WHAT IS THE EXTERNAL GIS SERVICE?
QUU are responsible for changes to the water and sewer services of over 1.4 million
customers. QUU engages contractors to facilitate the continual creation and
maintenance of its assets and infrastructure.
The External GIS is in integrated web mapping application that enables users to
interact with the map and access current information about QUU assets.
Throughout this user guide, this icon indicates sample workflows
demonstrating key tasks that can be completed using the
External GIS.

The following diagram shows where the following key components of the External GIS
web Portal user interface (UI) are located. These terms are used throughout this
document to describe the different features and functions of the application:

MAIN FEATURES
The External GIS has a map area that may be navigated using the following methods
• To zoom, use the map navigation tools on the map +/-, the mouse and scroll
wheel, +/- buttons on the keyboard, double click to zoom in
• To zoom to a specific location hold Shift and click and drag a box on the
map to zoom in , Shift+Ctrl+click/drag a box on the map to zoom out
• To pan, use your mouse to click/drag or the arrow keys on your keyboard.
• Clicking features on the Map displays a pop up window with the feature
attribute data. Use the Next Feature arrow to scroll through features that are
overlaid.
The scale bar represents the scale of the map. Due to the map projection of the
External GIS, all area and linear measurements should be considered approximate.
The search bar enable users to search for an asset or location using an Asset ID,
Address or Street name.
The map function tools/widgets allow users to interact with the map, enabling users
to turn layers on and off, make measurements on the map, change the base map
and print a pdf map.

Splash Screen
When a user navigates to the External GIS, They are initially prompted to login

Once logged in, a splash screen displays containing the QUU liability and copyright
information. The user must agree to these terms prior to accessing the QUU External
GIS. This is done by checking the tick box next to ‘I accept the above terms and
conditions’.

Search
The search function enables a user to easily find assets or locations in the map by
typing in the search bar an Asset ID, Address, Road name, Lot and Plan, or Suburb
The most efficient way to search is to select the relevant search layer by clicking the
and selecting the layer you wish to search, then enter the search term.
The search functionality enables predictive serach and will auto-fill the results list with
potential matches
When a feature or address is selected, the map will zoom to the location of the
selection and a pop up will appear displaying information about the asset.

You may clear the search using the x in the search bar.
NOTE: The External GIS includes the Esri World Geocoding Service. This service
includes Nation wide data. Occasionally the search may return a result that is
outside of the QUU service area.
Sample Workflow
1. Type in an Asset ID, Address, RoadName, Lot and Plan or Suburbinto the
search bar and press enter.
2. Select an option from the results list.
3. Notice how the map zooms to the location of the selected feature
4. Take time to review the information about the feature in the pop – up.

Dynamic Legend
The External GIS represents geographic information as a collection of layers in a map
view. The Dynamic Legend to the left of the screen displays the layers and
symbology of the layers that are visible in the current map extent. As you zoom in
and out and pan around the map, the layers and symbols in this window will
change.
You may hide this legend using the arrow at the centre right of the
dynamic legend window
Sample Work Flow
1. Use the map navigation tools to zoom in and out of the map and note the
change in the layers and symbology visible in the dynamic legend.

Layer List
The Layer List displays all of the Layers in the map along with the symbology of each
layer. This interactive list gives the user control over what information is visible on the
map.
The contents are grouped by Service type eg, Sewer_Assets_Active_Infrastructure.
Within the service group are sub groups such as Sewer Fittings and Pipe Structures,
then individual Layers.
Entire Services, groups or layers may be toggled on and off using the tick boxes next
to the layer.
At Service level you may click on the to access options to Zoom to the extent of
the service, change the transparancy of the service, or move the service up or down
the visible heirachy in the map.

Sample Work Flow
1. Open the Layer list by selecting on the Map Tools.
2. Explore the Service level layers, Groups within the service, and individual
Layers using to expand the layer list
3. Toggle Services, Groups within the services and individual layers on and off by
checking and unchecking the tick boxes next to the layer names.
4. Select the next to a Service and select ‘Zoom’ to zoom to the extent of the
layer
5. Using your search and map navigation skills zoom to an area of interest then
select next to a service in the layer list and change the transparency to
the layer
6. Select the next to a Service and move the service up and down in the
layer list. Note that this operation changes the drawing order of the layer in
the map.

Attribute Table
The Attribute Table widget displays a tabular view of the QUU layer attributes. It
displays at the bottom of the map and can be opened, resized, or closed. When
more than one layer's attributes display, multiple tabs automatically generate in the
attribute panel allowing you to switch among the attribute tables.

Sample Workflow
1. Open the attribute table by clicking on the at the bottom of the
map.
2. By default all of the tables that have been configured to be available will be
displayed. To select a specific table to navigate to, click the to select
from a list of all available tables.

3. Explore the Attribute Table Tools
a. Filter by Map Extent: By default is selected and displays attributes for features
within the current viewable map extent. You may view an overview of the
current map extent by clicking on the
You can move the extent by clicking on the highlighted extent in the overview
and dragging it around the map.
If you turn this feature off, all attributes for each enabled layer will be returned (to a
maximum of 1000).

b. Select a record: Clicking on a record in the table selects it and highlights the
corresponding feature in the map. Hold the SHIFT or CTRL key to select
multiple records.
Note: Number of selected records—Shown on the lower left of the table.
c. Zoom to selected features: ‘Clicking Zoom to’ resets the map extent to centre
around all selected features.
d. Clear selection: Clicking the Clear Selection button clears all selections.
e. Refresh: Clicking Refresh refreshes the tables.

4. Sort a field: Clicking a field heading sorts the records by this field.
5. Show or hide column: Clicking the + icon on the right side of the Attribute
Table panel opens the field visibility window. Check or uncheck the fields to set
them to visible or invisible in the table.

6. Explore Attribute Table Options
Attribute Table options give the user control over what information is displayed
in the attribute tables. Options also facilitate the capability to export
information to csv.

a. Show Selected Records: Only displays records that have been
selected.
b. Show Related Records: Displays related records if a selected record
has related table. (NOTE: this option is not applicable to QUU at this
stage and is not selectable).
c. Filter: Allows you to filter records in the table based on criteria you
define.

d. Show or Hide Columns: Equivalent to clicking the + icon on the right
side of the panel to set visibility for individual fields.
e. Export to CSV: Exports the attributes to a CSV file. If records are
selected, only the selected records are exported. If no records are
selected, all the records in the table are exported.
NOTE: For a feature layer, the maximum records exported to CSV is 1000.

Measurement Tool
The measure tool enable users to obtain area and liner measurements as well as
point coordinate information.
Note: Distance and area measurements should be considered approximate.
Sample Work Flow
1. Open the Measure Widget by selecting on the map tools.
2. To measure an area Click the polygon measurement icon
Draw a polygon on the map by clicking three or more points. Double-click to
finish drawing the polygon. The Measurement widget displays the total area of
the polygon, using the defined Default Area Unit. To change the area unit,
select the applicable unit of measure from the Sq Meters drop-down menu.

3. To measure a line, Click the polyline measurement icon
Draw a polyline on the map by clicking two or more points. Double-click to
finish drawing the polyline. The Measurement widget displays the total length
of the polyline, using the defined Default Length Unit. To change the length
unit, select the applicable unit of measure from the Meters drop-down menu.
4. Click the point measurement icon
5. Click a point on the map. The Measurement widget displays the coordinates
for the point in Degrees (decimal). You may change the coordinate display
format to degrees/minutes/seconds by changing the Degrees drop-down
to DMS.

Change Basemap
Basemaps give context to the geographic representation of the QUU Network. The
Basemap Widget allows the user to change the base information of the map
between the street view and an aerial image.
Sample Workflow
1. Open the Basemap Widget by clicking on the icon in the map tools.
2. Select the World Imagery thumbnail to change the basemap

Print Tool
The Print widget allows a user to print the map that is currently visible in the screen to
a PDF template. There a 4 templates to select from.
A user may also customise information about the map by selecting the Advanced
Settings.

Sample Workflow
1. Open the Print widget by selecting from the Map tools.
2. Select a Layout template
3. Select the Advance options and type 1500 in the Force Scale option
4. Select Print
5. Click on the resulting PDF in the window to view the PDF created.

Table of
Contents
A tabbed list of data frames and layers (or tables) on a map
that shows how the data is symbolized, the source of the data,
and whether or not each layer is selectable.
Layer A layer that references a set of feature data. Feature data
represents geographic entities as points, lines, and polygons
(areas).
Group Layer A group of several layers that appear and act as a single layer
making it easier to organize a map Layers.
Attribute Tabular or textual data describing the geographic
characteristics of features. For example Name, Asset ID,
Measured Length.
Symbology The set of conventions, rules, or encoding systems that define
how geographic features are represented with symbols on a
map.
Feature A representation of a real-world object on a map.
widget An interactive graphic component of a user interface (such as
a button, scroll bar, or menu bar), its controlling program, or the
