LEDs are created by coating a blue LED with a layer of phosphor, this coating converts part of the blue light into yellow or red light, resulting in white light.

The conversion of the light depends on the distance it travels through the layers of phosphor. The light emitted normal to the surface is bluish white, while the one emitted nearly parallel to the surface is more yellowish.
