The rape of Maepa
Everything wet. A massive shock awaited theeducators and learners of Maepa PrimarySchool next to the R555 outside Ohrigstadon Tuesday morning when they arrived tobuild on their dream of a new generation asenvisaged by the community, the school andnearby Hannah Game Lodge, a mainsponsor of this dream.
Thieves came in the night and basicallytook everything, even the the school’s gate.Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, NkosiJosias Mahlake, on his way from Leboeng toan Executive Committee meeting inBurgersfort, immediately halted his trip whenhe saw the problem at Maepa PrimarySchool, postponed his meeting and phonedeverybody (from three cellphones, one acheerful metallic pink one), including theMEC and Disaster Management.
Alas, at the time of going to pressyesterday morning, the situation at the schoolhas not improved after the large theft, whichnot only saw all the roofing from one block ofclassrooms stolen, but also half of the roofingof the new block of classrooms, which wastaken into use only weeks ago - see page 2for more details.

All the food are gone
As far as could be determined, the thieves came with a truck, thetracks were left at the scene at Maepa Primary School and verymuch evident on Tuesday morning.
Apart from three quarters of the roofing and the school gate thatwere stolen, the locks of all the security gates and doors to allclassrooms in the older block of classrooms were broken and at oneclassroom at the the new block, a whole wooden door was stolen. The door to the brand new computer centre was also broken open(photograph lef), but the the good news is that no computerequipment was stolen.
The computers were taken to Hannah Game Lodge in earlierweeks because the security situation at the school prompted theprincipal, Mr Steven Mkhabela to request the game lodge to takethe computers for safekeeping. Although Mr Mkhabela submittedrequests for improved security at the school, nothing has transpiredyet.
The little tin shack where feeding scheme meals for learners areprepared, was also raided. It seems from evidence on the scenethat the school’s wheelbarrow was used to transport the cookingpots to the thieves’ vehicles, as all the cooking utensils, pots andpans are gone, as well as the wheelbarrow. Worse, almost all thefeeding scheme food for February were stolen. “For us it is bad, because for many children, the meal they get at school is their onlyproper meal of the day. It is also difficult to teach children whenthey are hungry. Apart from that, is the fact that everything is wetnow, including some text books we received from the Department ofEducation in Limpopo” said Mr Mkhabela.
Hannah Game Lodge immediately arranged for the roof of thenew block, which was donated by Hannah Game Lodge and othersponsors, to be covered. The older block of classrooms was stillopen by yesterday morning. Disaster Management maintained thatit was the responsibility of the Education department, while in itsturn, the department has not responded to the principal’s reportsand calls for help by the time of going to press.
In the meantime, businesses such as Charity Stores inBurgersfort has started to respond to Maepa Primary School’s plightby donating stuff the school may need at the moment. A meetingwas also held with parents about the problems at the school and itwas agreed that schooling will recommence today. As far aspossible children will bring their own food and the classroomswithout roofs will also be used. If it rains, no school for those pupils...

Looking dam good...
De Hoop dam is starting to look more and more like a dam as it is starting to fill up afterheavy rains in the catchment area. Impounding is however not taking place and as fast asthe water flows through the sluices the dam empties again. According to the Departmentof Water Affairs a number of legal issues still have to be sorted out before impoundmentcan commence. An official document in this regard did not reach the newspaper in timebefore going to press.

4 NEWS 8 FEBRUARY 2013
Next week Thursday, Parliament will officiallyopen for 2013 in Cape Town. This opening is usually a glamorous affair andis marked by die State of the Nation Address(SONA) by the President of the country. The event is usually attended by all influencialpolitical figures as well as former Presidents, the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court andmembers of the judiciary, the Governor of theReserve Bank as well as Ambassadors andDiplomats of the country. It is the joint sitting ofthe National Assembly and the National Councilof Provinces.2008 was the first year since 1994 the SONAtook place without former presidents NelsonMandela and FW de Klerk in attendance. The SONA is broadcast live on television andthe address is scheduled to start at 19:00. Thespeech the president delivers is published inall 11 official languages of South Africa on thegovernment communications and InformationService website. In his speech, the president usually gives areport on the status of the nation. This meanshe will ‘take stock’ of the country’s domesticand foreign situation and chart a commondirection that should be taken to achieve thegoals of creating a better life for all SouthAfricans.Fashion trends are usually something that isbeing watched as the guests arrive atParliament. A whole ceremony preceeds theofficial speech. This includes mounted policeescort, military ceremonial motor escort and thelining of the President’s route to Parliament bythe South African National Defence Force(SANDF), a red carpet at Parliament, a nationalsalute by the Ceremonial Guard of the SANDFand a military band. Usually there is also a fly-past by the South African Air Force and a 21-gun salute. The 21-gun salute originates fromthe 14th century when canon and firearmscame into use. In 1842, the 21-gun salutebecame the international norm for the highesthonour a nation rendered. It is fired in honourof the Head of State, the national flag, the Headof State of a foreign nation, a member of areigning royal family and a former Head ofState.Civilians can participate through the JuniorGuard of Honour consisting of school students,a Civil Guard of Honour consisting ofrepresentatives of civil society organisationsand Eminent Persons nominated by ProvincialSpeakers from all nine provinces. Entertainersusually perform on a stage in the publicparticipation area.We asked readers what they would like to hearPresident Jacob Zuma say in his State of theNation Address and whether they will bewatching the event unfold.
Ms Tebogo Tebele said: “We’ve lost hope. So he must just not make empty promises nextweek. It feels like they are saying this and that, but nothing happens. We’ll watch it at home onthe TV”. With her are Zodwa and Koketso.

Me. Ina Burger sê: “Korrupsie in die parlement en staat is ‘n probleem. Ek wil hê hulle moet in2013 daarvan ontslae raak en aandag aan ons land se paaie gee. Veral LImpopo!” By haar isBianca.
Mr MD Mampa said: “Their priorities for 2013should be addressing crime and education.Even now, they have not delivered books toevery school. Schools also don’t have moneyto run properly. They must not use educationto fight each other and try to get power. If I havetime, I’ll watch the SONA at home”.
Mr Justice Mphahlele said: “What I need to hearfrom the President - what will make me happy,is when he tackles issues of education head-on. Problems with books and all the otherproblems are affecting the children andeducators. Education is a nation. They mustalso fast track the two new universities plannedfor the country so it will ease admissions nextyear. It is turning learners to crime if theyachieve and go through the process, but cannotgo study further. I’ll be watching to understandwhat is planned and I’ll watch their flashyclothes. You’ll see fashion in movement”.
Ms Lydia Phala said: “I want the SONA to focuson job creation also salary increases foreducators. They work very hard”.
