EPEGA EPEGA
• The European Poultry, Egg and Game Association (EPEGA) is a confederation of bodies which are linked to
the European poultry, egg and game industry. EPEGA comprises organisations involved with these products
through the wholesale and foreign trade and the food-processing and food industries. Its chief task is to
represent its members at the institutions of the European Union, in EU Member States and in third
countries. Rooted in the German market, EPEGA has a European profile through a representative office in
Brussels and a network of European partners and contacts in the Member States.
Our tasks I
• EPEGA sees itself as a European lobby group of the poultry, egg and game industry. This encompasses the
whole economic sector from production to marketing. Matters related to intra-Community and
international trade and the promotion of the EU’s trade with global markets are especially important.

• The responsibility of European Poultry, Egg and Game Association (EPEGA) is to represent and defend the
interests in all expert matters of members from EU States in the scope of game and poultry meat against
national authorities and the EU Commission.
• EPEGA assists in all matters concerning health and veterinary inspection problems concerning the trading in
poultry meat.
• The Association informs and comment on subjects of paramount importance in the area of wholesale and
foreign trade. This includes the publication of EU laws, directives and regulations, of importation rules, the
publishing of contingents and quota for associated and developing countries

Controlling for Foodsafety TRACES
• is the European Commission's multilingual online management tool for all sanitary requirements on intra-
EU trade and importation of animals, semen and embryo, food, feed and plants.
• its main objective is to digitise the entire certification process and linked procedures, and is in line with the
declaration of the Digital Agenda for Europe.
• Users from many more countries worldwide are interconnected through TRACES, centralising all data,
simplifying and accelerating the trading process.
• TRACES facilitates the exchange of information between all involved trading parties and control authorities
and speeds up the administrative procedures.

Animal Welfare • Animal Welfare became a „hot topic“ in many political discussions
• Particularly in the northern European countries such as The Netherlands, Germany, Austria
and a few others, NGOs are leading the public opinion with extremely strong media activities,
forcing the large retailers to implement Animal Welfare Standards as key element in their
meat purchasing procedure.
• The national poultry producers had to respond by adapting their production systems,
standards, breeds and certifications.

• Label Rouge certification was launched in 1961
by the French government
• Creation of the Synalaf in 1967, French
Association for the Poultry Labels (Syndicat
National des Labels Avicoles de France)
• 90.2 millions of chicken obtained the
certification Label Rouge in 2013

Organic EU • European regulation: n° 834/2007 and n°
889/2008.
• Production in France: 7 000 T/year
• USA: To sell chicken labeled "organic," growers
must comply with the USDA National Organic
Program (NOP).

Free Range & Traditional Free Range • Free Range is a European Certification
• Traditional Free Range is similar to Label Rouge

Fermier / Backyard type • This "Fermier" type of production is a world designation
• There is no standards as such
• This type of farming is of local tradition and produced with local male's
crosses such as Sumatra, Asyl, Shamo and other types of local males
• Usually the products are sold to consumers through direct market.

Freedom Food • Freedom Food is the RSPCA's farm assurance and food labelling
scheme, created in 1994 in United Kingdom. Freedom Food label
ensure of the respect of farms to strict RSPCA welfare standards,
launched in 1996. www.freedomfood.co.uk
• Specifications:
– The welfare of a breed is assessed according to the RSPCA
Broiler Welfare Assessment Protocol. The JA757 is the
benchmark used in these trials.
– Can be used for Indoor, Free Range and Organic.
– Indoor with enriched environment: Objective of 2.2 Kg / 4.85
lbs with 1.95 FCR.

Free Range & Traditional Free Range • This label was introduced by the Animal Welfare Association in the Netherlands. "Beter Leven" wants the best welfare for broilers and uses a 3-star
system:
• Enriched environment (perches, straw balls...), 56-d as minimum age and lower density plus winter garden (1-star) or Free range (2-stars) -> 3-Stars =

Chicken of Tomorrow • Agreement for all fresh broiler meat sold in the
supermarkets = ±2.5 M broiler/week = about 25-30% of
the total production volume in NL
• Use of slow growing breed from 2015 (max. 50g or
0.11lb/d) with at least the breederfemale or the breeder
male
• Lower footpad lesions
• Use of RTRS soya
• Reduction of ammonia and dust emissions
• Use of green electricity and gas (from 2020)
• Use of European protein, in case more sustainable
