Quantitative Foresight Study● In the current era of increased computational power and Big Data, the Quantitative techniques for analysis of technology futures have assumed greater significance.
● The quantitative approach helps to have a deeper and organized insight into the interplays of various driving forces that will shape the future– TIFAC has initiated steps towards this direction. TIFAC Scientists had
a series of internal deliberations on the scope of quantitative analysis in various sectors.
– Recently a series of lecture on the topic “Introduction to Modeling of Socio-Technical Systems” by Prof. Karmeshu, JNU was also organized

MSME Export Boosting :Background● Government constituted an Inter Ministerial Group (IMG) for addressing comprehensively the challenges of falling exports from MSME Sectors
● TIFAC was given the mandate to identify, asses and facilitate/leverage development/acquisition and introduction of appropriate and requisite technologies in MSMEs towards boosting of exports.
● Four sectors were initially identified for studies: – ESDM, – Guar Gum, – Technical Textiles and
– Essential Oils (Flavours and Fragrances).
Challenge picked up● Working with Dept of Commerce, NRDC, DSIR and Industry to bring technology for value addition to India – potential for Rs 50000 Crore/Year
● Alternate applications in India to enhance the domestic base
● Identifying all raw materials, where India is major exporter without value addition– Loss of huge earnings – need for our R&D focus in
country to these
ESDM Sector● Meeting with DEITY, ELCINA, Experts● DEITY discussion

ESDM : Larger context● Problems in ESDM sector today are structural in nature and need to be addressed from the root cause itself
● TIFAC being a multi disciplinary organization needs to take up the matter comprehensively including the measures required for long term sustainability in this sector
MSME Internship program● Leveraging Capabilities of Students and Faculty of Engineering & Technical Institutions and MSME sector
● Incentive to students in two phase interaction with MSME– 6-8 weeks as intern in MSME to learn and identify problems
– They submit likely solution they would like to pursue for 2nd phase – a selected group of students supported for this phase
– 4-6 months support to develop working solutions
– TIFAC can continue to support them further(if needed) through its innovation support programs
● “Win-win” situation for both students and MSME – Students gain valuable learning of coming across real life problems and industry
gains by likely solution to their problems
– Country as a whole benefits in manufacturing and innovation
● To start with, 5 Technical Institutes have been selected and empaneled for implementing the scheme as under:– Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
– PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore
– M S Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bangalore
– Pimpri Chinchwad College of Engineering, Pune
– VIT, Vellore

Bio-process and bio-products program● Total 12 projects supported : Nine completed. One New project initiated. Since last Council meeting two projects completed:
● Process development for L-arginine amino acid by fermentation– Bioreactor scale up studies at 150lits. at BIT, Mesra completed.
– Three batches of trial runs on L-arginine with average yield of 16 gms/lits were obtained.
● Biotechnology based process for waste reduction in potato processing – Suitable enzyme (amylase with titre value ~ 40000 IU/ml) identified for potato
peel removal.
– Desired quantity of enzymes produced .
– Recycling studies of enzyme confirmed no toxic organisms.
– Potato waste used for biomanure production
Aloe Vera Extract● Ongoing Projects
– Development of novel process in isolating standardized extract of Aloe Vera and its application for diabetes control
– Extracts of aloe vera prepared in lab & pilot scale
– Clinical trial of developed product to be carried out by Company
Biofuels @ NIIST● Centre for Biofuels (Phase-II) at NIIST-Trivandrum– Aimed at developing laboratory scale processes into
workable technologies.
– Viable technology steps to be established for lignocellulosic ethanol at pilot plant (with processing capacity 80 kgs of biomass per day).
– Two biomass types (sugarcane tops & cotton stalks) were selected for conducting pilot plant trials.
GDP and Technology● Study: relation between S&T inputs and growth

Portal for assistive aids and appliances● Dept for Empowerment of Persons with Disability project aims to bring
under one portal all the assistive aids and appliances available within India. ● It lists
– Work done in India in labs but not yet commercialized
– Try to keep track of technology available globally but not available in India.
– Based on TIFAC’s Horizon Scanning process, it would project technology likely to come in future in this sector.
● Attempt is also being made to use an artificial intelligence backed user guide in selecting right aid/appliance.
● Launched on Dec 3, 2014(UN International Day of Persons with Disability) by President of India
● TIFAC also is developing a foresight report in this sector and suggest possible interventions
Technology for Disaster Prone Zones● TIFAC is trying to pick up areas of country which are difficult terrain and are affected by disasters on regular basis such as flood, landslide etc.
● We are trying to ascertain in an integrated way, the role technology can play in improving the quality of life of such regions
● Preliminary study is on about Kinnaur District in Himachal Pradesh
● Activity started in flood affected region of North Bihar
Student Internship● Initiated in August 2013 with a view to strengthen TIFAC efforts on technology foresight activities
● Objectives– To create a platform for close interaction with the students for mutual
enrichment
– To enable in-flow of fresh ideas and inputs into the Technology Foresight activities
– Familiarize the students with the overall process of conducting of Technology Foresight and sensitizing them about the emerging technologies, and their impacts
● So far 25 students have completed internship– We have also been receiving information about many interns finding good jobs
based on TIFAC experience!
