualize the reality of mind-space with their total faith in the Absolute. In everyday life, both views are valid and useful. But in spite of hightech progress, one cannot ignore the intuitional aspects as emphasized by mystics. The survival and progress of our present civilization will depend on how we can bring about the reconciliation of these developments.
