The vigilant servants awaiting the master’s return in today’s gospel don’t have anything on my mother. During my adolescence, she was the master of vigilant waiting, even in sleep. When I’d arrive home after a night out, I’d creep quietly into her bedroom to let her
know I was home. Though she appeared to be asleep, she slept the sleep of a parent with a teenager— one eye and ear always open, awaiting the turn of the key. It was amazing how she knew, even while half asleep, whether something was wrong. The night I came home after a boyfriend had broken up with me, I gave her the usual kiss goodnight, and she immediately turned on the light and asked, “What’s wrong?” Her maternal senses were on alert even in the middle of the night. That’s true vigilance. Whatever you call it—Spidey sense, maternal h u n c h e s , s p i r i t u a l
vigilance—Jesus challenges us in today’s gospel to be ready for God at all times. I don’t think that means being hyperalert, expecting God to pounce from around the next corner. Instead, I think it’s being like the mother of a teenager; able to rest, but with a highly tuned intuition about her child’s feelings and needs. We don’t know the exact moment we’ll meet God next; we don’t know the exact time God will call us home. But we can prepare ourselves for those moments by nurturing our prayer life, refusing to let wounds fester, seeking forgiveness, and living each day out of gratitude. These practices deepen our spiritual vigilance, helping us be more prepared for God’s ongoing encounters and for the moment God calls us home.

Who was Maximilian Kolbe?
What can you tell me about the priest who saved the life of a man during the Holocaust by trading places with him?
Saint Maximilian Kolbe was the first person to be canonized by the Church as a martyr of charity. He did not die specifically for his witness to the faith during religious persecution, but because he gave his life for another out of his Christian commitment to love. Maximilian was born in Poland in 1894. He entered the community of the Conventual Franciscans in 1910. His assignments took him from Poland to Japan and back again. Everywhere he went, he promoted devotion to Our Lady through his organization and development of the Militia of the Immaculata. His role in publishing materials for that organization led to his 1941 arrest by the Nazis. He was sent to the prison camp of Auschwitz.
Maximilian died at Auschwitz in 1941 when he volunteered to take the place of Francis Gajowniczek, a man with a family, in a starvation bunker. The Nazis
agreed to Maximilian’s request, and for two weeks he turned the starvation bunker into a prayer cell. He led his fellow condemned prisoners in prayer and song until he was too weak and most were dead. Maximilian was finally killed by injection of carbolic acid. Mr. Gajowniczek survived the war and lived over forty years more. He gave testimony to Maximilian’s heroic charity and attended his canonization in 1982.

Bible Study
Paul's letter to the Galatians speaks directly to the heart of Christians and addresses the most important question we can ask: "What must we do to be saved?" This fascinating letter reveals the merciful love that God the Father has for us, his children. It speaks of the extraordinary gift of salvation that Jesus has won for us, and it explains how we can unite ourselves to Christ's redeeming sacrifice through faith and love. Galatians is a study that will reignite your love for God as you learn of the astonishing love God has for you. If you are interested in joining us on Wednesday morning or evening, please pick up a registration form located in the literature rack in the back of church today. Please register before August 30, 2013 so we can order books. Further details and registration forms can be found on our website or Contact Gundy Dahm at

Join dynamic, faith-filled Catholics at On Fire With Faith at Our Lady of
the Hills Church in Columbia, SC on September 20-21, 2013. If you have any questions, please visit the website at www.onfirewithfaith.org, e-mail cathy@catholic-doc.org or call 843-402-9115 X 18.

DISCIPLES CALLED TO WITNESS IN THE YEAR OF FAITH
Disciples Called to Witness: The New Evangelization A statement by the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis. Do you understand the meaning of the word catechesis? Did you know that through our baptism, we are called to proclaim the Good News to all people, everywhere and at all times? How often do we fail to realize that we are called to be Christ's witnesses to the world?
How often do we reach out to our missing brothers and sisters by inviting them to join us at Mass or by asking why they no longer feel welcomed at Church? How would YOU consider helping to assist us with passing on the Faith?
Please contact Saint Gregory the Great PREP office by volunteering to assist with: office assistants,, catechists, session assistants, hall monitors, reception assistants, helpers with registration and group facilitators.
For more information kindly call the Parish Religious Education office at 815-3100 ext 250.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’S)
Question – When will the main church remodeling be completed?
Answer – The target date for the painting and re-finishing of the flooring is August 8th. The main church has been painted except for the completion of the choir loft area and touch up work after the flooring re-finishing is completed. New ceiling fans have been installed and will be helpful with the air circulation. LED lights have been installed to help reduce the electric expenses. The balance of the remaining work will include painting of all the various rooms within the church and re-staining of the pews. Some members of the Knights of Columbus will be helping on those projects, which can be completed at a later date.
Question – It is getting harder to enter St. Gregory the Great, so what is being done and any suggestions?
Answer – As you know, both deceleration lanes (east & westbound) have been removed from the SGG entrance as part of the six lane expansion of US 278, which is on schedule for completion in November 2013. In addition, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has already implemented Beaufort County’s plan to move the current SGG entrance 400 feet further east towards the Bluffton Fire Station. Monsignor Cellini has continually expressed the Parish’s safety issue concerns for our parishioners, students and school parents. He has personally met with the Beaufort County Council Chairman Paul Sommerville, spoke with the local representative Jerry Stewart and has had meetings with the various parties involved.
Until such time that Beaufort County constructs the Frontage Road, the suggestion to our parishioners entering SGG is that:
Eastbound traffic should go to Eagle’s Point, Pinckney Colony Road or to the Rose Hill traffic light and then make the turn to head westbound and enter SGG, as all three medians have a deceleration lane.
Question – How are we doing with the 2013 Bishop’s Annual Appeal?
Answer – Through June 30th, a total of 630 SGG parishioner families or 18% have contributed $106, 044 to the campaign, which ends December 31, 2013.

How to Listen in Adoration
When you open your heart to the Holy Spirit, He will comfort you, counsel you, and give you strength.
Do not start your meditation by asking questions or telling the Holy Spirit what you want. He already knows. Start simply enjoying His presence. This is the first step in meditation: this intimacy with the Holy Spirit. Continue to enjoy His presence, His peace, and His comfort until He speaks to you. At this stage, you reach the next step in meditation: listening.
“To be alone with Jesus in adoration and intimate union with Him is the Greatest Gift of Love – the tender love of Our Father in Heaven.” Mother Teresa
We need Adorers for the following times:
Sunday 1:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. Wednesday 12:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m. Monday 12:00 a.m., 1:00 a.m., 2:00 a.m. Friday 1:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m. Tuesday 11:00 a.m. Saturday 6:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m.
Registration forms are on the side boards in the back of the church and on the sign-in table by the Chapel. Please leave your completed form on the sign-in table by the Adoration Chapel or contact Paula Hoffman at 705-2399 or email her at pdhdolphin@hargray.com

Make a difference
If you're looking for a way to respond to Our Lord's call to "Love one another
as I have loved you," we invite you to help us with the poor and the needy of greater Bluffton.
We are The St. Vincent de Paul Society of SGG. We are all volunteers. We respond to calls from our help line by visiting callers in their homes, apartments, and trailers. They're in crisis over some emergency. They need food, rent, water, and electricity.
We see their needs up close, hear their stories, verify the facts and make sure your money does as much good as possible.
Come join us. As a contributor, or as a member, you'll be doing the very best you can for the needy...you'll be answering Christ's call...and you'll be making a difference, one family at a time.
