W elcome to the style guide for the Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (NPLC) – a unique model of primary health care designed to deliver patient-centred treatment and care. It is important for this innovative program to successfully
establish and maintain its own visual identity within the broader health care family overseen by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. And it is essential for the NPLC to project a consistent professional look and unified voice throughout all of its communications. This guide is set up to help its users accomplish this objective – by clearly outlining the rules, specifications and guidelines that define the overall NPLC visual identity. Consistency of usage is the key to ensure that the NPLC visual identity is always communicated in the correct visual style and manner.
The NPLC guide will provide useful information for planning, creating and executing new projects for both internal and external communications. The visual identity covers stationery, websites, reports and PowerPoint presentations. It is also designed to support bilingual communities in both official languages. This guide provides instructions for graphic designers to follow explicit rules and guidelines, and also includes the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) templates for internal use by clinic staff. Importantly, the visual identity also allows for individual clinics to have their own look within the NPLC family. This is achieved by a wordmark personalized for each clinic and a selection of photography for use in their communications that reflects the community they serve. It is our hope that these materials will be of value to the NPLC – as we take steps to provide a more personalized brand of community health care.
Note: For guidelines to applications not listed in the table of contents, please follow the many examples throughout this guide for style and execution.

2Wordmark
A key element of the visual identity is the NPLC wordmark. The wordmark is made up of a carefully designed type treatment which emphasizes each clinic’s official name, while spelling out Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic. The wordmark’s components are a vertical line, the clinic’s name and the English and and French translation of Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic.
The artwork for this wordmark needs to be personalized for each clinic with its name in English and French. Please contact the Communications and Marketing Division at 416 327-9666 to request the electronic file. To create artwork for your clinic, a graphic designer will need to add the name to the wordmark. (See page 3 for instructions).

5 Outline the font.
6 Save the file using an appropriate name for the document.
4Wordmark – clear space
English wordmark version
Clear space formula In order to preserve the visual integrity of the NPLC wordmark, it is essential to allow suf-ficient space around the graphic so that it never appears crowded. The clear space is determined by using the width of the word Nurse. This simple formula can be used regardless of size. This measurement also defines the spaces between the rule and the English and French text.
Bilingual version
Rule width The width of the rule is equal to the diameter of the dot on the lowercase i within the word Practitio-ner. This formula can be used regardless of size.

IMPORTANT NOTE The CMYK, RGB and HTML values may be different than those for PMS 369 and 5275 in Pantone colour guides or those in graphic design software.
Two colours have been chosen for the NPLC visual identity. The lively green is positive and uplifting, while the deep violet reflects the professionalism of the clinic’s staff. These colours are part of the ministry colour palette where they are named “Winter Violet” and “Killarney Moss.” In this document, they are referred to as the NPLC signature colours. Consistent use of this colour will help build a family resem-blance for all NPLC communications. The PMS, CMYK, RGB and HTML values have been individually selected to ensure maximum consistency across different media and applications. Only use the values below when developing communications for the NPLC.
Colour values NPLC signature colours can be shown at different screen values (less than 100%). A colour has to be used at 100% before subse-quent values of the same colour can be used in the application. While not officially included, black is a colour that is always available for use.

Myriad Pro Condensed Typeface (OpenType)
Typography plays an important role in the NPLC visual identity. The two typefaces that should be used for NPLC externally designed communications are ITC Century and Myriad Pro Condensed. ITC Century, a serif typeface, has a modern look with timeless appeal, and Myriad Pro Condensed, a contempo-rary sans serif, projects a sense of warmth, spirit and personality. Myriad Pro Condensed complements ITC Century particularly well and should provide a useful contrast for use in subheads and captions, among other applications.
Complete typefaces Both ITC Century and Myriad Pro Condensed have a complete range of weights from light to bold or black. Note: The ITC Century font family includes a particularly heavy weight, Ultra, in addition to those shown. Do not use the Ultra weight, as it is too bold for most applications.
Purchasing the typefaces ITC Century is available from Adobe at: http://store4.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&event=displayFontPackage&code=141
Myriad Pro Condensed is available from Adobe at: http://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&event=displayFontPackage&code=1707
Fonts for internally produced communications When ITC Century and Myriad Pro Condensed are not available, you can substitute Times Roman and Arial Narrow for internally produced communications only.

8Photography
Photography and not illustration has been chosen to capture the humanity and multicultural diversity of the people and communities served. The imagery must reflect one or more of the following themes: patient focused, modern, professional, and compassionate.
Illustration is not to be used except for diagrammatic purposes.
To assist NPLCs with their communications, a library of royalty-free images are available, some of which are shown here. Please contact the Communications and Marketing Division at 416 327-9666 to request the images.
9Real-life photography
To reflect the individual communities and the population each NPLC is serving, it is acceptable to use real-life photography. This is an opportunity for each NPLC to be unique while still remaining part of the group of clinics. To ensure that the imagery works harmoniously with the other elements of the visual identity, change the imagery to a duotone which combines black with the NPLC signature colour – winter violet. Avoid using real-life photography in full colour.

Ontario logo and the arc graphic
The Ontario logo consists of the stylized trillium symbol with the “Ontario” wordmark. The letterforms have been custom designed and cannot be reproduced by typesetting. Use of this logo is permitted only with written permission from the Communications and Information Branch. It is important that the arc graphic be used consistently. For this reason, it is available as a digital file. To request the artwork for the Ontario logo and the arc graphic, please contact the Communications and Marketing Division at 416 327-9666. Do not try to recreate the artwork yourself. Certain applications require the use of the Ontario logo and the arc graphic. These applications include reports, PowerPoint presentations and flyers.
Clear space formula The position and scale of the wordmark, arc graphic and the Ontario logo needs to be consistent regardless of the size or format. Below are guidelines and a formula for measuring the position and size of these elements. The formula is based on the stroke of the lowercase “i”, minus the dot, in the word Ontario. This formula can be used regardless of scale. The measurement below and to the right of Ontario logo are minimum distances.

PowerPoint template
PowerPoint presentations are used for internal and external purposes, for projected and hard copy presentations. The PowerPoint template comes custom designed with the NPLC wordmark, signature colours, arc graphic and Ontario logo for consistency in messaging. Each clinic will need to personalize the template for its location by adding the name in English and French. To publish an English only PowerPoint presentation, the French part of the wordmark can be removed. There is a title slide and an interior slide in each template. To economize, avoid printing the presen-tations in colour when used for an internal audience. See page 18 for tips on using this template for PowerPoint.

When creating a PowerPoint presentation, keep the page design as simple and uncluttered as possible, leaving wide margins around the text. Do not overlap text or images on the arc graphic at the bottom.
The public receives an ever-increasing amount of information; to capture and retain your readers’ attention, keep titles and subtitles concise and to the point. While this template comes with predeter-mined sizes for titles, subtitles, headlines and text, you can adjust the sizing for your individual presentation.

Tips for using Word and PowerPoint templates
.dot versus .doc The files are template files (*.dot) rather than regular Word documents (*.doc). When you double-click on any of the files, a new document will open (leaving the origi-nal untouched).
Pasting without format Simple copying and pasting of formatted text from a docu-ment into your template can lead to formatting problems. To avoid these problems, rather than Paste, select Edit, Paste Special and then select Unformatted Text from the window. This will import the text only. Now apply the appropriate style sheet provided with the template.
Deleting or adding images to the report The images in the report are stored in the header and footer area.
Adding your name in Word template To insert the name of your clinic into the template, open the file and select “view, header and footer” or double- click on the area of the wordmark on the cover page. Change the text and select “view, header and footer” again to return to the layout.
Adding your name in PowerPoint template To insert the name of your clinic into the template, open the file and select “view, master, slide master.” Change the text and select “view, normal” to return to the layout.
