CIGRE 2017- Grid Of The Future

Huiying Huang, Xiaolan Zou

October 24, 20171

Implementation of Data-driven Visualizations

• Background:• Big data from power systems: digital relays, meters, equipment monitors,

communication systems, AMI, and many more across hundreds of substations and thousands of circuits

• New IT platforms are bringing new approaches to gather and view data• Implementation of new data-driven visualizations is necessary to manage this data

and monitor assets• Goal of the project

• Create data visualizations with new software applications that:• Display real-time grid data• Analyze historical grid data

Devices

• Relays and Meters• Asset monitors for

transformers, circuit breakers, etc.

Applications

• One-Line diagrams

• Equipment dashboards

PI Application: Substation One-line Diagrams

October 24, 20174

Automatic creation of one-line diagrams in PI

• Tools used to develop new visualizations• PI Data Historian:

• PI CoreSight: a website that delivers data to the users from PI• PI ProcessBook: a tool to display data in a graphical manner• PI Web API: an interface that gives client applications read and write access to PI

• CIMSpy:• Designed to provide data integration with power system models

• Web tools• Vue.js: An open-source JavaScript framework for building user interfaces

• Clear layout without bending and overlapping

• Easy Adjustment• Flowing real-time data can

be displayed in the one-line diagram

• Benefits: • Unifies models and

graphics• Reduces human effort • Makes data access

easier

Example of Trended Measurements

October 24, 20179

• There are thousands of electrical equipment devices across Dominion’s footprint

• Each piece of equipment has measurements (10s to 100s) in PI to monitor the assets

• New PI tools are being developed to help manage these assets and their data

The Challenge of Asset Management

October 24, 201710

• Implemented a visualization tool to manage a massive quantity of data from 200+ DFRs (Digital Fault Recorders)

• Benefits realized from the dashboard

• Easily see the real-time status of all the DFRs

• Quickly identify and troubleshoot problems, both at the device level and the data level

Success with a DFR Dashboard

PI Application: Equipment Dashboards• Created a PI Dashboard platform to be used

for any type of equipment on our electric grid, such as:

• Capacitor/Reactor Banks• Transformers• Circuit Breakers

• Created a new approach to generate dashboards automatically, utilizing PI, JavaScript, and HTML5

• Reduced effort to build and maintain• Easy to modify or add new equipment• Many configuration/visual options available
