The Iron Outlaw
Away the horses galloped to the house I had earlier stolen 5 of the
best horses in town from and am now taking them back to the gang
at the house. The next morning the bush police were in town and
looking for us so we rode our horses to the look out and hid there
for a while. When the police got to the house mother was accused
of assaulting an officer but it was only me, Steve, Dan and Joseph.
At the lookout things weren’t so good either. The cave was full of
mice, rats spiders and snakes! We went down to the local farmer
about some supplies but he freaked and went for the police. I told
the gang to gather as much food and other things that we needed.
Then we saw a wanted poster in the mail. It was us! They wanted
us! Dan giggled as it was a pretty good picture of us. I think Dan
was under a lot of pressure that’s why he made jokes, trying to
cheer us up. But it didn’t work, the gang was having a panic attack!
All we could think of was what if they wanted to hang us or shoot
us or maybe poison our drinks and laugh at every awful thing that
came into their heads? We were wanted for killing an officer. It was
pretty hard not to kill one when he was pointing a gun at you! A
£2000 reward was offered for us dead or alive. We headed to a
pub in Glenrowan. We talked about a plan to get rid of the bush
police and how we wanted to grow old and have some grand kids
like the others. But it did not end like that, oh no it was just the
gang against the bush police! The local folk told us that they would
be here in a week or so. We started to make some armour. What
a wonderful sight, the glowing hot iron moulded to perfection. Later
that day after the iron cooled we put on the armour so we were
ready if they did a surprise attack. Well they did, they came under
the cover of night and told us to get out of the pub. The locals left
the pub but we stayed in the pub. Just then one walked in, Dan
shot him then they said to us that they were going to burn down the
pub. They set the pub on fire but Joseph and Steve stayed in the
pub. Dan and I left the pub. “Drop your weapons,” they yelled! “Are
you kidding me!” I yelled back. So the police started to shoot at us
and we shot back. This went on for a while but when I stepped out
to shoot they shot me in the legs, the dirty cheats! Dan had shot
himself because of the pressure. Joseph and Steve composed
themselves, walked on over in a poised manner and begged me
not to die or they would kill me! They stitched me up and I went to
court. I was sentenced to death. The pub was no longer a pub as it
was only ashes now. So before I got hanged all I had to say was “such is life.”
