The International Baccalaureate® (IB) was founded in Geneva,Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation.

A group of talented, forward-thinking teachers at the InternationalSchool of Geneva, with assistance from several other internationalschools, created the IB Diploma Programme.

What started life as a single programme for internationally mobilestudents preparing for university, has today grown into four programmesfor students aged 3 to 19.

A bit of history …The programme in the early days consisted of a common pre-university curriculum and a common set of external examinations for students in schools throughout the world, seeking to provide students with a truly international education.

Although the first IB schools were predominantly private international schools, they included a very small number of private national institutions and schools belonging to state education departments.

This has changed over the years and today over half of all IB World Schools (authorized to offer one or more of our programmes) are state schools.

The IB Mission Statement

The first publicly owned school to offer the Diploma Programmein Norway (1978).

The first publicly owned school to offer Middle Year Programme 4&5 in Norway (2017).

The implementation of the MYP Programme at Blindern vgs is a two year trial funded by the community of Oslo that will be evaluated next year.

We are a “Candidate School” and we hope to be fully authorized in 20 18

Teaching in MYP

• No prescribed syllabus – flexible, open to local variations and decisions

• Focus on conceptual understanding – applying knowledge to understand ‘big ideas’ – in depth study

• Global context – why are we learning this?

• Skills – reading, writing, analyzing, investigating …

Assessment

• No external exams – internal assessment only

• Assessment: formative during a unit

summative at the end of each unit

• Each subject has 4 main objectives

• Each objective is assessed and students are given a level ofachievement that describes their performance (level 1-8)

• When all the criteria have been assessed, the total achievement level (max 32) is ‘translated’ into a grade 1-7

Our six rules at Blindern :

1. Be punctual for lessons

2. Come to lessons prepared and with all necessary materials

3. Always deliver work on time

4. Maintain focus on your subjects and be orderly during lessons

5. Leave classrooms tidy and keep the School clean

6. Be friendly and respectful of your fellow pupils and the School’s staff

Absence

– Planned absence: Parents and students notify the contact teacher in advance. Arrange with each subject teacher to catch up with anywork you will miss due to the absence.

– If sick: Parents must send an email to the contact teacher on the dayof the absence (and each following day)

– Automated notification of absence

– Students check itslearning and/or classmates to catch up on schoolwork

• 22nd August: Parent meeting

• 23rd August: Individual introductory meetings student/contactteacher

• 21st September: Parent Meeting with contact teachers

• 25th October-15th November: Individual meetings betweencontact teacher, parents and student

• December: Parent meeting about upper secondary school choice(with the IB counsellor)

• February: Individual meetings with subject teachers offered
