Timeline: Taj Hotels• 1902: Incorporation of Indian Hotels Company Ltd. (IHCL) by Jamshedji Tata

• 1903: The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai - First Hotel established

• 1974: First five star beach resort, Fort Aguada Beach Resort, Goa

• 1980: First international step. Taj Sheba Hotel at Yemen

• 1989: Taj Bengal in Kolkata. First chain to have presence in all five metros.

• 2000: Partnership with GVK Reddy group to form Taj GVK Hotels

• 2004: Opened Wellington Mews in Mumbai, first luxury serviced apartment and

launched Ginger, its value for money chain

• 2008: Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, was under terrorist siege on 26 November, 2008

• 2010: Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai reopened completely

• 2011: Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces opens a new hotel - Vivanta by Taj – Dal view, Srinagar.

Global Awards August 2013• The Taj Group of Hotels was conferred the Conde Nast

Traveler USA World Savers Award 2013 for Poverty Relief. • Banjaar Tola, the Taj Safari lodge in Kanha National Park

was conferred the award for Most Innovative Guest Experience at the Virtuoso Best of Best Awards 2013.

July 2013• Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur ranked no. 11 on the list of

"Top Resorts in Asia" and no. 14 on the list of "Top 50 Hotels in the World" in the Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards 2013.

National (Indian) Awards (April 2013)

• Taj Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad was named the Best Heritage Hotel in India at the T+L India's Best Awards 2013.

Future Plans of Taj Hotels

• it plans to open 83 new hotels globally to take tally to 200 by the end of 2018. (end of 5 years)

• The big plans include ‘Project Island’, to develop the Landsend property at Bandra, Mumbai, into an iconic 1,000-room hotel with 12 restaurants and two ballrooms seating 2,000 each.

• The Taj group of hotels, at present involved in four projects in China, may become the first Indian hotel company to establish its presence in Tibet.
