MEMBERSHIP CARD POLICY - As a member, it is your responsibility to validate your membership upon

entrance to the club either to the Door Attendant or the Bartender on duty - even if you may be a long time

member. This practice, along with signing-in of nonmembers is not meant to be an annoyance to you, but are

requirements by the PA Liquor Control Board who govern our private club status. Please be prepared to offer

your membership card each time you enter whether or not you feel the door attendant or bartender should

know you. Our growing membership makes this practice even more important. Guests should show a valid

driver's license or state id when signing in.

President's Message

The Sommerfest, sponsored by the Alpenrose Schuhplattlers, was

the place to be for family-friendly fun and Gemütlichkeit. It was

wonderful to see everyone having such a terrific time at our Club

once again! A big THANK YOU goes out to the Fest Committee

Chairs, Trustees, Officers and volunteers for their dedication and

hard work, to everyone in the Cultural Groups for their performanc-

es and to the folks that came and enjoyed this event. Other than a

bit of rain on Friday, I don’t see how the event could have been any better or more enjoyable. A few years ago, several Club Officers and others attended a day-long presentation by the PLCB in Grantville.

One of the things stressed that day, was the importance for Clubs to follow their Constitution, By-Laws and

House Rules. They told us of the importance of having regular reviews and updates to those documents. Not

following these documents can be a critical violation. I have appointed a committee to review a number of topics in the Constitution and By-Laws. This committee,

of nine members, consists of one representative from each of the Cultural Groups, one Officer, one Trustee

and three Club members who I have called “at-large” members because they are ones who have not been Of-

ficers or Trustees, but they are very involved with the Club and have experience with governing bodies.

The Liederkranz is a vibrant and thriving club at a time when many other clubs are not so successful. We are

very fortunate because we have an active membership who supports the Club in many ways; particularly in the

“preservation and perpetuation of German song, dance, language, customs and culture.”

In order to amend the Liederkranz Constitution, a proposal must be presented in writing, read at three mem-

bership meetings, then voted on and approved by two thirds of those members present at the third meeting.

There are currently seven amendments which are being proposed. Several of these are simply moving a line,

topic or duty from one place to another where it fits better. Some proposals clarify things that have already

taken place, but were not written out. There are proposals which increase the involvement of Cultural Groups

on the Executive Committee and the longevity of the Club as well as one which requires that Club members

must approve sizable financial expenditures.

These proposals are about remaining true to the Club’s history, mission and purpose which is crucial for the

decades ahead. The amendments under consideration will be posted on the website for anyone to read. If

anyone has questions or comments, please reach out to me or ask one of the people on the committee.

By now, I hope everyone knows we have a staff in the kitchen and regular meal service is available. This start

up is intentionally being done in a gradual and methodical approach to control expenses and minimize waste.

The idea is to focus is on fewer items, but ones that are of high quality and include German selections. Right

now, dining is offered on Thursdays and Fridays; however, as summer moves along, and vacations are over,

we anticipate adding Saturdays. Reservations are being requested and I don’t anticipate that anyone would

be turned away; but anyone who cooks at home, knows the value of knowing how much food to prepare to

avoid left-overs or wasted food. (Con’t on Page 2)

(Con’t from Page 1) The Parrot Fest is the next big event on the calendar. Please check the Sign-Up-

Genius site to see where you can help. Everyone who volunteers gets entrance and a strip of F&B tickets.

See page 10.

Work on your horseshoe throwing skill because the Club Picnic and Corn Roast is on Sunday, August 1.

This event is always a favorite; delicious food, cold beverages and good friends. There are two Saturday

Sommer Abends planned for the Club pavilion. The Alpenländers will perform on July 24; then on August

14, Tropical Sunz brings the smooth sounds of the tropics to South Chiques.

It is so nice that I can once again write about all the terrific events planned around the Club, but more than

anything it is great to be able to see everyone

enjoying the Club and the Gemütlichkeit Glenn Yanos, Club President

TrusTees’ reporT Well Summer 2021 is turning out to be Much better than Summer 2020.

The Sommerfest started with a chilly Friday night but Saturday was beauti-

ful and very well done. The beer and drinks were Great thanks to Matt and

Kate Trout along with Mike Eyster and all their volunteers. The food was

Super thanks to Connie and Barry Waltz along with Glenn Yanos’ pancakes

and their merry groups of volunteers. The Duck Race turned out to be one

of the best yet thanks to Cathy Hofer and her helpers. Results on page 12.

I could go on and on, but I don’t have the room. Bill Keays ran a very effective Spring Work Day in May. He had over 35 volunteers clicking in all di-

rections. Mulching, Power Washing, Painting, Cleaning, Carpentry, Planting and even Knife Sharpen-

ing took place with happy faces and busy hands. The lunch and of course beverages were well de-

served by all. The club operations are moving into full swing. It is so nice to see those who dug in during the pan-

demic and are now coming back for the camaraderie and good food. The kitchen is now staffed and

will be just about back to regular by mid July. Due to the heat of the summer we don’t have many outdoor projects in the next few months. Howev-

er, the heat doesn’t stop the grass from growing and our Grass Cutting crews from beating it back. I’m

sure that there is room on a couple crews for more volunteers. Contact Barry Waltz if you are interest-

ed in helping on a crew once every 4 weeks. I hope everyone enjoys a nice and safe summer. See you at the club and God Bless.

Happy Summer Everyone. The LLK Chorus is

now officially on summer break after performing

for the first time since March of 2020 at our Som-

merfest in June. It felt wonderful to be singing to

such a receptive audience and to see all the cul-

tural groups involved once again. Even though we

did not perform for over a year, we have kept in

touch with each other through a weekly email.

This is one way that we could keep our spirits

positive and not feel so isolated.

I know there are many new members that have

been inducted into our club over the past 15 months and we encour-

age these people to sincerely consider joining the Chorus once we re-

sume rehearsals in September. It is a great way to meet people, sing

wonderful German folk songs and other choral repertoire and become

actively involved in volunteering your time and talent. Please contact

me, if interested, at Shmooka@comcast.net for more information. Be

safe, stay healthy and keep a song in your heart! It is nice to be back

to normal times!

The Potato Crew - See Page 13. As long as I can remember during many of our monthly meetings at fest times I seem to hear that familiar voice - ‘I need help peeling potato's’. Yes, Renate and her crew for all these years has provided the work before the fests. No sign up, just come and help the club. This is not to select one crew over another, only one of the behind scenes crew.

Alpenrose Schuhplattler / Kindergruppe Report

As the summer months kick off with a bang we are excited to

return to dancing as a group. We started the summer off with performing for

Garden Spot High School’s “Around the World” event. Where we had the oppor-

tunity to share our culture with community youth. Our next performance was at

this years Sommerfest.

Sommerfest was the first time many of our members had the opportunity to

dance in public since the start of quarantine, and was great to see our communi-

ty continue to thrive. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to gather together and

celebrate our community and health. Looking forward to the remainder of the summer we are excited to once again have the opportunity to

perform at the Maryland German Festival, July 10 and 11. Practice for both the Adult and Kinder Gruppe have resumed and are being held every Monday night

at 7:30 for adults and the second and forth Monday at 6:30 for the Kinder.

HOBBY CHOR NOTES

Mike Braun, the Hobby Chor Golfing Event chairman (with his co-chair Dave Kraft) an-

nounces the following: "After a one year hiatus, the Hobby Chor is happy to announce the return of our 21st annu-

al Golf Outing & Steak Dinner to be held Friday, August 20, 2021 at the Four Seasons

course in Landisville and the Lancaster Liederkranz pavilion. Men, women, and mixed teams

are eligible to participate in our "scramble" format. Player registrations have been coming in

quickly and because we are limited on the number of foursomes, please register as soon as possible. We will do

our best to match any interested single players with other individuals to round out a foursome. All player regis-

trations and payments must be submitted by Friday, August 6. Proceeds from our event will continue to support our sponsorship of German student grants and scholarships

and other charitable activities within the Liederkranz, and to offset our own singing group's performance, travel,

and uniform expenses. We always welcome sponsors for our event. All sponsors will be acknowledged through

signage at the golf course and recognition in the event program and the Liederkranz newsletter. Certain

"special" sponsorships also include complimentary players. Mike, Dave, and the entire planning committee are looking forward to an enjoyable outing. Brochures about

the outing are available at the bar. For any further details, please contact Mike Braun

at schlenkerla1@gmail.com or 717-951-5553. Chorus Rehearsals – The Hobby Chor will end its Summer singing break with rehearsals starting on Fri-

day August 6. New members are welcome.

How nice it has been to finally see some things go back to normal. And the Sommerfest was a

great way to have something familiar. It was wonderful to see not only club members but everyone

enjoying being together and celebrating our German culture. The Alleweil Jung family jumped right

in with practice to be ready in time. I am proud of our group considering we have not danced in over

a year. We where not sure if we could, should or even get audience people to join us for a participa-

tion dance so it was great that we had so many willing to join us out on the dance floor. I would like to give credit to many of our group who also volunteered over the weekend in other areas of the fest.

We now are looking forward to other club events and Oktoberfest will be here before we know it. The Alleweil

Jung is always open to anyone who wants to learn some fun dances while having a lot of fun. We are a no pres-

sure group and welcome couples or singles, seasoned or new dancers of any age. If you have a teen that is inter-

ested, please reach out to us. Most of our practices are held down in the Ratskeller the 1st and 3rd Mondays each month. July we will be meet-

ing on the 12th and 19th. In August we will meet on the 2nd,16th and the 30th. If you have any questions, please email me at: carolyn.santos@hotmail.com.

The Volunteers Behind the Scenes and Their Boss

Did you know that many club members show up to prepare fest food days before a fest? They don't sign up thru Sign-Up-Genius, but respond to a call for help from Renate or by word of mouth from other members who have volunteered for past fests. One of the biggest jobs before any fest is preparing potatoes. Fresh potatoes are used for potato pan-cakes, potato salad and french fries (Parrot Fest). The duration of the fest and the expected attend-ance determines the quantity of potatoes required. For the most recent Sommerfest, a box truck deliv-ered about 900 pounds of potatoes. For the next few days, groups of volunteers processed the pota-toes by first washing them and then depending on their intended use, shred for potato pancakes, cook and peel for potato salad or cut for french fries. Each side dish has it's unique procedure and requires additional preparations with added fresh ingredients like onions, carrots and parsley. Meanwhile, other fest foods are prepared in the kitchen by baking, roasting, boiling resulting in the delicious choices available at the fest. Yes, there are many, many volunteers for club functions every day, some are out in the open and some behind the scenes.
