The use of references is a means for you to help close the deal. When employers are choosing between candidates, good references definitely make the difference. So take it seriously and choose appropriately. 1What are professional references?People who can account for your work-related qualities.

References are people who can account for your work-related qualities not individuals who only know you personally and socially. Good examples of references are your instructors or other staff, past and present employers, Trade or industry contact, and individuals who supervised you while out on field training or clinicals. Vendors and customers are those associated with your past or present employment. 4 Reference ChecklistAsk permission first.Once permission is received, be sure to verify all contact information.
Supply the reference a copy of your resume.
Keep them posted on your activities.
Let them know that an employer may be calling.
Thank them!
Always ask permission before using someone as a reference. It is a common courtesy and standard practice. You also would not want the reference to be unprepared upon receiving a call from a potential employer. Once approved, be sure to verify all of the contact information. This includes the correct spelling of the name, job title, phone number, and email address. Let them know they may be receiving calls from potential employers. Be sure to Inform them of the company names.
You can also give your references a copy of your most current resume so they familiarize themselves with your work history, skills, and qualifications. Always keep them posted on any changes.
Lastly, be sure to thank them for being a reference.
