What is Bioengineering?
• Applying engineering techniques/analysis and technology to biological and medical problems. – Some areas (biomedical engineering) are
focused on medical applications and using technology for solutions to healthcare problems (traditional).
– Others are focused on using engineering principles and ideas to understand the way biological systems are constructed.
• Bioengineering is very interdisciplinary encompassing various fields.

Medical Imaging
• MRI, PET, CAT, etc …

Biomechanics
• How stiff does the hip replacement need to be? • What kind of loads will it experience?

Biomaterials
• Mechanical properties? • Materials that are easy to
mold?• What kind of materials
are biocompatible?• Wear, tear, corrosion. • Immune Response?
