Alexander Graham SchoolThree Alexander Graham orchestra students and two Graham alumni students per
formed with Lindsey Stirling at the Chicago Theatre December 6th. This was part ofher Warmer in the Winter Holiday Tour. At every performance across the country,Stirling invites local student musicians to perform 4 pieces of music with her. Thisopportunity was offered to Graham by VH1 Save the Music Foundation.
The students were under the direction of Tina Parker, the music teacher at Grahamsince 2008. The students prepared for the concert in 3 weeks, rehearsing after schooluntil 4:45 each day and practicing hours on their own.
Lindsey Stirling is a famous violinist who dances while playing and performs classical, pop, dance, electronic and folk music. She has over 10 million subscribers onher YouTube channel and has released 4 albums. She recently earned 2nd place onDancing with the Stars.
Graham School students with Lindsey Stirling. The students met Lindsey Stirling before the concert. When asked if they had any
questions, Graham alumnus, Elizabeth Cervantes, asked why she began to play popmusic instead of continue with her classical playing. Stirling said playing pop musicwhile dancing at a talent competition made her stand out among the many classicalviolinists.
Graham teachers, administration and students were very supportive. They madean announcement at school and everyone wished them good luck. 8th grade teacher,Ms. McEligott, was so excited for the students that she arranged to have a limousinepick them up from school to drive them to the concert.Their parents and teacherswere also very proud of them.
Even though the students were nervous they performed all four pieces amazinglywell. They had practiced so much that some students were able to look away fromthe music from time to time and watch her while they were playing.
After the performance, while standing outside the theatre, many of the audiencemembers congratulated the students on their performance. One mother with heryoung child came up to 8th grader, Michelle Del Rio and said, “My daughter wantsto play the violin just like you when she grows up.” Michelle gave her daughter ahug.
8th grader, Adriana Varela wondered if Stirling was so impressed with their playing that she would ask them to come with her on the road.
8th grader, Elizabeth Titsworth can’t stop playing the pieces, even now that theperformance is over.

Free Days Return to Field Museum in 2018 for Illinois Residents
The Field Museum’s Free Days are back in 2018! This includes an entire month of free basic admission for Illinois residents during Free February, plus additional specific free days in January and June. Free Days are aboutan $80 savings for a family of four, making them the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the many adventures at the Museum. Free Days this year fall during a time of big (and by big, we mean colossal) change coming to the Museum, including the introduction of the largest dinosaur ever found, the Titanosaur.
Free February and January Free Days line up with SUE’s updates as part of the transformation of Stanley FieldHall in 2018. SUE will soon be on vacation in order to receive scientific improvements and undergo conservation work, so Free Days during the winter of 2018 are great opportunities to get a lastminute selfie or groupphoto with SUE in Stanley Field Hall before the skeletal celebrity goes on hiatus, returning in 2019 to a newhome in the Field’s permanent exhibition Evolving Planet. Free Days are running January 3, 4, 15, 27, 28; February 128; and June 20, 21, 22; from 9am to 5pm. The Field Museum is located at 1400 S. Lake Shore Drive.
Illinois residents must show valid proof of residency. Visit The Field Museum website for details. With proofof residency, Illinois residents can enjoy free Basic Admission on all above specified Free Days in January, February, and June. Visitors that wish to upgrade to an AllAccess Pass which includes access to Specimens: Unlocking the Secrets of Life, Ancient Mediterranean Cultures in Contact, Mummies: Images of the Afterlife, CyrusTang Hall of China, and a 3D movie can do so at an additional cost. Tickets to Jurassic World: The Exhibitionwill also be available at an additional cost.
Alderman’s CornerHappy New Year! I hope
everyone was able to relax andenjoy the Holidays with theirloved ones. The Holidays are agreat time to look back and bethankful.
I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the residents ofthe 11th Ward. I am alsothankful for the great team wehave at the Ward Office.
2017 was a very significantyear for the communities of the 11th Ward. A lot of residential, commercial and infrastructural developmentwas initiated or completed. Major infrastructure improvements and investments in education were madewhile several new businesses opened. I look forwardto the new construction projects along Halsted Streetand throughout the entire 11th Ward in 2018.
As I have stated in the past, public safety will alwaysremain my top priority. It is an honor to serve such active community members that are supportive of the police. I continue to work with our Commanders of the1st, 9th, and 12th Districts to ensure our communitiesare safe. Our Neighborhood Watch groups continue toplay an integral role in public safety. If you recall at“The Keeping It Real Seminar” the convicted burglarssaid the biggest deterrent was “nosey neighbors”. StayNosey in 2018!
After reviewing crime statistics last week with theCPD administration, crime is statistically down in ourWard, but I know there is still a perception of it notbeing safe. I will continue to work closely with theCPD to ensure the perception matches the statistics. Iwould like to commend the CPD for their great policework especially around the Holidays.
I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year. Iwill continue to work hard and build on the improvements that we have made. Whether it is attending acommunity meeting or calling City service requestsinto my office, I appreciate hearing from you. As thesign in the Ward Office reads “Service to the public isour program. We appreciate your suggestions and criticisms.” Please stop by our office at 3659 S. Halsted orcall us at 7732546677.

Snow Blower TipsWinter is on its way – and clearing driveways, sidewalks and parking lots is no
small job. It’s important to get ready before flurries and heavier snows arrive. TheOutdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) is offering tips for safe and correct useof snow throwers, often referred to as snow blowers.
“Weather today is more unpredictable than ever, and you need to have your snowthrower serviced and ready to power up,” says OPEI President and CEO Kris Kiser.“You want to have the right fuel on hand and review your owner’s manual now soyou can use your equipment safely.”
Kiser says preparation is key and that home and business owners should consider the following tips:
Prepare Before It SnowsReview your owner’s manual. Check your owner’s manual for safe handling pro
cedures. If you lost your manual, you can look it up online (and store a copy on yourcomputer so you have the manual available to reference in the future). Review howto operate the controls. You should be able to shut off your equipment quickly.
Check your equipment. The snow thrower should be completely powered offwhen you are checking it over. If you forgot to drain the fuel last winter before storing your snow thrower, drain the gas tank now. Adjust any cables. Check the auger.
Put your equipment where you can get to it easily. Move your equipment to aconvenient and accessible location, so you can get to it easily when you need it.
Purchase your fuel. Often gas stations are closed after a storm. Be sure to use thecorrect fuel, as recommended by your equipment's manufacturer (for more information on fueling properly see www.LookBeforeYouPump.com). Fill up the fueltank outside before you start the engine and while the engine is cold. Never add fuelto a running or hot engine.
Store your fuel properly. Place fuel in a fuel container and label it with the datepurchased and the ethanol content of the fuel. Fuel that is more than 30 days old canphase separate and cause operating problems. It’s important to use fresh fuel in yoursnow blower. Make sure fuel is stored safely and out of the reach of children.
Tidy the area you intend to clear with your equipment. Snow can sometimes hideobjects. Doormats, hoses, balls, toys, boards, wires, and other debris should beremoved from the areas you intend to clear. When run over by a snow blower, theseobjects may harm the machine or people.
Plan to dress for winter weather. Locate your safety gear now, and place it in anaccessible closet or location in your home. Plan to wear safety glasses, gloves andfootwear that can handle cold and slippery surfaces.
Operate Your Equipment SafelyKEY SAFETY TIP: Never put your hands inside the auger or chute. Use a clean
out tool (or stick) to unclog snow or debris from your snow thrower. Your handsshould never go inside the auger or chute.
Turn OFF your snow blower if you need to clear a clog. If you need to removedebris or unclog snow, always turn off your snow thrower. Wait for all moving partsto come to a complete stop before clearing any clogs or debris.
Only use your snow thrower in visible conditions. Never operate the snow thrower without good visibility or light.
Aim your snow blower with care. Never throw snow toward people or cars. Donot allow anyone to stand in front of your snow thrower. Keep children or petsaway from your snow thrower when it is operating.

Cold Weather Safety Tips for Your PetsExposure to winter’s dry, cold air and chilly rain, sleet and snow can cause
chapped paws and itchy, flaking skin, but these aren’t the only discomforts pets cansuffer. Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from icemelting agents are licked off of bare paws. To help prevent cold weather dangers fromaffecting your pet’s health, please heed the following advice from our experts:
Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as hecomes inside, paying special attention to his feet and inbetween the toes. Removeany snow balls from between his foot pads.
Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will providemore warmth. If your dog is longhaired, simply trim him to minimize the clingingice balls, salt crystals and deicing chemicals that can dry his skin, and don’t neglect the hair between his toes. If your dog is shorthaired, consider getting him acoat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of thetail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.
Bring a towel on long walks to clean off stinging, irritated paws. After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals andcheck for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes.
Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells. Washing too often canremove essential oils and increase the chance of developing dry, flaky skin. If yourpooch must be bathed, ask your vet to recommend a moisturizing shampoo and/orrinse.
Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before goingoutside can help protect from salt and chemical agents. Booties provide even morecoverage and can also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toesand causing irritation. Use petfriendly ice melts whenever possible.
Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughlyclean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that containpropylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
Pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in wintertime. Feeding your pet alittle bit more during the cold weather months can provide muchneeded calories, and making sure she has plenty of water to drink will help keep her wellhydratedand her skin less dry.
Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor andaway from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.
Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keepyour animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed. In addition, don’t leave pets alone in a car during coldweather, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals tofreeze to death.
White Expands Organ Tissue Donor Registry
Secretary of State Jesse White's legislation allowing16 and 17yearolds to register for the state’s FirstPerson Consent Organ Tissue Donor Registry whenthey receive their driver's license or identification cardwill take effect on Jan. 1, 2018.
“Our main priority is to save lives,” said White.“Thousands of Illinoisans are waiting for an organ. Those who are waiting are someone's mother, father, daughter or son. This new law is an important step inreducing the number of individuals on the waitinglist.”
Under current law, an individual must be at least 18years old to join the First Person Consent Organ TissueDonor Registry. The legislation amends the IllinoisAnatomical Gift Act allowing 16 and 17 year olds tojoin the registry. Those who join the registry willreceive a letter of thanks from the Secretary of State’soffice and Secretary White encourages 16 and 17 yearolds to use this letter as a basis for discussing theirchoice with their parents.
By joining the First Person Consent Organ TissueDonor Registry, 16 and l7 year olds will be giving consent to donate their organs and tissue at the time oftheir death with only the single limitation that the procurement organizations (Gift of Hope Organ & TissueNetwork and Mid America Transplant) must make areasonable effort to contact a parent or guardian toensure they approve of the donation. The parent orguardian will then have the opportunity to overturn thechild’s decision. Once the 16 or 17 year old turns 18,that decision would be considered legally bindingwithout limitation.
There are 47 states that have enacted this legislation. In 2016, more than 350,000 16 and 17 year olds inIllinois were issued driver's licenses and identificationcards.
“Approximately 4,700 people are on the waiting listin Illinois and about 300 hundred people die each yearwaiting for an organ transplant,” said White. “One person can improve the quality of life for up to 25 people.Currently, 6.3 million Illinoisans are registered withthe state's registry.”
Illinoisans can register with the Secretary of State'sOrgan/Tissue Donor Registry at LifeGoesOn.com, bycalling 18002102106, or by visiting their localDriver Services facility.
