• Main verb forms• Infinitives, present participle, past, past

participle

Infinitives

• Basic form of verb• Has no tense• Usually formed by placing “to” in front of the

verb• Examples:– walk – pat – love – fry

Examples:

• She is going to run a marathon.• Our family wants to watch that movie.• My brother will ask to go with his friends.• The athlete lifts weights to become stronger.

Present Participle

• Present tense• Uses a helping verb like is, am, are• Add -ing to most verbs• Examples:– walk – pat – love – fry

Examples:

• I am typing my research paper.• He is eating lunch.• We are waiting in line.• They are talking about the dance.• You are making spaghetti for dinner.

Past Tense

• Past• Add -ed to most verbs• Examples:– walk – pat – love – fry

Examples:

• Lucy asked for more carrots.• Mrs. Peters assigned some math homework.• I looked through a magazine.

Past Participle

• Past tense• Uses a helping verb like have, has, or had• Add –ed to most verbs• Examples:– walk – pat – love – fry

Examples:

• He has visited Vietnam.• She has talked to the principal.
