Providence and the Conspiracy of Accidents!
Some years ago, in a class in religious experience, a woman
shared this story:!
She had been raised in a religious home and had been a
regular church�goer un�l her university years when her
interest in religion progressively dropped so that by the �me
of her gradua�on she no longer a�ended church. Her
indifference to religion con�nued for several more years
a er her gradua�on. Her story focused on how that changed.!
One day, several years a er having given up going to church,
she went to spend some �me with a married sister who lived
near a major ski resort. She arrived on a Saturday evening
and the next morning, Sunday, her sister invited her to go to
church with her. She went skiing instead.!
On one of her runs down the hill that Sunday she hit a tree
and broke her leg. Spor�ng a huge cast, she was released
from hospital several days later. The next Sunday morning,
her sister again asked her to come to church with her. This
�me, with skiing not an op�on, she accepted the invita�on.
As luck would have it, the readings for the day were about
the Good Shepherd and as chance would have it, there was a
visi�ng�priest from Israel. The priest could not see her,
complete with cast, si(ng in the back pews and so there was
no explana�on, other than divine providence or pure, sinister
fluke, for how he began his homily:!
“There’s a prac�ce among shepherds in Israel, he said, that
existed at the �me of Jesus and is s�ll in use today that needs
to be understood in order to appreciate what Jesus says
about God as the Good Shepherd.!
La Providencia y la Conspiración de Accidentes!
Hace algunos años, en una clase de experiencia religiosa, una
mujer compar�ó esta historia:!
Ella había crecido en un hogar religioso y había asis�do
regularmente a la iglesia hasta sus años universitarios, cuando
su interés en la religión disminuyó muchísimo, y ya para su
graduación, ella ya no asis2a a la iglesia. Su indiferencia hacia
la religión con�nuó durante varios años después de su
graduación. Su historia se centró en cómo eso cambió.!
Un día, varios años después de haber dejado de ir a la iglesia,
ella fue a pasar un �empo con una hermana casada que vivía
cerca de un importante lugar de esquiar. Llegó un sábado por
la tarde y, a la mañana siguiente, el domingo, su hermana la
invitó a la iglesia con ella. Ella en cambio; se fue a esquiar.!
En una de sus corridas por la colina ese domingo chocó contra
un árbol y se quebró una pierna. Con un yeso enorme, fue
dada de alta del hospital varios días después. El próximo
domingo por la mañana, su hermana volvió a pedirle que
fuera a la iglesia con ella. Esta vez, como esquiar no era una
opción, ella aceptó la invitación. Por suerte, las lecturas del
día eran sobre el Buen Pastor y, por casualidad, había un
sacerdote visitante de Israel. El sacerdote no podía verla, con
yeso, sentada en los bancos de atrás y, por lo tanto, no había
ninguna explicación, aparte de la divina providencia o pura
casualidad, de cómo comenzó su homilía:!
"Hay una prác�ca entre los pastores en Israel, dijo, que exis�ó
en la época de Jesús y todavía está en uso hoy en día, que

Some�mes very early on in the life of a lamb, if a shepherd
senses that this par�cular lamb is going to be a congenital
stray and forever be dri ing away from the herd, he
deliberately breaks its leg so that he has to carry it un�l its leg
is healed. By that �me, the lamb becomes so a�ached to the
shepherd that it never strays again!”!
“I may be dense,” shared the woman, “but, given my broken
leg and all that chance coincidence, hearing those words woke
up something inside me. I have prayed and gone to church
regularly ever since!”!
“The language of God is the experience God writes inside our
lives,” says John of the Cross. James Mackey suggests that
divine providence is “a conspiracy of accidents” through which
God speaks. What this woman experienced that Sunday was
precisely the language of God, divine providence, God’s finger
in her life through a conspiracy of accidents.!
Today such a concept of divine providence is not very popular.
Our age tends to see this as too�connected to an unhealthy
fatalism (“It’s all in God’s hands, I needn’t take all the
necessary measures!”), an unhealthy fundamentalism (“God
sent AIDS into the world as a punishment for sexual
promiscuity!”), or an unhealthy theology of God (“God sends
us natural and personal disasters to bring us back to our
senses!”)!
It’s good that our age rejects these false no�ons of providence
because God does not start fires, floods, wars, AIDS, or
anything else to punish us. God doesn’t break anyone’s legs.
Nature, chance, freedom, and brute con�ngency do.
Some�mes, admi�edly, sin is involved, but that’s not the
point. God doesn’t send catastrophes to wake us up.!
But to say that God doesn’t ini�ate or cause these things is not
the same thing as saying that God doesn’t speak through
them. God speaks through chance events, accidents, both
good and bad. Past genera�ons more easily grasped this.!
My parents, for example, had a finely�tuned and theologically�
correct sense of divine province: They were farmers and, for
them, like Abraham and Sarah of old, there were no accidents,
only providence and the finger of God. If they had a good
harvest, God was blessing them. If they had a poor one, well,
they concluded that God wanted them to live on less for a
while and for a good reason. And they would always in the
end figure out that reason.!
Jesus called this “reading the signs of the �mes”. How do we
do this? We do it by becoming meteorologists of soul who
read the inner movements of the spirit in the outer weather of
history.!
In the conspiracy of accidents that make up the ordinary
events of our everyday lives, the finger of God is wri�ng and
wri�ng large. We are children of Israel, children of Jesus, and
children of our mothers and fathers in the faith. We need
therefore, like them, to look at each and every event in our
lives and ask ourselves the ques�on: “What is God saying to us
in this?” The language of God is the experience that God
writes inside our lives.!
Reading that language is an important form of prayer, one
that takes us beyond simply saying prayers to more healthily
living out the words: “Pray always”. Fr. Ron Rolheiser, OMI!

quebrada y toda esa casualidad, escuchar esas palabras
despertó algo dentro de mí. Desde entonces he orado y asis�do
a la iglesia regularmente.!
"El lenguaje de Dios es la experiencia que Dios escribe en
nuestras vidas", dice Juan de la Cruz. James Mackey sugiere que
la divina providencia es "una conspiración de accidentes" por la
cual Dios habla. Lo que esta mujer experimentó ese domingo
fue precisamente el lenguaje de Dios, la divina providencia, el
dedo de Dios en su vida a través de una conspiración de
accidentes.!
Hoy en día; ese concepto de la divina providencia no es muy
popular. Nuestro época �ende a ver esto muy de seguido como
un desanimo insalubre ("¡Todo está en las manos de Dios, no
necesito tomar todas las medidas necesarias!"), Un
fundamentalismo insalubre ("Dios envió el SIDA al mundo como
un cas�go por ¡promiscuidad sexual!"), o una teología no
saludable de Dios ("¡Dios nos envía desastres naturales y
personales para devolvernos a nuestros sen�dos!")!
Es bueno que nuestra época rechace estas nociones falsas de la
providencia porque Dios no inicia incendios, inundaciones,
guerras, SIDA ni cualquier otra cosa para cas�garnos. Dios no le
quiebra las piernas a nadie. Es la naturaleza, el azar y la
libertad. A veces, sin dudas, el pecado está involucrado, pero
ese no es el punto. Dios no envía catástrofes para despertarnos.!
Pero decir que Dios no inicia ni causa estas cosas no es lo
mismo que decir que Dios no habla a través de ellas. Dios habla
a través de eventos fortuitos, accidentes, tanto buenos como
malos. Las generaciones pasadas captaron esto más fácilmente.!
Mis padres, por ejemplo, tenían un sen�do de la divina
providencia finamente sintonizado y teológicamente correcto:
eran granjeros y, para ellos, como Abraham y Sara, no habían
accidentes, solo la providencia y el dedo de Dios. Si tenian una
buena cosecha, Dios los estaba bendiciendo. Si tenían una
mala, concluían que Dios quería que vivieran con menos por un
�empo y por una buena razón. Y siempre, al final, descubrirían
esa razón.!
Jesús lo llamó "leer los signos de los �empos". Cómo hacemos
esto? Lo hacemos convir�éndonos en meteorólogos del alma
que leen los movimientos internos del espíritu en el clima
exterior de la historia. !
En la conspiración de accidentes que conforman los eventos
ordinarios de nuestra vida diaria, el dedo de Dios está
escribiendo y escribiendo en grande. Somos hijos de Israel,
hijos de Jesús e hijos de nuestras madres y padres en la fe. Por
lo tanto, necesitamos, como ellos, mirar cada uno de los
eventos en nuestras vidas y hacernos la pregunta: "¿Qué nos
está diciendo Dios en esto?". El lenguaje de Dios es la
experiencia que Dios escribe en nuestras vidas.!
Leer ese lenguaje es una forma importante de oración, una que
nos lleva más allá de solo decir oraciones para vivir más

for potential Godparents and the date for the Baptism will be chosen. English Baptisms take place on the fourth weekend of

respond to hospital emergency call requests, receiving the
Sacrament before going to the hospital is preferable in the event that one of the friars is not immediately available in an
emergency. Your family and friends are welcome to join you for this special celebration so they can pray for you too.!!
