This same energy keeps us together or breaks us apart but always forces us forward into the future, which we are shaping every day. If you can’t wait for the future, please come and share your passion, knowledge and inspirations with the leaders of digital culture at Pause 2012.
It is my greatest pleasure to welcome you to the second instalment of Pause Digital Festival Melbourne. With one festival under our belt we’re proud to say that this year’s program is bigger and better than we could have imagined! It’s jam-packed with current and cutting edge screen content from international independent artists and directors, the finest visionaries from around

the world who are driving innovation and change within their industries and industry partners who will share their knowledge and expertise.
They all have one thing in common: passion! After only two years of running the festival it is by far the most loving and caring creative community and I’m proud to be part of it. I’m honoured for this opportunity to feel global love, to work and to get support from many online dwellers like myself, among them Andrew Diey, Jason White, Bret Heiman, Joana Uhlaczky, Andrew Maher, Erminio Putignano, Robert Stock, Kelli Keating, Hamish Curry, Joanne O’Harra, Mark Simpson and Konrad Spilva.
“The forces are in perfect balance and hence the energy of a single thought may determine the motion of the universe” – Nikola Tesla.

I’m immensely proud on this years organising committee (page 74) without whom all this wouldn’t be possible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Film Victoria for being one of the first to recognise Pause’s significance to the local digital community and for helping us position Melbourne as the capital of digital innovation. I would also like to thank all the sponsors and partners who are helping us write the Pause history books and setting the future on the right course for everyone’s benefit.
The Pause 2012 program deals with many issues that the future may bring in an engaging journey through creative visualisation and curiosity. I hope that you enjoy this year’s playground and I look forward to sharing some of the best moments with you.
Thank you.
A huge thanks to the team at FutureBrand for setting the style of this year’s festival.
You’ve captured the essence of Pause in one magnificent swoop.

WORKSHOP
ARUP is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services.“We shape a better world.”
Participants are encouraged to bring any electronic kit that they feel would be appropriate to explore hacking.
A basic electronics background is needed for this workshop.
FRANCESCO ANSELMO (Arup London)
AARON TAN (University of Melbourne)
This workshop will provide an overview of location-based services and tracking systems and an introduction to mesh networking. These include RFID (radio frequency identification), NFC (near field communication) standards, wi-fi and bluetooth hacking as well as sniffing with Arduino. You will be creating a building-wide proximity sensing network with Synapse RF100 and Processing. The workshop will offer the opportunity to hack with the Arduino and Synapse platforms to build a building-wide proximity sensing network and visualisation system.
An initial theoretical session will give an overview of mesh networking and of the available location-based services and tracking systems, including RFID, NFC and Bluetooth.
The practical session will involve the participants creating a building-wide proximity sensing network using both Arduino and bluetooth enabled mobiles and custom built radio frequency dongles.

WORKSHOP
Media Lab Melbourne promotes collaboration between artists, designers, scientists, technologists, couturiers, performers, players, crafters and creatives!
Please bring a laptop and a Kinect if you have one (although not required – we will be supplying some). Windows, OSX and Linux will be supported.
Prior knowledge of C++ is not required, however participants are encouraged to have a least basic understanding of object oriented computer coding, such as Actionscript, Javascript or PHP. The workshop will step through the installation of openFrameworks and then move on to tackle a range of topics.
PIERRE PROSKE
The introduction of the Microsoft Kinect camera in 2010 brought what used to be an incredibly exclusive and expensive technology to the masses – that of tracking objects in 3-dimensional space.
Since then we’ve seen a range of new products on the market (from companies such as Prime Sense, Soft Kinetic and Leap Motion) promising to fundamentally alter the way in which we interact with computers. While gaming using the Xbox Kinect hasn’t quite takenoff largely due to poor titles, the creative and hacking communities have been extremely busy finding novel ways to utilise these devices.
This workshop will expose participants to the numerous ways in which Kinects can be controlled, using the openFrameworks C++ toolkit for creative coders. Topics such as point cloud manipulation, 3D film making, skeleton and blob tracking will be covered.
