Insert String TechnologyIdle Wells

• In flowing wells, water cut increases and reservoir pressure depletion causes some wells to cease to flow.

• Gas lift well not producing due to the liquid level having dropped below the last mandrel (SPM).

Insert String TechnologyWhat is Insert String?

• The string tally consists of the following:– 2 3/8-in. O.D. tubing (spacer pipe) 15-ft, stinger and

receptacle– Upper and lower pack-off– Pack-off mandrel + GLV/orifice valve with check valve– 5- or 10-ft spacer pipe– Upper and lower tubing stop

• Install and retrieve using normal wireline operations• Installed in the existing 3 ½-in. O.D. tubing without

workover and no rig required

Insert String Technology

• Total length of one insert assembly per run is maximum 15.6-ft

• Total wireline lubricator is about 30-ft

Insert String TechnologyCase Study No. 1• TE-15L closed-in since 1988• Low THP due to water cut increase• Installed in Dec. 2002 with a total

length of 624-ft, cost: USD $74,000• Produced about 1,500 BPD gross with

60% water cut – net 600 BPD• To date still producing, FTHP 150 psig

Insert String TechnologyCase Study No. 2• TE-28 closed-in since 1987 due to

depleted reservoir pressure (from 682-to 415-psig), FTHP 20 psig

• Insert string installed in May 2003 with total length about 400-ft, cost: USD $57,000

• Produced net oil about 100 BPD and to date still producing FTHP 100 psig

Insert String TechnologyCase Study No. 3• TE-67S closed-in since 1991 due to

low THP and back pressure (flow 280 psig)

• Insert string installed in June 2003 with total length 557-ft, cost: USD $68,000

• Produced net oil about 370 BPD and to date still producing FTHP 550 psig

Insert String TechnologyCase Study No. 4• TE-67L closed-in since Dec. 2000 due

to low THP and back pressure (flow line: 280 psig)

• Insert string installed in Sept. 2003 with total length 966-ft, cost: USD $107,000

• The well was reactivated and currently flowing

Insert String TechnologyConclusion

• Pack Off Insert string is a proven technology and successfully reactivated idle wells

• Can deepen gas lift injection point below production packer

• Increase FTHP and raise up liquid level in the tubing

• Less expensive than workover and very low risk
