CFC Trials Summary 2014
‘Seed raised fillers’ trials (outdoors and under protection)
Purpose of trial: To investigate the continuity and vase life of a range of ‘seed raised fillers’.
Seed supplier: Moles Seeds and Ball Colegrave.
Varieties: Ammi visnaga, Anthriscus sylvestris, bupleurum, cosmos, carthamus, dill,
euphorbia and ridolfia.
Planting density: Variable but most thinned to 4 to 6 cms.
Planting date: Week 21 to week 30.
Harvesting date: Dill harvested in week 29, ridolfia in week 30 and bupleurum in week 31.
Results/observations to date: Huge difference in the speed of growth of the different
species with only the first plantings of dill, bupleurum and ridolfia harvested to date.
CFC trials summary
19
Leucanthemum trial
Purpose of trial: To investigate a new range of cut flower Leucanthemum.
Seed supplier: Realflor.
Varieties: ‘Real Fancy’, ‘Real Fizzy’ and ‘Real Frilly’.
Planting density: 16 per sq/m.
Planting date: Week 17 from a well pinched plant.
Harvesting date: Week 25 to 29.
Results/observations to date: Produces very strong stems with a good vase life but
second year performance and economic viability needs to be investigated.
CFC trials summary
20
Alstroemeria trial
Purpose of trial: To demonstrate and determine the viability of a seasonal crop of
alstroemeria both outdoors and under protection using older varieties which do not have
royalties charged on them.
Plant suppliers: Parigo.
Varieties: ‘Apollo’, ‘Avanti’, ‘Bonanza’, ‘Candy’, ‘Dana’, ‘Flaming Star’, ‘Friendship’, ‘Golden
Delight,’ ‘Nina’, ‘Orange Supreme’, ‘Pink Sensation’ and ‘Tanya’.
Planting density: 5 per sq/m.
Planting date: Week 22 under protection and week 23 outside.
Harvesting date: Some short stems flowering in early July but no stems of marketable
length until week 31 (from the protected crop).
Results/observations to date: Obviously too early to fully assess the full potential of this
crop but most of the varieties have established well and look as if they will yield large
numbers of good strong stems.
CFC trials summary
21
Zinnia trial
Purpose of trial: To demonstrate a range of zinnia which have been shown to be suitable
for cut flower production in the US trials and try to enhance the vase life.
Plant supplier: Benary.
Varieties: ‘Giant’ and ‘Oklahoma’ (various colours).
Planting density: 64 per sq.m.
Planting date: Week 18 and 22.
Harvesting date: First stems ready in week 26.
Results/observations to date: Plants have grown rapidly and produced a large number of
stems but in the past few weeks they have developed problems which have provisionally
been attributed to Xanthomonas bacterial blight. However, after cutting back the worse of
the infection and spraying with Amistar (azoxystrobin) the crop is now producing some stems
suitable for vase life testing.
CFC trials summary
22
Sedum trial
Purpose of trial: To assess range of standard and unusual varieties and assess the
potential of the crop in the UK.
Plant supplier: Kolster BV.
Planting date: 2010 and 2011.
Harvesting date: July onwards.
Results/observations to date: The crop produces no marketable stems in the first year of
planting but in the second and third years the stem count, weight and length have been very
impressive. The crop is generating quite a bit of market interest and some commercial
plantings have now been made.
CFC trials summary
23
Eryngium trial
Purpose of trial: To demonstrate some of the new ranges of eryngium and investigate their
vase life.
Plant supplier: Armada, Florensis and Kolster BV.
Varieties: ‘Arabian Dawn’, ‘Blue Bell’, ‘Deep Blue’, ‘Magical Blue Falls’, ‘Magical Cloud’,
‘Magical Purple Falls, ‘Magical Star’ and ‘Marbella’.
Planting date: 2011 and 2013.
Harvesting date: June onwards.
Results/observations to date: The ‘Blue Bell’ and ‘Marbella’ flowered first in week 23 with
the ‘Magical’ series and ‘Deep Blue’ still flowering in week 30. There is a big difference in
flower form and yield with some varieties e.g. ‘Marbella’ perhaps being better suited to the
‘higher end’ bouquets. Vase life on all varieties seems to be very good. They are also a
haven for wildlife especially bees and butterflies.
CFC trials summary
24
Aster ericoides trial (September flower)
Purpose of trial: To demonstrate new double varieties grown both outdoors and under
protection and investigate season extension using blackout.
Plant supplier: Armada.
Varieties: ‘Cairo’, ‘Cape Town’, ‘Cassy’ and ‘Chicago’.
Planting date: Overwintered from 2013.
Harvesting date: Very close to flowering in week 31.
Results/observations to date: There is a lot of variability between varieties this year with
some experiencing premature budding. However, looking at the current stage of the crop, a
second flush of flower looks feasible.
CFC trials summary
25
Sunflower trial
Purpose of trial: To investigate new varieties for indoor production.
Seed supplier: Pro Veg.
Varieties: ‘Gallilee Orange’, ‘Happy Face’, ’Helios Flame’, ‘Lemon Party’ ‘Rio Carnival’,
‘Solar Flash’, ‘Stellar Sun’, ‘Superted’, ‘Tall Timber’, ‘Tanya’ and ‘Tavor Flash’ and numbered
varieties PV174, PV 197 and PV199.
Sowing date: Week 27 and 30.
Harvesting date: Not yet flowering.
Results/observations to date: Variable germination which will need to be addressed if
these varieties are to show commercial promise.
CFC trials summary
26
Trachelium trial
Purpose of trial: To demonstrate the varieties currently available.
Plant supplier: Florensis and Nordham Plants.
Varieties: ‘Lake Michigan’ blue, purple and white and ‘Corine’ purple.
Planting density: 64 per sq/m.
Planting date: Week 22 and week 27.
Harvesting date: Very close to being ready in week 31.
Results/observations to date: The plants produced their bud when the stems were quite
short but now look as if they will produce marketable flower stems.
CFC trials summary
27
Column stocks – Fusarium control (pot trial)
Purpose of trial: To investigate the (experimental) level of Fusarium control that can be
achieved when using chemical drenches at x2 and x4 times the recommended label rate.
Variety: ‘Centum’ deep blue.
Planting date: Week 29 (also inoculated with Fusarium at the same time).
Harvesting date: Not yet harvested.
Results/observations to date: Too early to make any observations yet.
CFC trials summary
28
Hardy foliage trial
Purpose of trial: To demonstrate the potential for hardy foliage production in the UK.
Seed supplier: Kolster BV.
Planting date: Mainly spring 2010, plus some in spring 2011. Pruned back very hard during
early March 2014.
Results/observations: Most subjects have established well and marketable stems were
cropped from 2012 onwards. Some commercial plantings have now been made on local
nurseries.
CFC trials summary
29
Other trials
Other small ‘look see’ trials were undertaken with the following plant species: delphinium,
dicentra, gypsophila, leonotis, ornamental peppers and ‘Tiara’ spray carnations. Most of
these will not flower until later in the season.
