Our Visit to Yorkshire County Cricket Club

By Calverley Parkside Primary School

As part of our Comenius Project, we wanted to tell our partner schools about the sporting culture of Leeds. On Friday 13th December 2013, a group of us visited the Yorkshire Cricket Ground in Headingley.

The visit gave us the chance to try out the new school minibus.

After a short journey we were met at the ground by Mr. Fed and taken inside to start our tour of the club.

He took us upstairs to the press box and as we looked out over the ground we learnt about the history of YCCC.

We found out that:• The cricket ground is next to the rugby stadium in

Headingley• The club was founded in 1863• The ground is also used for England Test matches• Famous players (past and present) include Freddie

Truman, Geoffrey Boycott, Michael Vaughan, Joe Root and Johnny Bairstow

• You used to have to be born in Yorkshire to play for the club, but now they allow overseas players

• They are the most successful county cricket side, with over thirty (30!) Championship wins.

More facts…

• The ground has a special clock named after a famous umpire called Harold ‘Dickie’ Bird

• There is a hotel at the ground so you can book a room here overlooking the wicket!

• The ground has a capacity of 20,000• The club’s logo is a white rose with eleven petals (to

represent the 11 players)• The club’s colours are dark blue, light blue and yellow• They have a one-day team called Yorkshire Vikings

We got the chance to try out the kit…

We had our own training session led by a YCCC coach…

It was great fun!

After the training session we had our lunch. Apparently the players use this area too!

After our lunch we went on a fantastic tour of the grounds. We had access to some special areas…

Can you guess where we are now?

Clue: the best views in the ground and really comfy seats?

One of our favourite experiences was checking out the changing rooms…

There were lots of spaces to explore … but we didn’t fancy trying out the ice baths!

We were even able to imagine what it feels like to be a player walking down the steps to take to the field!

Calverley Parkside’s best line - up?

The view of the stands was really impressive – we tried to imagine it on match day.

And then it was time to return to school…Thank you to Nick Robinson and everyone at YCCC for an unforgettable day!
